I remember being there at this talk. Now I've been practicing this meditation for 54 years, and each morning and evening, it is fresh and new and sparkling with infinite simplicity. Thank you, Maharishi.

It is the tradition when passing on knowledge in the Vedic Oral tradition for the first Sutra to tell the listener what the teaching is about.
Sutra One. And now the teaching on Yoga begins.
The second describes what Yoga is.
Sutra Two. Yoga is the settling of the Mind into Silence/stillness.
Be still and know : )
I can assure you The Maharishi is the real deal. From my own personal experience practicing his most wonderful Tm and Tm Siddhi's for some years now. Jai Guru Dev

Indeed. Herein is explained all the ignorance surrounding the achievement of an integrated life. And herein, Maharishi very simply corrects the myriad of wrong interpretations. The glory of a life in union is easily accessible and the birthright of every person.

      @@marcelomiceli5291 Hmmm?
EEG of people in the deepest level of samadhi shows that there is still thought-like activity even though you can't be aware of it.
ANd as the Yoga sutra says:
      * Samadhi with an object of attention takes the form of gross mental activity, then subtle mental activity, bliss and the state of amness.
      * The other state, samadhi without object of attention [asamprajnata samadhi], follows the repeated experience of cessation, though latent impressions [samskaras] remain.
      -Yoga Sutras I.17-18
"latent impressions" aka samskaras can be measured even after cessation of awareness.
Mind-like activity doesn't cease simply because we can no longer be aware of it.
in THEORY, one might eventually get to that point, but aside [possibly] from brief instants lasting less than a tenth of a second, such a state of complete cessation of any thought-like activity has never been documented in anyone who is not unconscious or in non-REM sleep. See Figure 2 of this study for graphic illustration of what complete cessation of thought during the ultimate samadhi *might* look like in an EEG trace, assuming my interpretation is correct:
*Enhanced EEG alpha time-domain phase synchrony during Transcendental Meditation: Implications for cortical integration theory*
      sci-hub.se/10.1016/j.sigpro.2005.07.009
This might be brief instants of *kaivalya* - true "one-pointedness" - where observer, observed and process of observation have merged completely, leaving only resting *by Iteself* in complete internal harmony (AKA brahman).
      or it might not.

Anyway I comment in this video because I don't believe there is a difference in saying that the sutras are 8 limbs or 8 steps.

    • @LawsonEnglish
      @LawsonEnglish 2 роки тому +1

@@marcelomiceli5291 The deepest level of samadhi is the cessation of awareness.
And yes, there is a huge difference between 8 steps and 8 limbs. You can do each limb as a practice all its own, and in theory, eventually become enlightened. But, as is done in the Yoga Sutra, you can show that each limb moves one towards samadhi, and so, if you must chose a single limb, chose samadhi (dhyana being the process of moving through layers of samadhi towards or even into the deepest level).
All the world's religions and cultures have their own equivalent of the yamas and niyamas anyway, and while pranayama and asana are useful, they are still "external" to the heart of Yoga.

And yet, the late Swami Shatananda Saraswati, then Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath, was guest of honor and keynote speaker at the first TM teacher training course, held in India back in 1961. According to the Shankaracharya, TM is the master key that unlocks all the locks of Vedanta.
Hardly a major mis-step to chose to teach the "master key that unlocks all the locks."
And of course, one has to ask: which commemorative postage stamp has the Indian government issued in YOUR honor for your "original contributions to Yoga and Meditation" - that is, the creation and program of teaching Transcendental Meditation to the world.
On the subject of Ahimsa directly, in a study on 6800 high school students, half doing TM, done by the University of Chicago, the researchers reported that after only 9 months of TM, 15 minutes twice daily at school, arrests for violent crime in the meditating students was 65-70% lower than the arrest rate for violent crime int he non-meditating students. This was the most dramatic effect from any procedure that the researchers have every studied.

