Unlike cars neither turn well, neither can slow down quickly enough, neither is limited physically from moving anywhere (cars usually have to stick to roads), etc.
There's a Lotta factors that play into it. Either people not playing attention, waves/currents pushing them together. Plus boats are just super fucing massive that making turns quickly is almost impossible. Takes a Lotta room.

But for real, collisions in congested shipping lanes passing through some high traffick straight or canal ok I get it, but doing 4 knots to nowhere in the open waters of the bering sea its ridiculous. Currents ride through the water. Once you're caught ina. Current it takes a distance to maneuver similar to a train having to break super early. Hence why trains crash into something right infront of the tracks. Imagine the amount of force and weight pushing through.
Boats are very close together fishing. And there is alot of ships in the ocean. It isnt as open as you think. Look in the background of this show at night youll see tons of lights. These boats find the crab and then criss cross eachothers pot lines like a giant grid

They were usually too distracted talking on a cell phone to notice my truck, trailer, and the fluorescent orange TLB… I’m sure A little spray paint would fix my bumper, but there’s no need totaling their vehicle and possibly hurting someone. Navigation and Rules of the Road is something all ship Captains must know. Rule #15 applies for crossing situations and with only 10 seconds of film to see what happened, it looks like in this situation Keith should be the "Give Way" vessel and have allowed the other vessel to pass ahead. Or Keith could have altered his and turned to Starboard to pass on the rear. As for people saying "a whole ocean and they still hit?" ....these situations are very common. Hence, the need for the Rules of the Road so everyone can safely navigate the waters.

I work on towboats, had to learn rules of the road international and inland. Keith being the give way vessel is like saying youre at fault because someone crossed right in front of you on the road last sec and claiming that you should have slowed down, wrong. Of course at all cost avoid any type of accident but keith 100% did not have to slow down.

I'm glad the other captain was staying calm despite this dude losing his head (not even knowing the situation on his boat). Keith had every right to freak out the way he did. The captain of the smaller boat pulled right out in front of him, and he didn't have enough time to stop.
A collision could easily turn deadly in the open sea. Keith yelling is absolutely understandable. He and the rest of the crew could die. The biggest mistake was the blue boat crossed the bow of the wizard. No way Keith could make the turn right away especially a big boat. It doesn't react as fast.

When a collision is imminent no matter who has right of way, it is the job of the captain to do whatever he can to keep a collision from happening. So if you are in the wheel house and know another vessel is off your starboard bow why did you not making every necessary action to avoid contact?
The way he clicked into calm damage control mode speaks to his abilities as a captain. No wonder the Wizard is one of the most successful boats out there.

Well I would of been surprised if it had done a lot of damage it was built in the 2 world war as a workhorse plus it is a New Yorker so it is probably the strongest boat in the whole crabbing fleet 💪 still.
Her hull is quite a bit thicker than the average F/V and she's a heavy beast of a ship for her size. Keith is very likely aware of that and has even said in the past how he's afraid of colliding with another boat in the Wizard. She's tough as hell but at the price of not being as agile as other boats.

@@jamiehudson4894 Basically as the steel in an enclosed space oxidizes (rusts) it pulls oxygen out of the air. If you open that space up and go into it you can quickly become hypoxic and die, even if the hatch has been open a while.
The Wizard was the standdown vessel and you should turn hard to starboard and passed the other vessel the stern of the other vessel. There is a simple saying going green green, red to red perfectly safe to go ahead, but we do prefer red to red.there’s a few things considerations first there was plenty of time to take advise if action, second the was to use every opportunity to communicate with the other vessel by radio or by sound signals or light signals which aren’t as effective during the day. This seems to be very simple. I’ve set more gear here and you get out of my way but it doesn’t work like that he’s not trawling which makes turning much harder he’s potting he could have just let go his hauling line. More risky manoeuvre, continue hauling and take the pot with you, but that could put the pot in the prop.

In a crossing situation, if you see the other vessel’s port side red light, “red means stop” Keith should have been the one going full astern or hard to starboard, that other boat technically had right of way. Both boats same size, neither restricted in ability to maneuver or constrained by draft. Keith’s at fault and thinks he can yell it away on the radio to make it seem like the other boat was at fault. What a clown

A little back story they were doing a transfer of bait I believe the other boat said he was going to go in front and circle around Keith acknowledged this and a combination of the other boat circling sharply and Keith starting to move forward resulted in this.
I've seen it more than once these fishermen crack open a sealed tank and climb right in, do they have a tester? Do they realize tanks can be completely deprived of oxygen? People die this way too.

