Sand between coats. That's the right way. Good job. Not many people do that. I go finer every time. That's just me. Bit everyone trips out how smooth it feels. Smack smack! Nice.good build.
maybe because he didn't explain anything? I have these plans and the sizing is ridiculous. The cut list is sad, wanting you to buy 1x2's and Box stores don't sell 1 1/2 thick lumber, although it appears he glued a couple pieces of 1x2 together, who knows we just got to watch him put a chair together like magic. Gluing 2 pieces together is going to be way to much added cost.. Maybe I will head to local lumber mill and try to find some 7/4 lumber, otherwise the plans says to plane the 2" thick stuff done. Not going to buy a $400 planer to make a chair and if I had known this, I wouldn't have wasted my money
Nice job, looks really good. I’m glad I watched your build I was shopping for 2” cedar and it’s really expensive, but laminating 1” together for the thicker pieces is a great solution, at least for me. Thanks.
Nice build! Goes to show how much work i have ahead of me for my adirondack chair build. If you've ever been on How to With Doc's lawn care channel, he has the same music as this video.
Tolle Arbeit, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, der Stuhl sieht super aus. Daumen nach unten geben wohl nur Leute, die selber nichts zu Stande bringen, oder an allem etwas zu kritisieren haben.
I built the small table first as a "warm-up". OMG the wood prep took forever :-(. I am NOT looking forward to staining, waiting, sanding, re-staining EVERY one of these pieces 3 times! It looks amazing when done - but oh that prep!
Most do one coat all round, assemble and then do second and third. Others build first and disassemble for first coat. ! am cheating a bit by just coating only where any two pieces join together, this is probably only possible because I'm using a Tung oil, not varnish or stain. After assembly the chair will get 2 more coats.
Nice. Starting my build next week. Our local Home Depot doesn't carry dimensional cedar. They have cedar shingles and fence pickets. It looks like I can order rough sawn cedar 2x4's - but I hate to trust Home deport lumber sight unseen.....
@@MichaelGallinger Thanks for the reply. Im still waiting to get my plans (they are in the mail)- I wish you could download the cut list right away- it'd give me a better idea on what sizes Ill need. The pickets in my store are 5/8 x 6 x 72. I believe the cut list calls for 2x8 pieces as well (armrests?). Did you edge join the pickets to make those or size them down a bit?
btw- found rough-cut cedar at Lowes. Luckily I have a planer- so I was able to get my lumber made WAY cheaper than the local specialty lumber place quoted me for dimensional cedar.
Hi Mike, great looking chair by the way and outstanding craftsmanship. I'm interested in knowing what type of wood you used in your build. Thanks for sharing!
Great video, I gotten all the planing, routing, sanding & 3 coats of spar urethane done. Now, I am ready to assemble. What size were your spacers for the back slacks and seat slacks?? Thanks.
Hi Michael, great video, commentary would have been better than music mate, one question, I live in England so our choices of wood can be a bit limited due to cost. Oak is very expensive,. which wood are you using in the project. Thanks for posting, Garry from the UK
garry smythe Hi Garry, I used cedar, 1inch thick and doubled up on supports and armrests. Unnecessary I suppose but I wanted a sturdy chair for years of use.
Nice job on the build and on the video Michael. I received the Rockler plans today & I'm about to start on it. What kind of wood did you use on this chair?
shortirons Thanks! I used cedar from Home Depot. I laminated two pieces together for all supports and armrests, single pieces for back and seat strips. I don’t think it was absolutely necessary but I wanted it to be strong.
Question about cutting the back slats ... Did you use a jig saw to rip the 31" long lengths, or did you use some other saw? They're tapered, and I'm not sure how to make this cut accurately. I only have a jig saw and circular saw. Thanks so much!
This is the most complex thing I have ever built. Mistakes aplenty were made but most people would not notice. I made it from 5/4 deck boards for those that might want to go cheap.
Maybe if you are building a trophy for a museum. It’s an Adarondack chair for outside. Will get wet and abused. I glued mine as well as screwing it together. Also extended legs 4” in front and made 5” legs for back so old people(me) can get in and out of it.
Nice work. I built a couple of these using the same pattern. I used 2x wood for the bottom supports and arms. I noticed you used 2 1x glued together. What kind of glue did you use and did you have any issues with the screws going into the joints? Thanks.
I just completed this same chair. I could not find anything on spacing the seat slats in the plans so I eyeballed it. Did you use 1/4 inch spacing? What wood did you use?
Great work! After researching, I'm going to use these plans as well. What do you think of using pocket holes to hide the screws for everything except the slats?
Great Video Michael, thanks. I have my plans and can't wait to get started. What kind of screws did you end up using? I forgot to order them when I got the templates.
Great! Helped a lot! I am new at wood working and trying to build this chair but don’t understand how to get the shop drawings of the arm rest brackets to scale from the shop drawings? Can you give me some advice? Thank You
Not sure if this is helpful to you but Rockler sells the templates in either cardboard or 1/4” MDF versions. I think that’s probably what most people use.
Hi Michael, I am getting ready to put the urethane finish on and was curious what # grit sandpaper did you use between coats? Thanks for the video it has helped me along the way, almost one down and three to go!
Hello, good morning, I really enjoyed your chair. I would like to make one for myself. You would have the measures to send me and if possible in PDF, I am very grateful. Thank you
I just got the Rockler plans and am going to give this a try. Two questions Michael. 1) Your opinion of using 3/4 cedar fencing for the entire project as opposed to some 1 inch components and 2) I’d like to increase the front seat height 2 inches to make the chair more accessible for a tall person. How do I figure out how much to extend the sides to keep the seat angle the same? Thanks!
David Crockett, Those are great questions you might want to ask April Wilkinson who now supplies the templates for Rockler. She would be able to help you. Just Google her to get in touch with her about it.
I'm in the process of building these same chairs (2)...now about 75% complete. I'm in that work-intensive routing & sanding phase. Wow! A lot more prep work than I had originally anticipated. How accurate were the sizes on the Rockler plans? Did you have to alter any dimensions? I'm hopefully confident they are accurate. What stain did you use on the chairs? Hope to have mine completed in the next couple of weeks! Thanks for posting this!!!!!
RHI Hodag The plans were pretty accurate. I don’t recall having to alter anything. I didn’t stain it, I just used a couple coats of Helmsman Spar Urethane. I doubled up on everything (glued two pieces of 1 inch cedar together) (I think it was 1 inch) except for the back and seat slats. I love the chair! Good luck 👍
Thanks! I was able to get the properly dimensioned lumber, just had to plane it down to the final thickness. I look forward to finishing them up. Still sanding..... Thanks Mike!

videoscrapheap
Yes I thought about doing that. It would be easier for future chairs!
