- Summer 2021 is shaping up to be one of the hottest in history, as the effects of climate change are becoming ever clearer. Naturally, that’s led to an increase in global demand for air conditioning, which itself is a major contributor to global warming. It’s a vicious cycle, but there are a number of companies working to make heating and cooling more energy efficient, and get buildings off of fossil fuels for good.

How Air Conditioning Is Warming The World
The 116 degree heat DID NOT MELT the power cables. That is a LIE. The plastic sheathing on the power cables is rated at above 350 degrees. The only reason that one spot that is shown melted is because of a resistive connection fault that caused the WIRE to heat up and thus melt the plastic sheathing. What a load of NONSENSE this video contains!
It's just the leftist climate change BS the news has gone too.
THANK YOU... I didn't even know anything about this situation, but I knew 116 is nowhere near enough heat to melt the insulation on those cables
It's all fake. The chloro-flourocarbons was a massive sting against the public. The real reason was a patent was expiring and China were going to manufacture it. It is IMPOSSIBLE for chloro-flourocarbons to get into the upper atmosphere unless actively released up there.

With demand comes supply
Our cities have so many usable surfaces it’s only common sense to totally revise how we design them in the future and revise current structures.
We’re forced to buy the portable ones.. Much more expensive.
There was recently a court case in Finland that resulted in a verdict: if it's technically possible, condominiums must allow the installation of cooling heat pumps. (Due to central heating the heating option isn't necessary anyway.)
The units can be installed if the apartment/condo has a balcony, and the outer unit would be placed there so it can be maintained.
Condo owners must request permission for the installation, and there are already many that have been approved, already before the court case.

AC does not only uses coal. It uses whatever powers your grid.
The title is misleading. The problem isnt the ac unit. Problem is whatever is used to produce electricity.
Yup. Solving clean electricity unlocks a lot of possibilities. Refrigerants are a concern though
Funny because this is the same electricity powering those “green” electric cars 😂
It also helps to reduce energy use of appliances. AC use at least 4 times more energy then heat pumps. This can also be an incentive to upgrade for those who like to safe money.
@@kaigogolin515 I'm not talking about that part.
If we plant 3-4 trees near every building, we can significantly lower the heat.

@Faux Que no we can't plant trillions of tress, instead we can switch to more greener energy
@@hj-bf1os we can do both.
@Faux Que yes its is simpler to switch green then planting trillions trees. It takes 4800 tress for 1 car wirh span of 20years. So it is easy to switch 1 car instead of planting 4800 trees per car.

@Jack Strawb 9:13 onwards is about retrofitting and insulation.
actually a company is inventing a climate friendly Air conditioning unit, though it will take a few years.
If cooling homes is heating up outside too much, why don't we just turn the window units around and cool off outside?
And live outside?
@@dollartreeshark6786 well it’s going to be hot inside.
This guy gets it.
That's what we call a heat pump. AC simply pumps the heat outside, while reversing it pumps the heat inside. Interestingly it doesn't cost that much to reverse an air conditioner, and yet they charge so much to add a "heat pump".
Anyway all AC's do is to move heat from one place to another. Same with your refrigerator, it moves the heat from inside the refrigerator to outside of it, so all that heat is pushed into your house. Although it isn't exactly a lot of space.
We do in winter
Says the journalist in a nice comfortable air conditioned office.

Heat pumps are nothing new. They are nearly everywhere in Japan and other countries in the region. These are a necessity because power costs more there.
Cool, didn’t know! Will have to look into this more.
What happens when there's a power outrage?
@@uioplkhj If running a standard A/C plant, its the same, loss of A/C. If you have natural gas as an energy source, you would lose heating when the electric pumps stop circulating heated water that supply base board or old radiator systems due to loss of power.
We’ve had them in America and they don’t work!
@@dougeing6521 That's news to me. I had one for 3 years in Japan and it worked very well. They do lose their efficiency advantage when temperatures drop below 32 F. So they are not optimal in extremely cold weather, but in southern states, they would work well as they share a similar climate with Japan.
This is great ideas but we all know people don’t like to spend the money. Newer company’s can benefit from this however existing ac owners is not about to pay to change they whole systems.
Unless if and when their AC breaks and there’s law to input these new clean energy heat pumps replacing the older models…or if the demand goes up just enough to the point the of the existing manufacturers will also adopt this tech

