I had 6.5 diopters of astigmatism...wore glasses since I was 19. I had my cataract surgery in Sioux City...and had toric lenses...I now see 20/20 for distance. It is a whole new world for me. VA paid for the procedure and the lenses as well. I will get scoped for reading glasses this week. I highly recommend that anyone who needs cataract surgery and who has a high degree of astigmatism to consider this procedure after consultation with your ophthalmic surgeon.

Everything that I have learned about cataract surgery and lenses I have learned from the great docs who post You Tube videos. Thank you!!!

Thank you doctor I'm about to go to the cataract surgery next month several years ago they can do what they can now and the new surgeries have dramatically gotten I just turned 66 and I can't wait to get my surgery done in Virginia and my Alfa insurance that I just got the first of the year is improving my life and I never did think I would ever be able to see any better because of my stigmatism so that's really good to know and I'm looking forward to get my cataract surgery done

You were the first doctor that explained EXACTLY what to expect to be done since I have an astigmatism AND cataracts!! You made me understand the procedure more clearly. I am scheduled for my cataract surgery in August for my left eye, and in 10 days I will have the right eye done. I am nervous, almost everyone that I have spoken to that already had cataract surgeries say "it's a piece of cake!" I am not sure if I accept their positive reviews. I have had several medical procedures done since 2018...Breast Cancer, Diverticulitis, robotic colon resection, then I had deep vein thrombosis and finally I tested positive for Covid by the end of 2020. This is why I am skeptical. Thank you for making such an informative video. It helped me understand a lot more. Thank you.

it is now Oct 2024. Thank you for the great video explaining Astigmatism and the Toric lenses to correct this in the eyes. I go in for my measurements in a couple of days and planning to go for the Mono Focal lenses for "Distance". I know I have an Astigmatism in the eyes and will discuss recommendations with the Doctor on best way to go. Insurance does not cover the high cost of Astigmatism lenses, so if I can do the same thing with additional glasses, I will go that route.
Thanks for the video. Take care.

Great video and thanks for the information.
My question is: is it worth to tackle the astigmatism and the catarract separately?
I.e. correct the astigmatism via LASIK and then use a non-toric IOL for the catarract? And not necessarily in that order?
I can see an obvious disadvantage to that: 2 surgeries on the eye as opposed to 1. But perhaps the end result can end up better?
I’m thinking that if the astigmatism is cleared out via LASIK, then perhaps better choices would open up for IOLs.

Thank you Doctor. Your video was so informative. I am very nearsighted and have astigmatism and will be undergoing cataract surgery soon. Explaining the prescription was especially helpful. It showed me that if I am a candidate a lens to correct the astigmatism although extra in cost would probably be the better choice for me. After the final measurements are completed I hope I will be a candidate for the toric lens.

Nice explanation, but some questions are still unanswered for many of us considering not just the cataract surgery, but also the use of the Toric lens. I have astigmatism and a cataract only in the right eye. So I will still need glasses for reading, plus to correct astigmatism in left eye. Plus the lens in my left eye is still good at 69 years old, so no idea if and when I might need surgery in left eye. Dr. says once you decide on Toric lens in first eye, same decision has to be made for second eye. Once you insert the Toric lens in the eye, is this a permanent fix for astigmatism? Or will the prescription for astigmatism change over time such as when you have not had this cataract surgery so eventually you end up where you started having to have glasses to correct the changes. In which case it would seem that using a toric lens would not be a permanent fix for the astigmatism. Thank You!!

I was just diagnosed with cataract in my right eye only however I have astigmatism in both eyes. My doctor recommended having both eyes done because in my case the astigmatism in both eyes are fairly significant. Having one eye corrected, I would have had to wear a corrective eye glass for one eye (by left) using glasses, even though the right eye would potentially see at almost 20/20 or 20/25 (there are no guarantees). Right now both my eyes are at a -700. My non cataract affected eye, the left has a severe astigmatism. Every case is different but my goal was to try to improve distance only as much as possible but I am ok with reading a reading glasses for up close tasks or reading (intermediate). Hope this helps and good luck!

I'm concerned about getting a Toric IOL. I heard cataract surgery can cause MORE astigmatism. So glasses or contacts would still be needed. It seems like it would be defeating the purpose. And wasting a lot of money. Although, the arms would keep the lens from disloging.
Just getting Toric contacts would be more efficient and cost effective. What's your input, please?

Is it better to ask for EDOF Toric lens or it’s better to have just Toric Monofocal? I need to be able to see piano notes well at the distance of 1-1.5 meters, distance and computer would be nice. And not compromise night vision and contrast. What do you think? I have a very severe astigmatism ..I am planning to have cataract surgery in Jan and was informed they could not correct my astigmatism completely due to it being so bad lol....they could reduce it and id still need correction (glasses) .... I am wondering if its beneficial for me to have them correct what they can, as I do suffer with distortion, especially when I'm super active..even driving at night. I just want to improve my vision and am willing to take any correction offered even if need glasses...I just want to be sure it will improve my vision if I'm paying 1700.00 and eye.... SO my question is id it a benefit to me to get the Toric leses even if it doesn't fully correct my astigmatism?? Id be so thankful for a reply here....or if anyone else has had this experience, they cld give me the pro's or cons :) Did you benefit from it?

Did you have a monofocal iol or a multifocal iol implant? From what I have read the problem is more severe with a multifocal lens. For many patients the symptoms improve over time. Unfortunately for some the improvements will only be slightly better where it will not make much of an impact on the quality of your vision. Give it some time and hopefully it’ll get better. There’s a lot of information on the internet including the public forums where people share their experiences with negative outcomes of the surgery such as yourself. As a last resort the lenses can be replaced, all other things being equal.

natural astigmatism is the addition of 2 causes ,one affecting the cornea and one other affecting the the lens .
if you replace the lens by a non toric artificial one ,like we do for everyone with no astigmatism, than after the operation your astigmatism due to the cornea will remain ….but if your lens is replaced by a toric artificial one than this toric lens will take care of the remaining astigmatism due to your cornea ,otherwise your cornea astigmatism will remain blurring your vision more than before .

If you value your close-in vision...i.e. seeing your watch, doing DIY work, seeing instruments or people inside your car, seeing your phone (texts, etc.)? Please DO NOT opt for the Toric Lens. Since October 2023 my Toric Lens from Johnson & Johnson has left me CRIPPLED. Yes...I can read a license plate at 2-blocks, However, this morning I fell down 8 concrete stairs, head-first, because I no longer have depth perception OR balance. I was shamed into paying $1700 extra for the Toric Lens with the medical staff making me feel like a "cheapskate" for not choosing the so- called "premium lens." The worst medical decision of my life.

    • @desertvisioncenter
      @desertvisioncenter  11 місяців тому

The toric lens is monofocal. This means that the best focus is only optimized at a single distance target. The toric lens can either work for near vision or far vision, but not both.
If your goal was to read a book, read your phone and see license plates at a distance, a better choice may have been a multi focal lens such as panoptix.
In our office, we always review the pros and cons of every lens choice whether it is a basic lens, a toric lens or an extended depth of field lens. We make sure our patients that choose a basic lens know that they will not have their astigmatism corrected, patients that choose a toric lens know that they are only given one distance target, and patients that choose a multi focal or extended range lens implant have better range of vision.
You can always call our office for a second opinion - it may not be too late to do a lens exchange to change your toric lens for another choice, especially if your surgery was recent (within the past 2 to 4 weeks).
