I've made lot's of mistakes in life but the one thing I got right was learning how to play guitar. I'll never be a Larry Carlton or a Louis Shelton but at least for awhile everyday I can be ME. Play on brothers and sisters...
I attended a master class with Carlton a couple of years ago. He's the real deal. I wasn't destined to devote enough time to music to make any headway, but I love those who did and who made being alive a little more fun.
nobody really equals Larry as an all around guitarist, and Lou basically gave us a hint when he said that he was out of his league. Lou, definitely, awesome, can't do everything that LC can do. Watch LC with Les Paul.
When I saw him live in Mexico City year 2009 he was playing one of his greatest hits. I shouted him Smiles and Smiles to Go! He ended this hit, left the electric guitar and then he started to play an acoustic guitar with Smiles and Smiles to Go. At the end of the concert he autographied my DVDs and my CDs from him and we took some pictures together. One of the greatest nights of my life!
I heard him speak of some lessons he took with Joe Pass maybe? Some major jazz player. It seems his instructor told him to play a blues improve, but in 8th notes only.
Gave me goosebumps. No cutting heads here, just two brilliant musicians playing together, beautifully complimenting each other. Thanks, Larry and Louie, for a lifetime of musical excellence.
I loved Louie's solo, especially when he really sunk his teeth into it around 5:25. But equally impressive is his backing he gave during Larry's solo, so tasteful and reserved, yet adds so much. Playing in a two-guitar band that's something I always took pride in, providing subtle backing to my dear friend, doing everything I could to make his solo great. He always did the same for me. It's a beautiful thing.
..Louie is terrific with one hechuva resume. We had the opportunity of meeting Larry backstage when he performed at Jazz on the Roof here in Indy on the evening of his 50th birthday. He’s a very humble guy and a real gentleman..
Thank you Larry Carlton for the many hours of listening pleasure you have provided me and others. And for serving God in making the most of your raw talents refining them to the level of art. God Bless.
Great musicians can't be rated on their technical prowess alone, the real gift comes from those who have that creative ability to know which notes and chords to play and when to play them. These two have that gift in spades.
being a session recording guitar player , is not only the best first sight music sheet reading, is about creativity and placing the melody solo at the right moment with great execution
Louie Shelton Top 5 ever!!This cat is one of those artists that just stops me from doing what I was doing and just listen to his majestic playing and style-man this dude is awesome-I call studio musicians that are the Top 5 at their instruments HEAVIES and he is one of them along with the other dude playing with him my all time favorite LC Larry Carlton
That was very cool right here to see Louie when Steve was doing his smooth jazz thing smiles and smiles to go was a big one on smooth jazz radio back-in-the-day Louie adapted really well to it. Being a session musician is about you learn it real quickly all different kinds of genres and you try to do what you can do to get it done
Wow - as a former player I thought I was pretty up on important guitarists, but until 2 days ago I had never heard of Louie Shelton. I guess I figured "Last Train to Clarksville" was Tedesco, or who knows who. Shelton is obviously consummate, great. I guess I should be embarrassed having never come across his name...
You know, that's one of the great things about youtube, it introduces new generations to many things, in this case, great guitarists of the past. A lot of people didn't know Jerry Reed was a great guitar player either but youtube has brought them into the fold. No need to feel embarrassed, just enlightened, and better off for the experience. Just watching this inspired me to dust off my 335 and give it a run around the block. Hope it does the same for others. Cheers and take care....
Larry's two greatest influences during his entire time in session work were of course, Louie Shelton,,, and,, the great Tommy Tedesco!!! Larry was able to meld the styles, and, tonality of them both. And voila!! Mr. 335~!~
Drummer is Gerry Pantazis from Melbourne Australia...Craig Newman on Bass and Phil Turcio on keys...also from Melbourne...1st gig with Larry...Rolls Royce musicians
As much as I have listened to Larry Carlton for decades....I almost have to think that Larry is like the prized "student" showcasing the "teacher" in this video.
The secret to being a great session player: Make the guy you're playing with sound really, really good. And when it's your turn to fill in a few bars with a solo, do great things. Both of these guys excel at all of this.
Fan of this tune since Alone But Never Alone, '87 or so. Read an LC interview mentioning Sweet Louie Shelton "showed us how to do this", being a session player. I viewed Louie's solo at least 5 times. I haven't been this happy in weeks. amazing.
We also heard Louie’s playing on Summer Breeze, Diamond Girl and other Seals and Crofts recordings. He produced and played on all their hit songs and hit albums. Those are stellar recordings, rivaling Steely Dan’s early 70s records for sheer excellent sound, impeccable musicianship and smart pop production, imho. I say this as a lifelong DanFan. When I first made it to a Seals and Croft’s show in 1973-ish, Louie was the bandleader/lead guitarist..might have been the only tour he went on with them. Lucky to catch him live that night. Idk why Louie’s Seals and Crofts credits aren’t mentioned much these days except maybe he wants it that way.
This what being a musician is all abaught sesisions and gigs all day all night long 24/7 nobody needs to know who you are it's all abaught the music in you ready to come out and these katts let it out...Roland J Gutierrez from Magdalena New Mexico USA 🇺🇸
Louie for me, he has been on so many influential songs, particularly early Jackson 5 as a kid the syncopation and riffs on those tunes really got my attention
I remember first hearing this from my father's collection... sometime in the early 90s although I know it's earlier ( Alone but never Alone, 1986) . Great track. All of Larry's compositions are pleasurable to the ear and done so professionally. I still listen to all of his modern and "vintage" instrumentals to this day
Reminds me of Pat Metheny with Jim Hall or even Steve Lukather with Larry - a master guitarist on stage with one of his own masters. Louie Shelton is a terrific player and clearly had a great influence on Larry's own playing. Two of the most tasteful electric guitarists I can think of in any case. Thanks for posting this!
My favourite Louie clip is his posting of 'Michael Jackson tribute' where he reprises, solo, his guitar on the Jackson Five's 'I Want You Back'. Fantastic playing.
Man ... that was a really nice living legend tribute Larry did. What better tribute can someone give than actually have the ‘tributee’ (if such a word) right there involved in the tribute
Wow .... Very well blended ... Louis really had some nice tasty complimenting flavors to Larry Carlton ... Man ... they both should had done an album together like how Larry & Lee did .... (with Lee Ritenour ...)
I've made lot's of mistakes in life but the one thing I got right was learning how to play guitar. I'll never be a Larry Carlton or a Louis Shelton but at least for awhile everyday I can be ME. Play on brothers and sisters...
bluesborn correct bro
I attended a master class with Carlton a couple of years ago. He's the real deal. I wasn't destined to devote enough time to music to make any headway, but I love those who did and who made being alive a little more fun.
Rock on bluesborn!
Amen. Music is our Escape and not a compition
I've made many mistakes in my life and one of them is playing guitar like ME
Not many guitarists still walking the earth that are Larry's equal...except for Louie! Bless you both!
And Lee Ritenour.
nobody really equals Larry as an all around guitarist, and Lou basically gave us a hint when he said that he was out of his league. Lou, definitely, awesome, can't do everything that LC can do. Watch LC with Les Paul.