Who buys the prodocts of 'the global industries'? Aliens?
If we're going to rely solely on electricity for absolutely everything from transportation to HVAC, it's going to take a miracle to come up with a clean and reliable system to satisfy that increased demand. I'm all for wind and solar but I can't imagine that will be nearly enough
Nuclear
I've seen the rough numbers, and it should be enough on average - but only if you pair it with either demand management or a breakthrough in storage.
@@ronaldlindeman6136 will it be enough in the future when everyone is driving electric cars and using electric heat and air conditioning? That's my main point/concern. Also will it be reliable in extreme climates? Will fossil fuels still be there to use in an emergency?
@@1mlb704 Yeah. Just build more. The entire planet's electricity use can be generated with just solar panels covering the state of New Mexico. Thats alot of land, but divide it across the world, on rooftops or in solar farms, plus nuclear, hydro-electric dams, and wind farms (on land and in the ocean). Its actually not that much land.
Heat pumps (basically AC running in reverse) are actually so efficient that its actually more efficient to burn natural gas in a power plant and send the power hundreds or thousands of miles to your house to run a heat pump, than it is to burn the natural gas in your home for warmth.
Future increases in AC and heating will also be slightly offset by better modern insulation. Retrofitting old buildings with better insulation will be important.
Solar is most efficient on a home or buildings roof or glass panels. Solar farms are highly inefficient on a energy created for space used basis

The HVAC industry itself is always evolving and getting better and more efficient. Whether that be with units themselves or controls working to maximize efficiently and comfortability.
Videos like this fail to recognize tyat without serious dedication to new generation capacity our grid will become overwhelmed as we electrify
We in NL have a different problem. New solar installations or heat pumps won't be connected to the grid in certain big cities (like Amsterdam) and rural areas (farmers with 500 panels on the roof). Why, because of a lack of transportation capacity. They can't transport the generated energy to users.
The grid management companies (semi-goverment) are whining on the news every week now that they need to invest in extra capacity. They want money from the government.
There's also a stupid law that forbids investing in capacity that's not needed within 2-3 years. At the same time the government wants to be fully electric in 10 to 30 years. Both cars and houses. That means 3 or 4 times the current grid capacity.
Basically every house owner has to spend between 20k and 50k up front for more insulation and replacing most of the heating system from gas to heat pumps. Gas is already forbidden in new construction. They want to shut down some gas lines as early as 2030. New ICE vehicles will also be forbidden to be sold by 2030 and completely illegal by 2050.
My dad curses them almost weekly for this (daily for covid decisions) and says they won't force him. The insanity is that Germany subsidizes people going from coal to gas.

Maybe the first place to remove air conditioning would be from all goverment buldings so the politically correct people have to suffer the way they want normal American citizens have to
This doesn't help when you're low income. I'm on SSI, so I'm stuck with regular window air conditioning and electric space heaters. I can't even find window heat pumps anymore. They're only making them for split systems.
flashback of john kerry flying at 35,000 feet telling people not to use air conditioning
Says "We need to use less energy". Then drives off in a gas-guzzling truck twice the size of an european car
I like the idea of the video, but it lacks understanding of the sector. Their is no mention of ASHRAE, building codes, thermal energy storage, free cooling, etc etc. We want to have all the subjects treated like a shine unicorn start-up and air conditioning is a more than 100 year old industry

Well Doing molten salt nuclear reactor certainly will be more green than what we have now.
Insulation, especially the windows. Then let not turn it to “freezing”. Every time I got to a restaurant or store in the summer I have to bring a light jacket, because it is so much cooler than the outside.

