- Self-Portrait and A River by A.K. Ramanujan - NET SET | Indian Literature | Heena Wadhwani
In this video, two major poems by A.K. Ramanujan are discussed.
1. Self-Portrait is an introspective short poem. In this, the poet feels a sense of identity crisis and self-alienation. While looking at the shop-window, he sees not himself but the portrait of a complete stranger. Remember, the year when Self-Portrait was published (1966), Ramanujan was living in the U.S.A. He did feel torn between his Indian identity and American dream.
2. A River depicts a river flowing in Madurai, which, during floods causes great loss of life and property. The poet complains that even after this river causes so much destruction, none of the poets (old or young) have brought this havoc into notice. They simply romanticize the river, despite the fact that it once carried with it three houses, a pregnant woman and cows named Gopi and Brinda. This is a very thoughtful poem written by Ramanujan.
This is an important work, prescribed for UPHESC, BA, MA, NTA NET, SET, UPSC and other competitive exams. This will also help students preparing for GATE, CUET PG and more. This video is a part of the UPHESC English syllabus series by Heena Wadhwani.
