- This is our Group Reaction & Review to UP (2009). In this movie, elderly widower Carl Fredricksen (Asner) and Wilderness Explorer Russell (Nagai), who go on a journey to South America in order to fulfill a promise that Carl made to his late wife Ellie. Along the way, they meet a talking dog named Dug (Peterson), and encounter a giant bird named Kevin, who is being hunted by the explorer Charles Muntz (Plummer).

I believe Russel's parents are divorced. He mentions his mom earlier in the movie with the 'quiet game' bit, so we know she's in his life. His dad isn't around often and "Phyllis says I bug him too much," whenever he calls, and that Phyllis isn't his mom; so they're either his father's gf/new partner or a receptionist or something along those lines.
Russell implies that his dad used to play a more active part in his life before something changed. That could easily have been the divorce itself, but it's also possible (and my personal headcanon) that he got a new gf or wife who feels "uncomfortable" with him having a kid from a past marriage and influences/manipulates him into not spending (much) time with Russell.

I could see how you were irritated with Russel and the bird because we were all on Carl's side with his single-minded pursuit of getting to Paradise Falls, and those things were getting in Carl's way. That is the way the movie was designed - to make you care more about Carl's promise to Ellie than anything else. This makes it all the more surprising when we find out that Carl was chasing the wrong goal. The house - the pictures - the chairs - the money - being in Paradise Falls - that all didn't matter. The only thing that really mattered was Carl going on with his life as a new adventure. That is why the emotional climax of the movie was when Carl, after achieving his goal of getting his house to Paradise Falls, and still feeling empty, starts to look wistfully at Ellie's Adventure Book, and discovers the extra pages she added after "Stuff I'm Going to Do." By the way, I think she added those pages when she was sick in the hospital. If you go back and look at that hospital scene you will see a tape dispenser and scissors on her hospital night stand - things she might have used to add those pictures at the end. This change of goal is similar to other Pixar movies. In "Soul", Joe Gardner achieves his goal of playing piano with Dorthea Williams, only to discover the same sense of emptiness when he thought he would feel elated. In "Inside Out", Joy spends the whole movie trying to prevent Sadness from taking control of Riley, only to find out that Sadness was essential. In "Onward", Ian spends the whole movie trying to meet his dead dad with magic, but when he finally gets his chance to meet his dad, he realizes that his brother Barley is the one who really needed to see him and Ian gives up his chance to Barley. But I think this move, "Up", does it the best.
Carl was trying to take their home to Paradise Falls, so he could sit there with no food, power, communication, until the end. He had no plan beyond that point. He was giving up. It’s wild that this movie is designed to make you feel annoyed, like Carl, but ultimately what you are hoping for is to get Carl to the end… instead of looking for a new adventure with the unusual family forming around him. It’s an incredible tactic by the creators, once you realise the right plan was never to hope for Carl to succeed. Russell, Kevin, and Dug were all symbols of love that he needed to let into his heart again.
He really planned to die in the chair😢
In my opinion, it's about letting go. He was obsessed with the idea of fulfilling Ellie's goal/adventure book, but what he understood in the end is that, "it's not about destination but the adventure itself" and also that he had to move on and let go of Ellie.
We see that Ellie had written a small message on that book, for him to have a new adventure and move forward when she's gone.
Ellie would never want Carl to choose the house over Kevin, or Russell, or Dug, or a new adventure. It’s hard to let go… but Ellie knew it would be, and left him a reminder. 😢😢😢😢😢
The beginning with Ellie absolutely kills me everytime. She was his happiness.

There is so much of Carl AND Ellie in Russell 🥲 But Carl is too blinded by grief to see the shy and lonely kid, or the kind and open adventurer, in that little boy.
Just a fun fact: "Paradise Falls" actually exist. It's the Angel's Falls or El Salto Ángel located in Venezuela. An as a venezuelan it made me so happy to see that represented there.

Easily one of Pixar's greatest masterpieces, and an inspiration to Old men and Women everywhere, or at least that's what my Grandpa thinks of this movie whenever we watch it together

I love Up because it tells one of the best love stories in its first five minutes, and all without a single word being said. Now that is the pinnacle of storytelling.
GUYS! Muntz was so obsessed with completing his mission that he wasted his life away, trapped in the middle of nowhere with no companionship and losing his mind! Don’t you see? Carl was making the same mistake, but having people and animals who truly loved him is what saved him!
Honestly, guys, it isn't Russell's or Kevin's fault for getting Carl dragged into such a mess. In fact, they all just got dragged into it. It was whole Charles' fault.
I'm sure you all know that but I just want you all to realize that in the first place Kevin wanted to live peacefully with her little ones like any other wild animals.
However, Charles wanted that bird to clear his name even though it's been like decades - not much people would even remember him. With also how much the society has changed, I don't think they're gonna like the fact he captured a poor momma bird for fame.
As for Russell, he doesn't even realize how deep his loneliness is. He's a child who's growing up in a home where no one could spend any time with him and teach him him some stuff.
It IS okay for y'all to be annoyed at Russell for "creating more problems" for Carl (I get annoyed too, to be honest). But in the end of the day, he's just a really compassionate boy who wanted to help Kevin get back to his family. I even think he subconsciously understand Kevin's desperation to just be with her family and live happily because ... deep down that's what he wants too.
Anyway.... Charles is going to such lengths for nothing, which is kinda messed up on his side because imagine searching for one thing your whole life only for it to end up the way you didn't imagine it to.
So, even the end he got is a mercy. I mean, it's better than finding out your whole life is waste of time, right? Well, he got what was coming to him either way. He couldn't let down his pride, he was too greedy, and not to mention he abused the poor dogs.
I would understand that it was just his passion if he only went on for like a few years. So, what he did was too much. I mean, at that point, how can he be sure it still even exist to be able to prove himself? He was too obsessed.