Remember, in 2000, when they said climate change would cause a one foot rise in sea levels by 2018? They also said we'd be nearly out of fossil fuels by the same year.
Once a week i turn the ac on and leave the window open to help cool the outside.
My HOA refuses to allow me to put on a lighter color shingle or to whitewash the dark red brick. I have added some stealth features such as triple insulating my windows and storm door. Nothing will change until people make it a priority.
why are all HOA in the US so bad?
HOA limits your choices. Never buy HOA house.
What most people don't realize is that when you "heat a building" 1btu=1btu, when you use "refrigeration (A/C)" it is -1btu=2/3btu (so you create 3btu's of heat for every 1btu of heat removed from the building). It works the same in vehicles and everything else using refrigeration.
This is true for every type of refrigeration, from your vehicle, to your fridge/freezer and to the commercial units used to cool fruits/vegetables/frozen goods in the supermarket, to the massive units used to freeze the covid vaccines.
And it doesn't matter what you use to generate the power to remove the btu's, the generation and use of electricity generates heat in the same manner. And often at the same rate.
This climate change/global warming conversation is tiresome. I remember being told the world was goin to ice over when I get older...well 30 yrs later and welp🤷♂️
And what about all that acid rain from the same time period.
They are not the same thing
I don't understand why guys like you refuse to acknowledge this fact, even I've been keeping temperature records since 2016 of my local area and found that the number of days with high temperature is increasing in these years.
@@series1054 because guys like you think you can just comprise all these numbers and that makes things factual. It’s NOT! God has it in control. Not some legislative branch of big government. The fact is all they want to do is destroy our economy and put money in their pockets. It’s never been about the earth or the environment. Just their pockets and how fat they can make them. But you’re too stupid to see that.
They don’t address apartments where tenants may have to move year to year
Maybe there should be a policy where landlords have to pay for energy to incentivize them to change. I'd love a heat pump in my apartment but I don't want to buy one because I'm not sure how long I'm staying here.
This is why you want solar panel. I got my central air system few years ago then right after that I got my solar panels since I knew without solar panels I would have paid thru the nose for electricity.
I don't get it. We have these AC units in our apartment 10 years ago. This video made it sound like there's something innovative here.
Need urban Forester to get proper trees and shrubs that act like nature's air conditioner units.
Next vid will be how does we know it's Day time or night time? You will wanna stay tuned for this
2:41 adding myself to the dislikes. though China uses plenty of coal power, renewables and dams provide a significant portion. AC cooling in China mostly required during the day where most renewable energy is produced
What about geothermal? There’s a huge push for essentially pulling air from tubes underground that stay at a constant temp year round and transfer that indoors.
I guess we can agree.. regulation won’t solve our problems, innovation will. God bless capitalism!
I actually honestly never use an air conditioner and I'm in my 30's. I always just use a fan and I never sweat at all when I have a single fan on me. Whatsoever. It gets in the 90's here. I sweat a lot when I'm outside but not at all inside. My electric bill is $40 in the summer. I'm single. My electric bill is $65 in the winter. I keep my heat at 60° Because I always thought when the January high is 60 it felt warm so that's what I always set my heat too. I've never had a TV any bigger than a medium sized tv because that's the biggest tv I ever wanted. I don't have a whole lot. I think we all need to work on energy conservation. That's the key.
I’d expect to stay single if you aren’t using AC
@@nocodeguitar well, it's true that I always just have one fan on and on me and I never sweat at all when I'm inside, outside it's understandabley a different story. You should try it sometime.
@Uncle Thomas yeah I live in Ohio but I already said it's in the 90's. What do you mean by virtue signalling is never a good look? What does that even mean? I thought everything I said was a good thing anyway. I guess how hot it is has a lot to do with humidity. It rains a lot in Ohio at least now so I would say it's humid at least to me.
@Uncle Thomas Guess what, everything doesn't have to be political. Is it so hard for you to imagine this is just a regular dude speaking candidly about his own personal experience?
Heat pumps lose a lot of efficiency once temperature drops below 40F (4C). Most places easily get this cold during the year. Also as a Texan who lost power for a week this year when temps hit 4F (-16C) I am extremely thankful for my natural gas that kept flowing. Having redundant energy sources is extremely important especially with this extreme weather we are getting due to climate change.
in many cities that 'heat pump'/ac condenser unit would be stolen in about 5 minutes on the ground like that 5:08
Solar, wind and hydro has to be our future and it needs to happen fast.

