In my previous video I covered the multifunctional work-top to find new purpose for my Multi Purpose Vehicle.
It proves to be very practical.
It is being used on all my trips now and it greatly adds to the convenience of my outdoor life.
As a next step I am looking for a way to have more sheltered space around the multifunctional work-top while parked recreationally.
The space should offer basic protection against the elements.
When the weather is throwing a spanner in the works, I don’t want to resort to seeking shelter inside the MPV, or worse, to have to cut my trip short.
Instead I want to be able to continue my recreational activities.
Therefore, I am pursuing the development of a new concept that provides shelter and comfort around the rear side of the MPVwhile allowing for panoramic views of the surroundings.

I have had this for a month now, and have it set up in my 'yard' (I live on 5 acres) to test it out before taking it camping. I am really enjoying sleeping outdoors, and can't wait to take it on a real camping trip! I am glad that it can stand alone, as I think I prefer that to having it attached to my small Subaru Crostrek. Perhaps with a full sized van or SUV, it would integrate better, but I am satisfied. The straight sides make a world of difference as far as usable space is concerned. I too, would like clearer instructions and a video on installing the fly/rain sheet. I haven't needed to use it yet, but I am skeptical that it will hold up to rainy weather. I live in the desert Southwest USA, and a lighter colored option, in cream or light sage, would make more sense for camping here, as anything black heats up like an oven when the sun hits it, in spite of the silvery interior, and finding a shady spot is usually difficult at best. I am thinking of painting it a lighter color with fabric paint. With the huge openings though, ventilation is super! I received mine without the fly sheet and a couple other accessories, but customer support sent them to me promptly. I must have gotten a new iteration with old instructions because it said the roof support was a small pole. Now they send a stiff piece of mylar like film, that is to be rolled up and inserted in the skinny bag the orange supports come in. It works fine and packs away unfolded much better than a pole would. The material is very sturdy, but in real camping conditions - deserts, mountains, etc., - I would recommend laying a plastic tarp down first to prevent wear and tear, and bring weights if you think the ground where you are going will be too hard for tent pegs, especially the plastic spiral pegs that come in the kit. I am sure they work great on lawns and commercial campgrounds. Finally, the first attempt at assembly was a challenge. I am female, mid 50s, about 160lbs, 5' 8". I plan on camping a lot solo, so I have to be able to pitch it by myself. The first time actually took a couple days because of the missing pieces and the extreme heat that week. I left it up for a week to air out, took it down, which was very easy. The second attempt to put it up in a different location took about 20 minutes, including laying the ground tarp and securing the guy lines. I ended up using locally sourced rocks of about 5 lbs each, because the screw pegs came right out our loose soil. That is another reason I recommend taking weights along. I also secured the base at each corner with regular aluminum tent stakes. It has been up for weeks and so far so good! And I can't say enough good things about their customer support. They have been great, making sure I had all of my parts, and sent extra buckles because the one used to secure to the tailgate broke right away.

I absolutely love what you came up with. I would REALLY like to buy it. I have, like you, come up really short when looking for the “perfect” solution for a shelter that both extends the livable space of my van camper and can be freestanding when I want to run out for a quick bite, or if I’m base camping and need to hold my site while I’m exploring for the day. My perfect solution also needs to have lots of sun and bug protection, and should be easy to set up, tear down, and store. This is exactly what you’ve created, and it’s the only one on the market. I need it! How do I get it?!

Having a flat roof with no center roof supports mean if it starts to rain you would get soaked having to take this shelter down. The rain water would pool on the roof and cause it to collapse or possibly even tear, depending on the strength of the material. The roof must have a peak or upward bow to keep the rain shedding. I’m guessing that the designer may not have had a lot of camping experience. Because any awning or tent type enclosure really should be made of a lighter color in order to reflect heat rather than absorbing it.

Hi Thelvoryman, we have a roof supporter on the center.

Hi there, love this and I’m looking to see if there is anything available where I live in uk. Have you thought about incorporating some foldable solar panels into the design? Not sure what kind of power you could get, but I was thinking about the little foldable ones that hikers can get. Perhaps it would be possible to have something on top that could be used for lighting or something else?

A lighter color would be great! Wouldn't heat up so much in the sun. :-) The idea is wonderful! I really love it.

interfacing with the car should be accomplished using a bunched-elastic "sock" that will self-seal and adapt to different sizes... or a drawstring to cinch...
hell, use a WHOLE car cover as part of this... then you can protect the whole car from tree sap/leaves while you camp.. .some even have door zippers... then you just cut and stich that cover (or the back of it for just your purpose) to interface with the pop up tent.

Ever think of making it in a white color? I ordered it, but the sun would heat the black fabric quickly to overcome a Prius's ability to keep it cool inside in the Summer. I would be very willing to test this out for you. I live in Michigan, USA, so our Summers do get hot, as well.

Great lookin tent. Is there any way of making this freestanding with other support so the tent can hold your site. I might need to drive the minivan to a trailhead or go for supplies.

Planning a 3 month trip through northern Africa and do not want to tow a trailer to transport a bulky tent. What is the possibity to enlarge the pod to 2,5 meters in lenght to allow for a camping bed to fit?

Hi there, Just bought one of these and after a long wait finally got it. I'd love more videos on how to put it all together. One that shows putting the fly on and also more detail about how to secure that sides that are over the car. The magnets are rather flimsy. Also in the directions, it mentions some kind of tub that is used to help hold the rain fly up. I never got one of those. And where does the rain fly go? Over the carsule itself or partially over the car?
Not clear at all. The directions are difficult to follow as well and hard to see what is required to do. Also I have lots of bundles of string and don't know what these are for. I'm looking forward to enjoying this sometime very soon. Many thanks. Joanna

I know the string is for guy lines. I would love to see a video of the rainfly install. I'm really considering one of these because it looks like I could do it myself. Do wish the price would come down. Maybe with more videos and exposure, it will become more popular. I think it's genius!
