Mosaic Crochet Along (CAL) Pattern 1 - Part 1 - Beginner Friendly Crochet Week 1

  • Опубліковано 9 вер 2024
  • UPDATED TUTORIAL WITH EVEN ROW STARTS AND ROW ENDS CAN BE FOUND HERE AT 4PM EST 1/25/21:
    • Mosaic Crochet Pattern...
    A CHART is now available for this pattern in my etsy store, you will receive two files to down load, 1 for the repeat shown in this tutorial, the other is for those who want to carry on for multiple repeats of the same pattern. Both are included in your purchase: www.etsy.com/F...
    In this video I will teach you Pattern # 1 for our Mosaic Crochet Along! Mosaic crochet is great for all skill levels and can be used to create many different things such as blankets, pillows, purses/bags, totes and garments. You can crochet these patterns in any combination you would like or just choose one and make and entire project with the same design. The result will be an eye catching, geometric design that is unisex and versatile.
    My goal is to put out a minimum of 1 pattern per week.
    To begin your project you will chain in multiples of 10 plus 6 at the end. You will skip the first chain and begin working in the second chain from the hook, ending up with an odd number of stitches. EXAMPLE: I chained 36 and had 35 stitches at the end of my first Foundation Row.
    HOOK SIZE: 5.5 mm for a blanket but if you are doing a bag of any kind or using size 3 yarn I would use a 4.5 mm to 5 mm or smaller.
    THE YARN: I'm using size 4 and mixing in a few colors that are size 3 DK. THE TRICK TO MIXING YARN SIZES IS JUST KEEPING YOUR TENSION EVEN! You can use any yarn size you like.
    Stitches used in this project: Back Loop Single Crochet and Front Loop Double Crochet (drop down double crochet as I like to call it).
    Please see Part 2 for Pattern 1 here: • Mosaic Crochet Along (...
    Please use #fiberfoxstudiosCAL when posting pictures of your work so I can see!

    Hi, Fiber Fox. I discovered your channel just last night, when it was featured by UA-cam in the suggested tutorials list and so very glad that they did! Thank your for mosaic tutorials, I love them. I wish that I had seen your channel sooner, because there weren’t many well detailed mosaic videos! I glad I found you and I have subscribed with notifications on! Looking forward to more mosaic tutorials and some interlocking crochet tutorials too, as is another crochet subject that is not featured much and also still very well guarded, too! Thanking you, again! Wishing you many blessings and protection 🙏❤️🙏

      Hi Ana!!!! Welcome and thank you so much for letting me know how you found me!!! That's exciting to know!!! So glad you are enjoying these videos!! I definitely will be doing more mosaics in different multiples. All of this series is done so it works together. So I'll be doing more that will work together as time goes on! And I'm learning interlocking myself right now, having to figure it out since you are right there isn't too many videos out there on it. I've got a few other things up my sleeve too that will be coming!! I still work full time and travel far for work since I live remotely but lots and lots is coming! I get a new tutorial out weekly minimum so stay tuned and thank you sooooo much for taking time to watch and to comment. I really appreciate it!!!!!

      @FiberFoxStudios  4 роки тому

      Thank you Sandra!!! 😁❤ I know exactly what you mean because I've had the same exact problem when I first did Apache tears. What I have figured out is you have to always do a single crochet grabbing both loops at the beginning and end of your rows and I show that in this video. I only do my second row starting out with a back loop only single crochet, from there I always do a traditional sc. I used to want to carry on all the way down the row and would even do the drop down double crochet on the last stitch amd it caused wonky edges so bad you can't hide them with a border lol

    • @FiberFoxStudios
      @FiberFoxStudios  3 роки тому

      Awwsome!!! And congrats!!! If it were me I would use the updated version of this same pattern to create the hat working in the round. I believe the updated one has a multiple of 9 and it works out perfectly even so it's the best one to use for in the round. You could work it top down by starting in one color doing a magic circle (or a chain 4 and ss to form a ring) and 9dcs or sc into that ring, then increase like normal (row 2 would be 2 dc or sc worked into each stitch (total of 18 stitches for round 2), round 3 would be 1 dc or sc into first stitch, 2 into the next total of 27 stitches at end of round, round 4 36 stitches etc) until you get it to size you want, at that point you can start working the mosaic pattern and once you complete 1 full repeat of the design you can just add a brim and you'll be done, or you can do more repeats but im guessing 1 will be enough for a baby hat.
      Hope this makes sense and helps, if you have any other questions let me know and here is a link to the updated tutorial

      You would use the multiple of 9 that I redid the pattern in, you are correct, you would keep adding 9 stitches until desired size, then add your 3 chains to the end of your chain count. Down in the video description for the new video I linked I have project counts figured out for you as well. Hope this helps!!!

    • @FiberFoxStudios

      146 chains should be enough for a twin size, once you get the starting chains down I would go amd lay it across the bed to make sure it will be enough and adjust from there by either adding or subtracting 10 chains. The chain I'm giving includes the plus 6 at the end. Once you work row 1 you will have 145 chains.