It goes yo show that it ain’t about playing a lotta notes fast. It’s about playing the right ones well.
I heard him speak of some lessons he took with Joe Pass maybe? Some major jazz player. It seems his instructor told him to play a blues improve, but in 8th notes only.
Louie is such a modest American country guy with outsized talents. Way cool Louie.
Gave me goosebumps. No cutting heads here, just two brilliant musicians playing together, beautifully complimenting each other. Thanks, Larry and Louie, for a lifetime of musical excellence.

These two masters of guitar are a match made in Heaven.
Man, I wish they'd do an album!
Outstanding performance I love it
..Louie is terrific with one hechuva resume. We had the opportunity of meeting Larry backstage when he performed at Jazz on the Roof here in Indy on the evening of his 50th birthday. He’s a very humble guy and a real gentleman..
Two of the Greatest studio and Touring guitarist of our time. Bad boys, so Tasty. No junk in their playing.
Larry and Louie! They compliment each other so perfectly!
Thats what pros do.
Thank you Larry Carlton for the many hours of listening pleasure you have provided me and others. And for serving God in making the most of your raw talents refining them to the level of art. God Bless.

The two most accomplished guitarists on the planet on stage!
I play this video more time than I can count - Always a fall back when lost for things to play. A true masterclass version!
BTW, in the intro, he introduces 'played for Monkees, Jackson 5 - shit, how old is this guy and still has the touch of a viruoso!
being a session recording guitar player , is not only the best first sight music sheet reading, is about creativity and placing the melody solo at the right moment with great execution
Like a stimulating conversation, this is what a jam should be. Absolutely beautiful 😍
This is absolutely a beautiful thing! This is what I'd want Heaven to be like...
He makes it look so easy. Larry is one of my favorite guitarists.
I can not tell a lie, this song did wonders for my constipation. Jajaja hahaha God bless 2 my heroes and everyone.
Fantastic seeing these 2 guitar legends together
Such a joy to listen to two great contemporary guitar players.
That was very cool right here to see Louie when Steve was doing his smooth jazz thing smiles and smiles to go was a big one on smooth jazz radio back-in-the-day Louie adapted really well to it.

Larry, thanks much for featuring the great Louie !
I just recently found out about Louie Shelton. Seems like such a mellow guy but he just rips on the guitar. Great jam with Larry.
Same here.
Yeah me too, very tasty player.
Incredibly beautiful melody, performed “LIVE” by some great players.
Life is a journey. Hope you have listened to the Hellecasters too.

My guitar buddy from HS turned me on to Tedesco!! Professionalism personified!
Wow how great was that
Larry is recognized as one of the great jazz artist. While Louie is underrated. He deserves much more recognition.
Louie is only underrated by people who aren't musicians. Musicians know who he is and love his work
Wow, that was just perfect
What a fantastic guitarist Louie is!
Two absolute Gems ! Love it over and over again Year in year out thank you both
Larry is crazy great! No one matches him as being an all-around guitarist. LC is my favorite❤
Love the band especially the drummer ...so tasteful.
Exactly! I was thinking the same thing.
Drummer is Gerry Pantazis from Melbourne Australia...Craig Newman on Bass and Phil Turcio on keys...also from Melbourne...1st gig with Larry...Rolls Royce musicians
They both have a fantastic tone!!!

Love Louie! His solo on Lowdown is amazing!
Just so outstanding and so very tasteful and melodic
Everybody here is spot on. Perfect.
Man, they play so musically! What a treat.
Doesn't get much better than this..!
Reminds me of Pat Metheny with Jim Hall or even Steve Lukather with Larry - a master guitarist on stage with one of his own masters. Two of the best right THERE...! Love it...!!!
I remember it being called "miles and miles to go" 5th page of mel bay modern method circa 1970. I also embelished the hell out of it.

As good as it gets! What a treat!
I'm nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs!
Man ... that was a really nice living legend tribute Larry did. What better tribute can someone give than actually have the ‘tributee’ (if such a word) right there involved in the tribute
So beautiful!
What idiots come here and hit the dislike button? This is truly beautiful
What a solo by Carlton
Louie Shelton ripping it up... awesome!
Life is not fair at all. They play notes on their guitars that do not exist on my fretboard.
Absolutely Beautiful....
Great stuff!
Awesome!
Yeah.. Real nice.
Just superb.