[9:23 pm, 11/09/2022] Adhiyoga: I went through his speech for a while. I cannot continue for the whole time. This is what I have to say: On one hand, he has his ideas of Transcedental Meditation and Consciousness/Awareness. That is fine. Actually, All the Meditation is Transcendental . There is no need to call it Transcendental.
[9:24 pm, 11/09/2022] Adhiyoga: Second, he is not explaining Patanjali's Sutras. Because, he states Yoga begins with Consiousness/Awareness and Ends in Awareness. That is B.S. In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras Yoga begins with the experience of suffering of Human Life. And, not with Consciousness crap.
[9:26 pm, 11/09/2022] Adhiyoga: One more point will suffice to complete my critique. He says Speaking Truth cannot be practiced. It has come out of consciousness. Then, why is Patanjali mentioning it as one of the Yamas. He should have told to develop the consciousness and there will be no need to mention Satya. Maharshi has not got preliminary understanding of Sanskrit.
[9:27 pm, 11/09/2022] Adhiyoga: The first limb is called Yama (which are 5 items). Yama means Restraint. Restraint means you have to do something, not develop awareness. Niyama means Proactive discipline, where one has to do something positively.
[9:28 pm, 11/09/2022] Adhiyoga: I do not want to talk bad about other work Maharshi did. But, to say his explanation clears Patanjali's Yoga Sutras is like telling when one becomes Physicist, he knows how a baby is formed and delivered.

Most meditation practices are teh exact OPPOSITE of "transcendental." They take one away from sense-of-self, which is our appreciation of the mind-wandering activity of the default mode network. Every other well-studied practice represses the DMN, supporting the modern Buddhist concept of anatta. The neo-Advaitin "who am I?" inquiry does the same thing.
Sense-of-self emerges as awareness fades, even while the brain remains alert. This process is called *dhyana* - motion or journey of the discriminative process [towards zero discrimination, AKA asamprajnata samadhi]. Simply repressing verbal thinking via concentration and mindfulness does the exact opposite of allowing the mind to wander inward towards complete cessation-of-awareness.

      1. I have no problems with Transcendental Meditation Methodology or Teachings of Maharshi, etc. 2. What I am saying is : in this particular video what is he saying is not what Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are saying. I am NOT a disciople of Patanjali. I am only a student of Yoga Sutras. 3. I have studies Yoga Sutras of Patanjali deeply and taught up to PhD level students. 4. Adhiyoga is a system created by me. And, Adhiyoga Sutras are my OWN Sutras, not Patanjali Sutras. These are historically second Sutras after those of Patanjali. ..... I may have repeated and told what you already understood. But, I just wanted to summarise again. • @AdhiyogaSystem
      @AdhiyogaSystem 2 роки тому

@@LawsonEnglish Thanks. Now, I think I am able to understand what you wish to say. This is my comment:
This is I.2 of the Yoga Sutras (the first line to explain anything):
Yoga is the complete settling of the activity of the mind.
      * This is a reference to pure consciousness.
===> No Sir. Chitta is NOT Mind. The definition of Chitta is not given by Patanjali. That is the biggest drawback of the Sutras. You have to read my Chapter "Chitta Prakaranam" in the Patanjali Code. Also, Vruttis are not just activity of Chitta. It is the Modification of Chitta from its Sattva Guna. It contains not only the activity (which generally refers to the Present Time), but also the impressions from the Previous Births. Also, Consciousness is not the term indicated by Purusha. Yes, Drashta is the Consciousness in a way. Or, I do not even mind Pusuha being called Consciousness. But, context of Purusha is not in terms of only current activities. Purusha is a principle derived from the Sankhya System.
This is IV.34, the last line:
      * "In the absence of activity, the purpose of purusha is fulfilled, and what remains is kaivalya - the infinite power of consciousness established in its own nature."
===> It is NOT infinite power of conscious. It is simply Purusha (or Consciousness if you would like to call it so). It is NOT in the absece of activity: but when the Gunas get absorbed into the Primordial Nature (Prakruti) (pratiprasava) and when the purpose of Gunas (purushartha) is totally finished (purusharthashunya), then absoluteness of Purusha, that is devoid of Bondage with Prakruti takes place. And, that is called Residing in its own nature. Residing in its own nature refers to being devoid of Bondage. drashtru-drushyayoh sanyogo heya hetuh... eetc. The starting point of Yoga Sutras is given in 2.14 parinamataapasankaraduhkhairguanavruttivirodhachcha duhkhameva sarvam vivekinah". Same as the first karika of Sankhya... duhkhatrayaabhighaataajjidnyas... etc. The starting point of Patanjali which is borrowed from Sankhya and entire vedantic philosophy is :;;;; The human life is always sorrowful. And, the one who wants to get rid of that sorrow completely has to separate Purusha from Prakruti... kaivalya.
It is hard to discuss the whole thiing here.
      OM ShantiH
