  • The Kham Magars livelihoods were mainly organised around transhumant pastoralism, a socio-economic practice that has seen a rapid decline in recent years. Kham shepherds used the communal highland pastures in the summer and migrated south towards the Mahabharat range in the winter to find grazeable land. Khams are well known for woollen weavings; their blankets have traditionally been sold on bazaars in the Terai and in Kathmandu. Other items like woollen belts, sweaters and coats were produced and distributed locally. Sheep were also used to carry salt and other products bought in bazaar towns, thus generating some income for the local shepherd-traders. Alongside herding, Khams make use of other subsistence techniques, such as horticulture and foraging.