They were usually too distracted talking on a cell phone to notice my truck, trailer, and the fluorescent orange TLB… I’m sure A little spray paint would fix my bumper, but there’s no need totaling their vehicle and possibly hurting someone. Navigation and Rules of the Road is something all ship Captains must know. Rule #15 applies for crossing situations and with only 10 seconds of film to see what happened, it looks like in this situation Keith should be the "Give Way" vessel and have allowed the other vessel to pass ahead. Or Keith could have altered his and turned to Starboard to pass on the rear.
As for people saying "a whole ocean and they still hit?" ....these situations are very common. Hence, the need for the Rules of the Road so everyone can safely navigate the waters.

I work on towboats, had to learn rules of the road international and inland. Keith being the give way vessel is like saying youre at fault because someone crossed right in front of you on the road last sec and claiming that you should have slowed down, wrong. Of course at all cost avoid any type of accident but keith 100% did not have to slow down.

The other captain was too busy reading a magazine as he moved in front of a fishing boat who had no engines working.
Keith had every right to freak out the way he did. The captain of the smaller boat pulled right out in front of him, and he didn't have enough time to stop.
A collision could easily turn deadly in the open sea. Keith yelling is absolutely understandable. He and the rest of the crew could die. The biggest mistake was the blue boat crossed the bow of the wizard. No way Keith could make the turn right away especially a big boat. It doesn't react as fast.

For those wondering how ships collide in the open ocean: The vessel on the starboard side of the Wizard was carrying the camera crew. To get a better shot, they decided to move to the bow side of the Wizard. Unfortunately, a coincidental power loss occurred, and boom-the Wizard rammed into the camera crew's ship.

If anyone is wondering, the boat that was rammed was the camera crew who wanted to get a shot of the wizard, but they unfortunately suffered a electrical malfunction that didn’t let them back up in time.
One of the basic laws of physics is that two solid objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time.
Matter attracts matter. Lol.
Keith was wrong... When two boats have the same priority of right of way based on their classification, the determining factors become position and direction of travel.
To determine the position of another vessel relative to your own, you must know the different “sectors” of your vessel, i.e., starboard, port and stern. Once you identify where another boat is relative to your own, you’ll know who has the right of way.
Using the following simple rules, you’ll have a good grasp on how to behave around other powerboats:
1. If another vessel is approaching you from the port - or left - side of your boat, you have the right of way and should maintain your speed and direction.
2. If a vessel is aiming to cross your path and they’re on your starboard - or right - side, they have the right of way. Alter your course so that you will pass them at a safe distance and in a way that is apparent to the other skipper.
I think at this point, when the title is the wizard hits ANOTHER boat I think we found the problem.

Well I would of been surprised if it had done a lot of damage it was built in the 2 world war as a workhorse plus it is a New Yorker so it is probably the strongest boat in the whole crabbing fleet 💪 still.
Her hull is quite a bit thicker than the average F/V and she's a heavy beast of a ship for her size. Keith is very likely aware of that and has even said in the past how he's afraid of colliding with another boat in the Wizard. She's tough as hell but at the price of not being as agile as other boats.

The Wizard was the standdown vessel and you should turn hard to starboard and passed the other vessel the stern of the other vessel. There is a simple saying going green green, red to red perfectly safe to go ahead, but we do prefer red to red.there’s a few things considerations first there was plenty of time to take advise if action, second the was to use every opportunity to communicate with the other vessel by radio or by sound signals or light signals which aren’t as effective during the day. This seems to be very simple. I’ve set more gear here and you get out of my way but it doesn’t work like that he’s not trawling which makes turning much harder he’s potting he could have just let go his hauling line. More risky manoeuvre, continue hauling and take the pot with you, but that could put the pot in the prop.
Trying to kick it back into reverse (after the fact) they tried cutting off the other boat, which is beyond stupid. If the captain of the smaller blue vessel doesn't know how to steer his own boat, maybe he should stick to bumper cars at the carnival

In a crossing situation, if you see the other vessel’s port side red light, “red means stop” Keith should have been the one going full astern or hard to starboard, that other boat technically had right of way. I've seen it more than once these fishermen crack open a sealed tank and climb right in, do they have a tester? Do they realize tanks can be completely deprived of oxygen? People die this way too.

When two power-driven vessels are crossing so as to involve risk of collision, the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep out of the way and shall, if the circumstances of the case admit, avoid crossing ahead of the other vessel. Guess the captain failed that part of the exam.
Agreed, that would be the rule unless they claim they were fishing maybe. Also he could have gone hard to port and lessened the impact or even avoided it, instead he just raged on vhf. Very poor and there is no way he is blameless in this.
@@Depaor1970 if fishing he’d have to have lines or nets out again per the international rules of the road and inland as well. Since that isn’t how you crab he wouldn’t be able to claim fishing status. Wonder where he took his test for his masters license.
