I put screen wire over my rain barrel and use a glue stick to keep it in place. Then drill a hole at the bottom and put a hose spigot in the hole then seal with a glue stick. Water without skeeters.
Thank you, you ladies are awesome. And I love your tattoos 💪💪🤘🤘 The stick in the water as an escape route is genius. I am constantly saving little bugs from my dogs’ outdoor water bowl 😅😂
Important! "Add a New Dunk Every Month!" Each dunk is good for 30 days. Just a 1/4 of a dunk will do, because each dunk is designed to work on 100 square feet of surface area (ponds, stock tanks, etc), and a bucket is just ... a bucket. The dunks easily break into fourths. Buckets of' Doom, along with common sense prevention like emptying saucers, toys, gutters; and with using a fan when sitting outside (mosquitoes are poor fliers) make a huge difference in the quality of human outdoor time. Thank you for this segment, Volunteer Gardener! More Buckets of Doom mean fewer yard sprays of pesticides that kill indiscriminately and end up in the watershed. Let's bring back the lightning bugs and bumblebees and butterflies and all the little things that run the world!
I put a hydroponic basket lid on my skeeter death buckets to keep critters/pollinators from falling in... too dangerous for kids and critters to have open bucket with no covering of any sort
So I just started this about two weeks ago. The smell of the rotting grass is pretty bad. It almost seems like my yard has MORE mosquitos because of the smell. Thoughts?
If the grass smells bad, it usually means there's too much of it. Just a handful is enough, and even better if it's already dry (like dried clippings from a mower). Too much organic matter (rotting vegetation, accumulating algae, etc.) can actually interfere w/ the Bti action. My advice would be to dump and start over, and keep the same dunk if it's only 2 weeks old. (the dunk will last another 2 weeks before needing to be replaced.) Another thought: buckets that are in full sun all day are more likely to develop smelly algae. Buckets that get shade are more likely to be near where mosquitoes hang out anyway, and should get a lot more eggs.
you should place the bucket AWAY from where you will be sitting outside, the fermented water is Love Potion #9 for lady skeeters exactly why you put the grass/hay in the water to begin with... so place the bucket far away from your play/hang out area.. I put mine about 30 -50 ft away from my outdoor sitting area. watch the Dr. Tallamy mosquito bucket video for more details. Add a new 1/4 dunk every 30 days and "restart" your bucket every 3 months
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, BTi in water used on plants will not harm them, even food plants for people. But check your particular brand of BTi in case there are added ingredients, just in case. (I use Summit brand dunks, which are fine.)
BTI bacteria mosquito dunks are safe for humans, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and all pollinators/insects OTHER than mosquito larvae and one type of gnat. Totally safe. Just read the back of the dunk package when you next visit a garden center or hardware store.. they all carry them
only 1/4 dunk new every 30 days during the warm months you want to manage skeeters. watch Dr. Tallamy's mosquito bucket video for more details and science information about the truth of mosquito fogging chemicals and how the bucket works
the fact you didnt even just take the extra minute to show everyone the process is kind of a waste of a platform. At least you shared this info because it is genius but really wasteful. Now they have to go to another channel instead.
Making one (or more!) this weekend, thanks for showing me how!
Thinking I'll turn my pond into a doom destination.
I put screen wire over my rain barrel and use a glue stick to keep it in place. Then drill a hole at the bottom and put a hose spigot in the hole then seal with a glue stick. Water without skeeters.
But the purpose of the mosquito dunk is to kill mosquitos, you want them to go in and lay their eggs. If you have no mosquitos, great!

Nice. Thanks 👍

exactly!!! ZERO reason to put more than 1/4 in at a time total waste.
Wow! Thank you!! Anything in your back of tricks for flies -the "Rescue" fly trap we use smells horrific so maybe something that doesn't smell?
this bucket is about protecting pollinators and saying "NO" to mosquito fogging ... in this community flies are pollinators and welcome in the garden

This surprised me! I thought you were going to say to put Dawn detergent or some kind of oil in the bucket. I like your idea much better! lol!

I was wondering, if I were to use this weed, mosquito pod rainwater infusion in the garden would it harm plants or vegetables in the garden?

Key point to add- you need to add another dunk every month, right?
Yes. Add another dunk every 30 days.

what kills the adult mosquitos going in to lay the eggs?
they only live like 2 weeks.
How many buckets do u use per acre?
100
Wow... thats much more than I expected

To watch her fill a bucket 1/4 of the way with water and leave???
