7:09 im not surprised. After my wife and i both broke our phones a few years back i dug around and bought two Armor 3WT models (with the built in walkie talkie as they use the same frequencies as the radio in my truck that im licensed to use. Those phones survived years of literal abuse. Her was retired for an internal firmware issue but mine worked right until last month when i forgot it on my bumper and drove off. It fell off and got run over several times before i found it. I have a feeling its repairable (the magic smoke didnt get out of its amazingly huge battery) but its also so old i havent even bothered looking for parts. Our current phones are iPhones because i use them to record for my main channel, but when i need a new phone, im going back to the UleFone Armor series.
My first cell phone was the Radio Shack CT201 transportable, with a shoulder strap and battery pack, as well as a mounting system In my 1985 K5 Blazer. I received a phone call from my carrier's tech people one day inquiring about my setup because I was causing issues with their tower. Turns out, using a 5dB antenna on the Blazer made my signal too strong. I was asked to change it out to a 3dB antenna and it solved the issue. Amazing to see where they have come since then.
7:40 but plastic transfers all the impact onto the internals that are much more expensive or even impossible to fix sometimes, compared to glass that can be replaced after absorbing the shock
Wish there was a way you could see this but you’re awesome. It means a lot to me what you’re doing with the wheelchairs. I’ve had spina bifida all my life and have to deal with a cheap 55 pound wheelchair and it’s not fun. What makes it even worse is when insurance spits in my face for requesting a lighter wheelchair, what they don’t realize is that it’s HARD to put a wheelchair that heavy in and out of a car while not being able to afford the ultra light ones
Hey Zack, I’ve really enjoyed every one of your videos this year, and I feel like I’ve been a part of every project you’ve worked on. My favorite was the Africa wheelchair factory-it’s just amazing to see how organized they were. The whole project was so inspiring from start to finish.

As he said, it's still a glass sandwich. The screen may scratch at a level 7 with deeper grooves at a level 8, but glass is still glass and glass breaks. When that back glass shatters you'll know that a plastic back is still more durable.
keep up the fun vids. glad you keep pushing the idea of repairability, durability, along with usability... looking forward to more advancements in your company. cheers.
You aren't supposed to replace the battery or screen (there is a warning label) and they do not sell replacement parts. The only thing repairable about it is that you can change the back.
happy (nearly) new year zack!! also did you hear about the anti-reflective coating on the s24 ultra peeling off causing weird lines? i'd love to know what you think about it
fun fact: Jerry give HMD Skyline the most repairable smartphone award 👍 while Mrwhosetheboss gave it the 2024 Wooden Spoon Award (worst phone of the year)!!!
I mean repairable isn’t indicative of great. While the HMD Skyline is repairable, the lack of software support (2 years I think) and locked bootloader makes it anti-consumer in the software sense. In the world where people are using their phones for 4-5 years on average, that isn’t a great deal to spend $500 on.
In my opinion, the most durable should go to the S24 Ultra. The first smartphone with little scratches at 7 with deeper at 8. It's the first smartphone I just keep it in my pocket without any case or screen protector (for the first time) and it looks just perfect. It's my work phone so I have it all the time near me, and I'm just impressed how good the back glass durability and the front screen is better than the previous gens. My Fold 5, that's my gaming device, is in my pocket mostly whenever I go out with my dog, so in total maybe 1.5h per day, and it's front screen already has little visible - but still - scratches.
I only have a Fold 4 and love it for everything but yeah I'm glad they got the glass right cuz the Note 8 glass was a tragedy that was going to make me quit Samsung considering that's what I had to deal with IMMEDIATELY AFTER living through having a Note 7 and basically forced recall cuz I had to get on a plane.
I work in a cast iron foundry, dealing with hot iron and sand for 10 hours a day, 4-5 days a week. I've had the S24u for almost a year now, and I still have no major noticeable scratches on my screen (lots of microscratches and one tiny scratch at the bottom, but I keep forgetting it exists). Still runs great, still looks great, still charges even with sand, and cameras still go good. We'll see how it holds up for another year though, lmao.
