Mourinho keeps faith in Robben

  • Chelsea vs Newcastle 2004/2005.
Despite Robben’s frustrating period with Chelsea, this video shows how at one point Mourinho trusted that Robben could deliver. He kept him in the game even though Robben lost the ball countless times. However, even in the clips you might see that there is talent, and perhaps this is why the manager's faith was finally rewarded at the end of the game.

Exactly, which is why it pisses me off when certain coaches consistently and stubbornly persist imposing their tactics that involves forcing a player to play out of their natural position/role. Some players may adapt, but if u keep trying over and over and over and you see that that player just isnt playing well under the way YOU want to ay him. Maybe its time to play him where you know, he is good at playing.

Too injury prone while in England if memory serves. Later on when Bayern's doctors and physios eventually sorted his injury woes, he was a great player. @@nozone4109 part of the reason those 2 reached the level they got to was being reasonably injury free. If their training had been broken up several times a season by injury, they'd have lost sharpness... in fact after Euro2008 Ronaldo did have ankle surgery and took a month or so to regain that elite match fitness. Also had a little time out early in his Real Madrid career. It wasn't until his 2nd year there when Mourinho arrived, and Ronaldo successfully demanded to play every minute of every game, that his goal stats shot up. On the pitch for 100% of the season, a free-role with little to no defensive responsibility - so energy saved for personal glory instead of working for the team. Don't get me wrong Messi is almost as bad, Robben wasn't famed for tracking back either.
Robben's legacy is mostly success with Bayern. But that would be different if not for the fine margins of 2010 world cup final. Although in the direct comparison with Messi and Ronaldo, they haven't scored in international cup finals either, so can't be too harsh on Robben for that.

That was a sharp observation if you ask me. To find proof for my statement just look at other sports, kickboxer badr Hari was an excellent new kid on the block in the zeroes beating the biggest names and was dubbed the golden boy of kickboxing. Also the Italians never awarded the golden boy award to robben, a certain argentine fella snatched it when robben was breaking through.
