  • Beijing criticized the White House’s move to increase US tariffs on a wide range of Chinese imports, vowing to take its own action, without giving specifics. “China will take resolute measures to safeguard its own rights and interests,” the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement. Stephen Engle reports on Bloomberg Television.

It doesn't matter. The money from the tariff will be used to lower the cost of American producers. So American products will be more affordable relative to Chinese products. The Chinese can subsidize their producers as much as they want. Chinese money will be used to subsidize American production.

China products like these electric vehicles are heavily subsidized in China. That’s why they’re able to sell them so cheap. Add to that the artificial devaluation of their currency and you have the cheap vehicles that’s been in the news lately. They’re not playing fair. Then again it’s China so we’re not surprised.

The government gets to collect increased tariffs, while people have to pay higher prices for goods regardless of whether they're made in the US or China. Lots of things we are using are not even produced here. If they intend to force Americans to by American-made goods, they better have domestic alternatives. Otherwise, people are paying higher prices for no reasons.

    • @KingOfNaraka

@itsallminor6133 Manufacturing moved out of China doesn't solve the problems the Biden tariffs trying to address, which is to create domestic manufacturing jobs here in the States. In the end they will have to raise tariffs on all cheap goods regardless of where they are imported from if they want to force Americans to consider buying American-made goods due to price parity.

The tariff means that now other countries will get investment and can develop alternative production facilities without Chinese influence. It's better for the US to have multiple suppliers. The tariff is the first step to remove the lock China has on production. Other countries should welcome this and take advantage to develop their own production facilities. We all know the reasons why China wants to maintain the monopoly on production, and we shouldn't let them. One thing is clear the US should develop proper vetting procedures and country of origin checks to make sure China doesn't slip in unnoticed.

Not mentioned: the tariff on Chinese made steel increased to 25%. If you don’t know, there are basically only two countries that make almost all the steel in the world: China and India. China produces so much steel, it produces as much as much as the top nine countries in the world, in terms of production, including India. India produces almost all the rest of the steel in the world. This tariff is going to force India’s steel to be significantly more price competitive. This could have very significant changes for the steel industry in India and the manufacturing industry in America.
