    Wie schade, dass ich dieses Video nicht vor 8 Jahren entdeckt hatte. Damals tanzten wir noch Turniere in der A-Klasse, Sen.II /III.
    Es hätte uns damals sehr viel geholfen.
    Jetzt kann ich es meinen Hobby-Tänzern weiter geben.

    In the 3rd step of the Open Telemark, is the leader's head still strongly to the left, or should the head face diagonally to the wall like the follower's?

    • @EgilsSmagris
      @EgilsSmagris  7 років тому

      Charles, thanks for question. I think head position in PP depends on personal style and preference, also one have to consider personal flexibility. Hope it helps ;)

    Thank you so much. We are retirement age and we try to dance as often as possible. I watch your videos and try to pass it on to my partner; however, ... We are able to do the reverse turn, but when it comes to the natural turn, our footwork get lost. Any suggestion to a couple of oldies?

      Thanks for appreciatin my dance videos. About Natural Turn I suggest to learn it gradually:
      1) first do Box without turn (Man starts with Right Foot forward, Lady with Left Foot backward),
      2) then Natural Box where turn is 90 degrees in three steps,
      3) then Natural Turn

    Though I have danced Modern Dance for fifteen more years and have well read the Guy Howard's Technique of Ballroom Dancing.May I ask a question.
    In Waltz for example, most of the rise and fall are done by 1 single(supporting)leg or by 2 legs ? I believe in single leg rise/fall but some well dancers prefer the latter.

    • @EgilsSmagris
      @EgilsSmagris  9 років тому +1

      陳文賢 Thanks for question, in my opinion in Waltz we typically start to rise (as Guy Howard described) at end of step 1, then continue on step 2, continue to rise on 3, lower at end of step 3. It means that we use two supporting legs for rise. I think otherwise is very difficult to show gradual rise in Waltz type swing.

    We are teaching a competition for 20 couples for St Francis Hospice, Berhamsted, over the next few weeks it raises money for this great charity and if they produce a video I shall try to share it. If not look up 'Strictly Learn Dancing' on UA-cam Egils then you may see what we do. This year's competition is Charleston and Paso Doble.

    Thanks for quick reply.But What I mean is that when man do the figure of "outside change" for example, At step 2 man should use one leg(right leg) or two legs to rise.
    One of another example is like the "hover to pp step 2" after "throwaway oversway",
    or "travelling contra check" Man at step2. Thanks

    • @EgilsSmagris
      @EgilsSmagris  9 років тому +1

      陳文賢
      Short answer would be - I think we use two legs to rise in step 2.
      In Outside Change as G. Howard described there should be beginning of rise at end of step 1, continue on step 2, up on 3 and lower at end of 3.
      In each step we use both legs to support our weight. Step 1 - we use R leg to push and probably in fact still lower and L leg to absorb body weight (can look like still lowering) and then slightly to start rising. Step 2 - we continue to rise on L leg and then continue to rise on R leg. Step 3 - up on R leg and lower on L leg.
      In Travelling Contra Check in step 1 - we should go down on both knees, but then rise at end of step on L leg. Step 2 - we use both legs to be up. In practice, I think, there is some body rise on 2 and 3 - which mens we still use both legs to support rise.
      I know its difficult to describe all the details. But if we aim for musicality on our bodies, then legs should support whatever we do. Hope my opinion can help you! Egils

    Can you just speed up the same waltz steps for a Viennese Waltz or are they two very different dances with different steps and moves?

    • @EgilsSmagris
      @EgilsSmagris  7 років тому

      Hi Boris, yes you can speed up steps, but by doing this you actually change inner mehanic of movement. Therefore even similar figures are different. So Viennese Waltz is different dance although with some similarities to Slow Waltz. Hope it helps!

    Hi Egils) Could you explain to me the difference between the figure Back Whisk and Fallaway Whisk&))

    • @EgilsSmagris
      @EgilsSmagris  8 років тому

      Владимир, these figures obviousely are very similar. Difference is that Back Whisk Man can dance without turn (he may also turn to right). Fallaway Whisk Man always should turn to right. Fallaway Whisk can be danced also from promenade position (not basic figure). Hope it helps :)

    OK, nice routines. However, are these routines led and followed or are they danced as choreographed routines? If led, how?

    • @EgilsSmagris
      @EgilsSmagris  6 років тому

      Thanks for you interest and appreciation! These Routines can be led by Man's body weight and amount of rotation. If you have some particular question feel free to ask. Egils

    • @maidtoiron
      @maidtoiron 6 років тому

      Thanks. However, we've been dancing Modern Jive and West Coast Swing for a number of years and, during classes, we're always shown how to lead and are encouraged to change partners many times, to ensure the leader can confidently lead any follower and the follower can confidently follow any leader. This doesn't occur during the Ballroom and Latin classes we've been attending since September, so when we attend social dances, we only feel confident when dancing set routines with the regular partners with whom we've learned these routines. Therefore, do you teach lead and follow, so that we can each confidently dance with any partner, any routine, in fact any step, in any sequence as the music takes us - in other words: freestyle?

    • @EgilsSmagris
      @EgilsSmagris  6 років тому

      Usually I start with figures, then set routines and then ecourage to lead figures in different sequence. That means in reality our dancers can lead-follow basic figures and improvise (freestyle), although more difficult figures they can do only as choreographed routines. Only more experienced dancers can improvise any figure freestyle.

      OK, thanks, nice to know it's achievable, if only after much experience.

    Thank you for your explanation of the Open Telemark turn. But shouldn't the lady always be doing a heel turn? It looks like sometimes she's turning on her toes.I also have a general comment which in a small way applies you you Egils. It's very frustrating when the dance demonstrators, male, wear the long, baggy trousers which seem to be the trend at the present, hiding a good bit of exactly what the feet are doing (your's are just about acceptable) and the lady wears a beautiful 'gown' almost completely hiding their feet (your partner's dress is absolutely fine). What do you think of this? It's very irritating.Thank you, again.

    • @EgilsSmagris
      @EgilsSmagris  6 років тому

      Hi Chris, thanks for appreciating our videos. I agree that in Telemark Lady should always dance heel turn. About trousers- some sorts of them can be really unhelpful. Thanks again for your detailed comment. Best regards, Egils

    I am learning a figure but I think that my teacher gave me the wrong name. He said it was running. I am in a backwards position and then with my left foot I go backwards, my right foot again backwards, my left foot parallel the right foot and I finish with my left foot backwards. I would like to know how to do it correctly and what is the real name thank you

    • @EgilsSmagris
      @EgilsSmagris  9 років тому

      +romy simmonds so you are dancing three steps backward? It can be Feather Step from Slow Foxtrot. If you can send me video, may be I can say more.

    • @romysimmonds35
      @romysimmonds35 9 років тому

      +Egils Smagris I am talking about the slow waltz. Practically you do four steps in the three notes of the slow waltz. The male goes forward with the right foot then left and right on one note with a swaying moving to finish off with the left foot on the front. I have a short video but do not know how to send it.

      +romy simmonds then it's Running Feather which is basically Feather Step + Natural Pivot. Originally Foxtrot Figure, but can be danced in Waltz and Quickstep. I have on video slightly different version of this figure where Lady turns to Promenade and 3rd step does forward ua-cam.com/video/2QKNnwH-bZk/v-deo.html
