Don't let someone take advantage of you.

It's international problem, I live in Poland which is eastern europe slav land and it's common for them to scam. What we end up doing is finding someone that is someone's close family friend and can be trusted.

That's just crazy. You can buy 2-3 used cars for that.

Yep. That’s really frustrating for sure! So very difficult to trust mechanics. Sadly this is an age old problem. When traveling from place to place motorists are even more vulnerable to dishonest mechanics than when they live in a regular home or apartment. Don’t just want to pick on mechanics. Wherever there’s money to be made there are risks of getting ripped off-doctors, dentists, lawyers, building contractors, real estate developers and agents. Well, at least you didn’t have to pay the higher price and your car got fixed. Might find interesting results if you Googled how to avoid mechanic rip off when traveling.

True. It's possible to be ripped off any place. To be charged unnecessary extras seem to happen especially with franchises though. So might be the best to stay with smaller businesses who don't pass their overhead to the customer. Otherwise we may be asked to pay for someone's fountain in their lobby.

@@allmaxtube …have experienced rip offs at franchises and independent shops. I know people who tend to blame themselves for getting ripped off. They ask, “What did I do that could have caused the ripped off?” I tend to be that way since I can always change myself. I can always keep learning how to be smarter and safer, but I can’t change corporations or mom and pop shops. That’s how I find closure, and it keeps me from being bitter about the bad experience.

That's true. We can't change them and sometimes we have no other choice than going with the only option in town that has us maybe ripped off. I'd still try to go for smaller shops when possible. Seems like they try to keep things at a fairer price more often. They also have less overhead like staff, showrooms, office space etc.

@@allmaxtube I agree. The best mechanic I ever knew had his own little shop. Fair prices, fast service, friendly, could fix anything on any car, and his shop looked like something out of the 1950s. And right, sometimes we have no choice in the matter. Glad you are back on the road again!

Since the drop in the value of the dollar, these people are monopolizing the market.
