love the sound of a DD finding it's idle and the smell of the exhaust, being a mechanic I have worked on a few Detroit's but not many, I do know that they slobber some oil, the blackest, nastiest greasy stuff you can imagine and it gets all over you especially working on the lower parts of the engine. When driving a Detroit engine, the thing sounds like your revving it hard but in all actually it's only running half of that, what gets me is the lower oil pressure in most of these engines, at low revs the ones we had( 6v71s) had lower oil pressure than say a NTC 350 Cummins or the Macks we had. A old mechanic once told me, how you drive a Detroit, slam your finger in the door then drive it....lol.We had a old Diamond Reo cement mixer with a 6v71 in it that was kept at our shop during winter, every spring, or when they needed it we got her running, it had fairly decent oil pressure when cold, so we warmed her up for them, that's when he told me how he runs one(this one had a Alison automatic), he backed out got squared up in the road pulled out on the highway and just slammed the throttle it sounded like it was going to fly out from the hood, then the trans shifted and it almost sounded normal, I ask him why he ran it that way he told me that slam the door thing, they wont make any power unless it was run in the upper RPM range another words Screaming, because of the auto trans.Love the sound of the DD

I was forced to drive one and it had the logging bunks on it. The transmission once figured out wasn't to bad but detroit never ever lugged more than a foot before they bitch jerked so it was the first four and then coast fifth gear and keep it right to the floor boards. I remembered it as soon as he fought the split. I couldn't stand to drive one a hundred yards nowadays

getting that GMC started without having any stuck fuel injectors is shocking. I've never seen any 2 stroke sit for 2 years or longer that didn't have a few injectors stuck. That's either, very good luck, or someone had it running at least every 6 months for at least 2 hours .

I've worked on a bunch of those the stuck injectors, are usually pretty easy to get unstuck. It is possible that one or two could have been border line, and starting and running got them to free up a bit. Especially if the fuel was old and still had a lot lubracity to it, that could have helped as well.
It did sound good though, congratulations for a job well done

Sparky Mccormick...... there is no shortage of them. From salvage yard "take outs" all the way to fully Re-manned with new engine warranties. You can even get fully re-manned (remanufactured - NOT a "rebuilt") engines right from Detroit Diesel, and there is no shortage of parts and rebuild kits as well, for All the 2 cycle series except for the series 51 &110. Kits and parts for the 6-110 can only be had through W.W.Willams in OH.
There are quite a few DD Factory Authorized re-man centers around the US (& globally) with Series 53, 71, 92 & 149 engines available. Stewart & Stevenson, Powerline Components, Detroit Diesel, Diesel Parts Direct, Adelmans (have running "take outs" etc, etc), Delaney & Ahlf, are but just a FEW of MANY sources for Detroit Diesels (2 cycle), parts, kits, etc, etc, etc. I hope this helps you a little bit.
