The Rhythm of Rural Life | Harvesting Barley in the Himalayas | Nepal Documentary

In rural Nepal the social life is still largely determined by agriculture and the seasonal harvesting cycle. For many of the indigenous people social and ecological systems are not separate entities. This interconnectedness of the people in the mountainous regions of Nepal to the natural environment around them is not simply a matter of weather changes, variations in physical environment, and changes in pastoral life; it corresponds to the transformations in human life. In this way the rhythm of rural life in the Himalayas follows seasons in both social and ecological life.
The film shows the harvesting of barley in a Kham village in Mid-Western Nepal. For the Khams the seasonal harvest of barley in spring marks an important shift to the higher mountainous pastures.