I agree with you guys the kid was annoying at times. Like this man didn't ask for any of this, he just wanted to fulfill him and his wife's dream. At the end of the day it ended how it should have and I like that the kid now has a father figure in his life.
I think it should be remembered Carol's family was filled with serious people so he had a goal and was focused on. Meanwhile Ellie's family was full of spanking people ( one even shot a gun in church lol ) so Carol at the moment he git to paradise falls must have realized that Russell is like Ellie. I think Ellie would've also chosen to help Kevin if she was there. Because it's all about the adventure.
Carl had paradise falls as his goal and promise he needed to keep to Ellie, both the young Ellie he grew up with and the old one he lost.
The issue is that Ellie wouldn't have chose the house and paradise falls, she would have met Russel, Doug, and Kevin and felt the motherly instinct to nurture and protect them.
He was so obsessed with a promise he couldn't finish that he forgot who Ellie was as a woman. Which is why he realized that he was misguided, and let go of the house to take care of his new family. It's why the house ended up back at paradise falls because Ellie was finally at rest.
The dog you asked about is a Dobermann Pinscher. They were bred by a tax collector to bring with him on the job as a protection dog. My grandfather had a red one named Bear. Sweetest dog, a really great breed.
Also, it's more than Munce is crazy, He's went insane with paranoia and a lust for redemption as an 'Explorer.' He thinks Carl is lying and there to hunt the bird before He can. He's murdered (at least) two people to keep that chance at fame all to himself.
You guys should check out Ratatouille, The Prince of Egypt, Coraline, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, and the last of both Kung Fu Panda and How to Train your Dragon and Monster House, The Incredibles, & Monsters Inc.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone hate Russell (this is not criticism, I just think it's interesting). I always felt like he had better priorities than Carl, he wants to save something that has a life and soul, whereas Carl wants to save material possessions.

This reaction was pretty much what I'd expected, but I'm surprised we didn't get more puns from Rafael. LOL A very heartwarming tall-tale of a movie. Obviously not to be taken too seriously. It even includes a snipe, which is a joke creature (like jackalopes) used to keep kids occupied and out of your hair. (There are also darker versions of the snipe, but you'd have to wiki that.)
When you guys compared Russell riding the leafblower to Harry Potter it reminded me that Rafael was watching that series. Are you guys still watching those, or am I tripping?

first time i watched this i cried through the entire thing. My grampy raised me so It was very emotional for me. I only watched it all the way through once for that reason.

The part at 15:34 were Mr. fregreson didn't let Russell in the house when he ask to come in was mest up until he decides to let him in afterwards.

i find most children very annoying in real life but i like the Russel character here. Firstly, because, though talkative and a bit pushy, he's much more well-behaved than the kids I've met in real life. Secondly, his gags and quips are quite funny. But mainly because without him, I'll only be watching an elderly man fly his house, sit on his couch while waiting for his house to reach the top of the falls, find his wife's message, and get stuck there in isolation without anyone to have new life adventures with, which would've been against his wife's true wish.

i believe it is his mum. about "phyllis": i don't think she's even his stepmum. he says that she "isn't his mum", and i always thought that it meant that she was his dad's girlfriend. and from his comment that she (phyllis) told him that he buggs his dad too much, they most likely don't have a good relationship. so it would be weird that she would come to his ceremony
His parents are divorced/separated. But I don't know if it was ever explained who was Phyllis? I always thought it was Russel's guardian since his dad is away a lot. Or maybe she was his dad's girlfriend? I'm not entirely sure on that.

How to aim an air balloon? For a hot air balloon, how often, and how much flame you use controls the altitude. To make it go the way you want, you rise and fall until you find a breeze going the way you want it to. For a Helium or Hydrogen balloon (like the Goodyear blimp, or like the Hindenburg,) you would need controls. They add a motor to push in the direction and they have airplane-like controls to move it around too.

Russell 8s a bit like Carl's and Ellie's kid. He is as enthusiastic and annoying s Ellie when they were young and a bit reserved like Carl. That's why his head is round and square.

Además tener en cuenta que el niño, ps es un niño, es por eso que es normal que solo se preocupe por el pajaro... Pero bueno, tmr, yo estaba esperando a que lloren, me dejaron llorar solo :v aunque bueno tengo que admitir que siempre lloro cuando veo esto, apesar qué soy hombre como ustedes, se que no tiene nada de malo, pero, hay que ser sinceros, los hombres, lloramos a solas sin que nadie nos vea.
