Mikaela and the band absolutely rip☮️❤️🌞 Saw them in Amherst, MA over the summer, and it was truly transcendental🌏 It’s the music of life… Awesome program KEXP, love everything about this.
Like a beautiful floaty mash up of Brian Eno and First Aid Kit.. Well that is the crazy cascade of fruity sonic flavours that are floating through the void of my numb skull head after first hearing the opening song here.... Later on I am getting trippy flashbacks of sixties flower power Beatles era and then some residue of mid nineties Kula Shaker... Just for the record: very very beautiful talented musicians here.. Thanks as always KEXP for making the complicated and messy world we all live in a better place. 😊😊
My first time hearing you guys and I'm blown away. Such beautiful music. Mikaela is like a princess of Spring, Summer and Fall; what an amazing voice. The band are amazing musicians. I hope you guys are around for decades to come. Cinderella was a great song to start of with; thats what grabbed my attention. Saturday Morning I keep rewinding and playing over and over. ❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣
Hot damn, I was kind of hoping they'd do a Dead cover because they do that amazingly well, but then they just went far out in their own way. Pedal steel player is on point with those effects pedals, guitarist coming in with the tasty sax action, rhythm section locked in a trance, Mikaela in another dimension reminding me of Alice Coltrane's playing...all around seriously impressive performance Mikaela and Co. !!
I refuse to believe the harp can be sampled synthesized and played like a human. There's no other instrument that evokes certain aural emotions. I got turned on to Mikaela's music by her work with Circles Around The Sun. I play it constantly, and am in love with this band. So now, what's this?? Mikaela plays keyboards and sings like a godess too?? This performance is fantastic!! Thank You!!!
I’ve been listening to this almost every day since it came out and just can’t get bored with it. The whole long trippy part in the middle with the heavenly sax solo over the juicy slide guitar and the marvelous harp solos is just next level awesomeness. Followed by a Thank you Mikaela and your band of top musicians, thank you KEXP editors and sound technicians for letting me discover this amazing experience.
So so good...............................pedal steel is amazing. See you in Burlington!!!!!!!!!! Stick around New England. I'd like to see several shows in a row
I'm so happy to see this! I found Mikaela years ago when I was watching harp covers on youtube, and I've been following her band ever since. They're amazing and just keep getting better
She’s so awesome, whole band too. Had the great privilege of seeing this lineup in a small venue in Ithaca NY the night before the Cornell 77 commemorative Dead and Co show this past May. I remember thinking if I couldn’t sneak into the show (got a miracle pit bracelet and strolled in) I’d still be completely satisfied having experienced that show the night before. Totally wonderful time all love for this band. Saw her again last summer when she came out with DSO at the jubilee in Legend valley Ohio for drums/space. Utterly sublime.
Mikaela and Southern Star are such a tight band. If you enjoyed this you should check out their cover of the Grateful Dead's Bird Song. It's transcending!
So satisfying to watch upu guys kill it on one of my fave programs. That was amazing, an insant classic. Always waiting for you guys to come back to the 585. And to new fans, go grab her latest album as well as her limited Relix release.
I heard and FELT a little Pat Metheny and Weather Report in there.... this is so SO good. UPDATE: i have this on repeat, listened at least 20 times already - it brings the energy AND mellows it out!
Mikaela, you ever play with someone on Kora? Steel pan might be interested as well .. *Well done Southern Star! When the sax come in, I get Dorothy Ashby vibes. Commenters mention Pharaoh & Alice, I get that. ⚡✨🧙🏾♂️✨⚡
Except that Mikaela Davis is a solo artist. Southern Star are a great band, and they really should have introduced them as Mikaela David and Southern Star (which is the name of the album she named after the band) but she works separately apart from this group with other bands like Circles Around the Sun, in addition to performing solo sets minus a backing band, so you don't really know what you're talking about.
I'm just glad there are people in the world driven to make music this incredible.
Incredible is the exact word I used…
My life became slightly better since I’ve discovered this & been listening to it every night before going to sleep
Met her the autumn before covid. Very warm person, made me an instant fan. Super stoked to see her on kexp!
I'm tempted to create another UA-cam account, just to upvote again.

Awesome program KEXP, love everything about this.
I watched her covering elliott smith's song long time ago and now she signs to the record label that elliott smith was there.
I, uh, was walking thru time when Jerry went against the decree set by those I've been sent to fight
This is real....all kidding aside

Damn, that guitar work was excellent. Also, I'm a sucker for the steel guitar
This band has such a fine groove. Mikaela's voice is nicely matched to the incredible musicianship, COOL.
Omg, I’m literally wearing a Melody’s Echo Chamber shirt as I watch this.
That change at 9.04 blows my mind every time.
From Dead influences to Alice Coltrane and Pharoah. These guys are cosmic! Love y'all.
Absolutely nailed it.
I saw her play with weir and the Wolfe Brothers, it was a treat
I’d say more “Faye Webster with a harp” than Alice or Pharooah, but definitely the Dead/Allman southern jam rock thing going on! Really nice!!

Man, you guys just keep getting better and better!

In the cadenza, she plays harp like a kayagaum. Neat!
Wow, hooked immediately. So psyched to hear more from you. Thank you, KEXP for the introduction, as usual!
This sounds so beautiful.

Hey Seattle ya think Marshawn should have run on that play?
Austin Powr kinda"Groovy Baby uh Ya BABY"YA......😊
The harp was missing all along
Wavy hair-dont care
Naming the band after one of the members is cringe, IMO. Everyone here is talented. They should have one name that represents them all.

Imposter syndrome
Great musocian, great sound and crap video editing.
Astounding!