Is this 1974 because I remember a show like this back then.
What's changed?
Notice they aren't mentioning how well these things work. I guarantee you regular AC units make you house way cooler than these things, and that is ALL I care about.
They're exactly the same as AC
Finally someone speaking about it. It's been years since I have been concerned and been pointing to this issue. Specially during the lockdowns, when most of the offices were closed and vehicles use was banned (a sharp decline in heavy AC use as compared to personal use at home) the overall temperature came down a lot, even in the hottest summer months of May/ June in India. To a point that most of us didn't need ACs during peak summers. It is a serious issue.
Also, it makes us used to or conditioned to being in more colder temp, hence making us feel hotter even in the slightest of increasing/ warm temperature.
All this new "high efficiency" equipment they are talking about costs an order of magnitude more than conventional "inefficient" air conditioning - as they mentioned several times.
...but what they DIDN'T mention was the cost of upkeep, repair, and downtime.
Any energy savings you get with high end equipment goes RIGHT back out the door as soon as it has a malfunction.
EXPENSIVE boards, sensors, drives, and motor assemblies that can take WEEKS to order and replace - again, not even mentioning the additional hours of labor costs for troubleshooting and being on hold with technical support.
Conventional units can usually be repaired SAME DAY with parts on a technician's truck or local supplier.
I do HVAC and have a conventional split system in my house for EXACTLY that reason.
A very important facet is overlooked - air filtration. You can have the most efficient air conditioning machinery but if you replace your air filter with one that has very high resistance, you may end up using even more electricity.
as PE in the HVAC world would LOVE to have an intelligent conversation with the CNBC of how a HP is not the end all and be all that they are offering up. Crazy idea and let the engineers actually comment on this as opposed to the fear mongering......SMH
I was a green person, I dont use AC at all for the past few years, but nowadays the world has changed, sometimes the temperature is so high that I honestly think I might die if I dont use my AC, Im sorry, but I have to use it, just try my best to use it only when I cant take it anymore.
You’re basically telling us the real issue. Overpopulation and over consumption. People talk like maintaining the population or even reducing birth rate is evil but it’s really the only solution. Otherwise we have to move to another planet.
@@timedone8502 I think reducing the population is a popular agenda among youths. it's good for the planet too but it technically won't be good for the economy because of reduction in future tax payers.

yeah it's got to be my air conditioning, not the huge wildfires and the cutting down of all the trees
It’s a bitter pill to swallow but all of us are responsible for climate change.
I know I haven’t helped. I like big, fast cars and I love my coal fired furnace. But maybe I need to modify the way I do things to help the planet and every one on it.
Buckle up people, we’re all dying here either way.
Please also write the Celsius degrees in parentheses if you already took the time to write the °F.

Solarpanels pair well with air conditioners because they both scale with sunlight, the more sun the hotter the more AC use but you also get more energy from the panels, not to mention they are green. But the best part is that your AC will still have power when the entire city blackouts from too many AC being on at the same time.
But doesn't it still harm the planet by pumping out heat?
God, I wish I wasn't born in this timeline as an invasive species to Earth...
@@cadethumann8605 The planet takes no harm from that. It can however locally make an already unbearably hot city a degree or two warmer if everybody use them at once.
@@Alfaomegabravo Forgive me, sir/miss. Sometimes (or a lot of times), I go through existential dread. I wonder about what damage is my mere existence doing, what can I do, will my lifespan end before the planet becomes hellish, will we come up with clean tech, will the Earth heal, and so much more.
At the very least, I hope that I won't be around when things get ugly.

A/C doesn’t make heat. It just moves it from one place to another.
It does move heat energy from one element to another, but uses electric & mechanical (motor) energy in the process, and that is the one that creates new heat.
But it has to do work to move that heat. It’s like moving coal to your basement - nothing comes for free and nothing is 100% efficient.
The phrase "warming the world" here refers to the greenhouse emissions from the electricity usage and refrigerant leakage.
I do repairs in hundred of rentals and landlords won’t replace anything that can be patched together because it cost them ROI. I was surprised on a triplex they wanted a dripping hot water faucet fixed ASAP. When I asked the landlord I found out the gas bill is included in the rent and each drip was costing him money. How is that you ask? There is one 40 gallon water heater for all three apartments. Unless you can Incentivize landlords to do upgrades the most inefficient units will remain in use. Before you judge too harshly, ask yourself, if your boss came in and ask you to take a pay cut so he could do upgrades would you be OK with that? I work for myself and if I encounter extra expenses I don’t absorb them I pass them on to the customer.