    • @FiberFoxStudios
      @FiberFoxStudios  4 роки тому

      Thank you so much, for a twin I believe you would chain 166 and will have 165 stitches at the end of row one. Regardless of what you are making always chain those + stitches so your pattern works out. So for this one you are commenting on its multiples of 10 + 6, so the count I gave you includes the +6 at the end. Hope this helps!!

      Hi and welcone!!! So the best way to figure out how much yarn you need would be to make a 1 repeat swatch and measure how much yarn you used of EACH color. Then from there you can figure out the exact amount. Here is a video from another creator that I love on how to do the math this way, ua-cam.com/video/ZM9oEkDI7Ho/v-deo.html
      I also want to point out that I have an updated video on this design. This video the row end does not work out the same as the beginning of the row. On the new video the row start and end are perfectly matching. I will pop a link in just a moment of the updated tutorial.
      Edit: here is the link to the updated tutorial ua-cam.com/video/bN8ZPdAw_fU/v-deo.html

      Hi again Justine!!! You are so sweet and I just love reading your comments! What size Yarn are you doing and are you going for more of a throw size or a larger blanket for your bed? I would probably start with 166 chains for a throw in size 4 yarn. But if you want something larger or if you are doing it in size 3 yarn, I'd start at 206 chains. You can adjust it by adding or subtracting in sets of 10 chains. The count I'm giving is with the +6 added.

    • @FiberFoxStudios
      @FiberFoxStudios  4 роки тому +1

      Hi!!! Great question. For me there are a few reasons I do it this way...1. I like a lot of color changes so carrying up my yarn is not really an option, my color changes every row, even if I am working with only 2 colors in that section. I have seen the other tutorials and they seem to be turning their work and working back to the "start" in the same color. That's a different method than I am using. 2. For me carrying up the yarn tends to end with me making a mess, I get all tangled up! I was self taught on mosaic so I just figured it out this way so I can't wrap my head around the other way of doing it lol. Both methods create really stunning pieces though! I end up with tons of tails but I have seen ways of doing a double sided enclosed border to handle those I've never done one myself, I using just weave in all my tails and knot off and clip the rest. The double border seems much easier though!! Thank you so much for watching and asking your question!!

    When making a small blanket , which is the best yarn to use. I know some yarns tend to fuzz .

      @FiberFoxStudios  4 роки тому

      I've had great luck with Lion Brand Mandala not fuzzing up. Also paintbox yarns has been very good as well both of those are size 3 DJ though. The worst fuzzing that I've had happen was actually with Red Heart with Love. My sister has had one of my baby blankets for over a year, all done with Red Heart Super Saver and it's not fuzzing up, still looks grear. She doesn't use a garment bag or anything to wash it. She washes it alone or with a light load of baby clothes and into the dryer it goes so I think the regular old super saver is a great choice if you are looking for a medium size 4 yarn for your blanket.

      @FiberFoxStudios  4 роки тому +1

      I've got a few videos about the yarns I use for mosaics but literally any yarn is good! It's more what project are you going to make that may steer your choice. I almost exclusively use 100% acrylic yarns, sizes 3 dk weight and size 4 medium weight. Occasionally I mix in some cotton too if it's a color I want but only have in cotton. I usually make blankets, pillows, washcloths and bags. Bags and washcloths/dish towels I recommend Cotton, blankets etc 100% acrylic. But blends and even wool can be used. I'll link my video on yarns I use below in case you are interested! I go for what's cheap and readily available because I tend to use tons of colors. ua-cam.com/video/jxMRTkJGbXc/v-deo.html

      So I started figuring out pattern 3 in a 12 multiple amd it actually works out better in a 12. Nothing changes with it repeat wise per row, all you do is chain 12 in multiples of 12 plus 4 at the end. How crazy is that!!! Same on Pattern 4. You literally just increase the starting chain and begins each row the same and they are working up where the row end matches better to the row beginning.

      Hi Mandy, I have s video on how I combine the different multiples but with Apache tears it's the easiest to do. You can change your multiple on Apache tears to 5 with a multiple of 10. Or you can keep the multiple the same and you will fill in the extra stitches by doing adding to bk loop sc to the beginning of the row and to the end. Always base your project off of the larger repeat when you mix the multiple s. Hope this helps!

This was all before I figured out how to create the charts to keep this from happening. I'm really sorry. Ok so it's looking like yes you DO need to have the 5 additional stitches and you do need to make sure the first stitch that you are slip stitching in as you form the circle, you will be doing your first bk loop single crochet in it AND COUNTING that stitch, so eliminate the traditional sc since you are doing it in the round.
      When I worked it that way it worked out perfectly. So multiples of 10 plus 5 at the end and very first stitch in each row you will slip stitch into it AND DO your bk loop sc in it.
      The very first row where you start doing color A (the first drop down dc, first white row in my video) you are doing 3 bk loop sc, 4th is a drop down dc, then 8 bk loop sc and 1 drop dc just like the video says for the repeat for that row. When you make it Back around when you are going to slip stitch you don't do the traditional sc you will just slip stitch and start your next row by working the back loop sc in that same stitch. If you do it right you will have exactly 8 stitches between each of your drop down DC's.
