Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life. However, once you make it a job...it takes a lot of work and can drain passion.

It doesn't drain the passion if you figure out a way to do it on your own terms.

@Chewjitsu professor coach Chewster, what do you do to keep the spark lit and not feeling like your passion is a job?
Have you done a video on this? If love to see one if not.
Thank you for everything you do for the community. You're amazing.

Affirming stuff, chewy. I can attest to this as well. I’m essentially a “starving artist” splitting my attention between 2 music projects, writing books/poetry, making art, and on top of that training/teaching bjj 3-5 times a week. I have two degrees, no debt/kids/mortgage. I can’t afford fancy trips or new cars or anything but I’ve never been happier. I’d live in an rv if it meant I could keep this life up 🔥

I was lucky and my wife and I have a careers that provide us with enough income to also run our gym while making enough to cover rent and gear. I try not to buy things and just build the gym or save. Going on our second year of business with about 60 students so far. Hoping to hit 80 this year.

"Money may not buy happiness, but I'd rather cry in a Bugatti than on the bus"
"The average American dude will sell his soul and his family's future for a shiny new truck and a car payment."
Were the controversial quotes about money and contentment that came to my mind. "Make a living" as in old school barely scrape by with enough to eat and the rest of the time dedicated to training OR getting so good that they win world competitions for a living OR starting a gym and teaching classes
All of the above? I imagine that's what it would take to be able to live off jiu jitsu

I absolutely love this universal message. It’s all to easy to get lost in the “trappings” of society and lose yourself completely. This message is a reminder that some things are not as important as we can make them out to be, and that more important may be to nurture integrity and patiently build your vision despite the world and often somewhat yourself casting you a fool. Nothing could be better than reaping the rewards of owning yourself in the end.

option #2... keep your passion as a side hussle. find a work-from-home day job, take laptop with you to dojo. train, teach and work all day :)

      Great ideas.
Still would be hard to implement if your drowning in debt and your bjj isn’t very good.
There will be lots of opportunities for people to take. My focus on the video was talking about being in a place where you can snag them when they show up.

This is all well and good but why not answer the guy's question more directly, like what about you. It looks like you make your money as a gym owner. That recent belt promotion video had a lot of people and their gym fees are going somewhere. So collecting gym memberships ( from hobbyists) looks like the main way to live off bjj.

Chewy, fantastic video. I felt this one, as you dove away from your usual stoic self. You oozed compassion, frustration, hopefulness. It was a pleasure to see you open up. As a new white belt of 6 months you've really lit a fire in my belly. Much respect. Oss!

For me, I did what I did to get what I wanted when I got into training. It was the dojo I was at, that betrayed me by lying on me therefore I got kicked out. After that I got back into training. But there wasn’t any new opportunities. And then I realized I wasted all my money and life it seems like on people who actually hated me and wanted to see me fail.

I’m a (young) psychologist and if more people would not just listen to, but actually believe you, I’m afraid I’d be out of my job 😂 however that’d be a price with paying because so many people are miserable in chasing something they don’t understand or want.

Happiness is a state of mind. It comes from your thoughts, not from having stuff. If you think stuff will make you happy, it's because of how you think of that stuff. That's why there are unhappy people with lots of stuff and happy people who don't have much. The difference is the mindset. Just by thinking you need stuff to make you happy, you make yourself unhappy. Your thoughts are more your reality than any stuff you have. You're always surrounded by your thoughts, and you bring them with you everywhere you go.

This was heartfelt and good advice for someone in the right place to act on it. Most people never chase any dreams, neither their own nor others'. Your story was truly encouraging to hear. I'm trying to raise my boy to ignore the chatter and noise that make us all feel judged, and to follow his interests and dreams, to chase bluebirds if he feels so inclined. Hearing your experience, and seeing the honest emotion on your face, was a joy.

Always study and train for a skill that is ESSENTIAL for society to survive eg medical sciences, engineering, metal trades, plumber even. Anything that the world absolutely needs to survive.
After that, you can do whatever you love etc like bjj, mma etc.
But get a core essential skill first.

    • @UnskilledGrappler

      This.
Been training in one martial art or another most of my life. Found BJJ at 20, and I knew it would lead me to my life’s goal: own and operate a martial arts school.
Life had other plans. Now I’m 44 with rheumatoid arthritis and a wife who, without the good medical insurance my career provides, would be unable to get the care she needs for ongoing health issues.
My body can’t do jiujitsu much longer, I’m afraid. But I’ve continued to train as often as possible, so it’s still a part of my life.
In the meantime, I’ll be retired at 50 with a guaranteed salary and medical benefits for life. My pension even passes to my wife if I die first.
I LOVE training. Saw myself living in a small place above my school and living a minimalist existence based around things that matter (not material crap).
But if I had chosen that path, I’d be facing some REALLY tough times.
      Weigh your decisions carefully.
