episode 10 is adapted from the short stories compiled in volume 10 but other than that yes, it's a stellar adaptation, one of the best for the LNs I've read personally ^^
One of my favorite pieces of symbolism in this show is how the two pets of Spearhead reflect the Republic and the 86. Fido is autonomous robot, yet clearly contains a human level of intelligence. He’s able to speak, learn, and even sacrifice himself to protect his owners. While he has no offensive capabilities, he is there with them on the battlefield. He is there to observe and to remember those who fight and those that have fallen. Fido, just like Shin, is able to carry their memories until he reached his final destination. To Shin and the rest of Spearhead, he was not just a support droid. Fido was a companion, a brother-in-arms on the battlefield. An equal. Which is why he has a Name like the rest of them. An honor bestowed upon those who survive for years in the 86th district. And for the same reason, it is why the black cat lacks an official name. After all, the cat never joins them on the battlefield. It only sits at the barracks where it’s safe and plays with 86 when they return. Despite being flesh and blood, it is unable to share in the experiences of Spearhead and be their equal. Just like Lena. Raiden, after Lena asks them for their names, berates her for her hypocrisy, but ends with “If that’s okay with you, we’ll keep talking with you to kill time.” That’s all the cat and Lena can do: help make their remaining days just a little more comfortable. And ultimately, while Fido joins the remaining five on the suicide mission, the cat and Lena are left behind.
I think that the LN says that Fido has a programming of a dog. That his father ??? made it and that's the reason Fido has so many memories of younger Shin and is so loyal to him
@@leoboussami It's not like is important to the anime. It doesnt talk about it like it doesnt talk about Shin origins, the reason for his power, etc... and that's included in volumes 1 and 2, the ones the anime adapt, so it's not like is going to be relevant (never gonna appear)
The LN are great...but it is a very faithful adaptation. Even better, the light novels are getting english language audiobooks with some of the actors from the show.
Lena finding the drawing in the barracks has to be one of the most heart-wrenching moments in all of anime, which is a testament to how well A1 handled the adaptation. From the music, to the photography, to the voice acting, they completely killed it. And to quote Jecht: "You'll cry. You're gonna cry. You always cry. See? You're crying!"
I wouldn't recommend reading the light novels quite yet. While the adaptation is fateful, the anime adaptation adjusted the sequence of events _a lot_ (and for good effect, I might add). Even reading the first volume of the light novel would spoil most of season two towards the end. Honestly, the LNs are good, but the directorial decisions and visual storytelling in the anime completely surpass the source material, in my opinion.
Yes! And I really feel like the made the most out of the medium to improve the pacing and storytelling. So will the LN's are excellent, would definitely hold off until the entire anime is finished
You asked about the toolbox they left with Fido in the full reaction, I don't remember if that part was included here. The toolbox they left is Shin's memorial box with all the mech tags from everyone who's died in the troops he's been in (576 people I think?), that he's been carrying with him.
I wonder did they pay attention to the images when the Shepherd was going on about his “I will kill anyone who threatens the princess” rant. Most people does not pay much attention to the girl that appeared there so does not recognize it at first in season 2
I forgot that so much happens in each episode of 86 that I was shocked it was only episode 11. No wonder I binged the entire series when I first watched it 😅
This ends Cour 1 and Volume 1 of the LN. Cour 2 covers Volumes 2 and 3. There's 11 Volumes, so far. That being said, the books are beyond amazing in their narrarive, character interactions, action, emotion, etc. This story is simply AMAZING and the adaptation is a MARVEL.

So much symbolism in 86...Kaie's dying plants, the countdown board slowly fading, the vision of Rei...such a good series. I'm glad to see more people seeing this series. I remember watching this when it came out. I cried until my eyes couldnt do it anymore (and with the last episode too... I cried because of a robot!!!) Just think that I had to wait months until the second season. It still hurts... (and the 3 months to the ending nearly killed me. 100% worth the wait)
14:24 Please do read the LNs! They're great and the story just keeps getting better with every arc. The pacing is actually very well panned out across the anime in regards to the LN:anime ratio. It also helps that the author - AsatoAsato, was heavily involved in the anime. She had a say in what was definitely needed in the adaptation versus what could be scrapped for time's sake. In interviews it's stated that the director would confer with her as to how scenes should be portrayed.

I have to cry also every time I binge 86 and I am almost 60yrs old :) This episode started peaceful and funny ( at the school ) and turned evil only a few seconds later. Are they all dead now ? Well let me ask a counter question: " Did you see blood ? " The enitity who wants to protect / avenge the princess. You almost got the point. The " princess " will tell the whole story later. ;) Lena at the barracks: Very emotional and an other big step in Lena's evolution. At the beginnig of this sequence was a scavenger that looked like Fido but his collar was blue. He was pure AI and it made differend noises. This episode is the finale of cour / part one. The whole anime has 23 episodes plus 3 recaps, according to the way CRUNCHYROLL counts. CYA
This episode/season/anime ripped me apart. I am still convinced that, for a certain type of person who enjoys/thinks of life a particular way, this is one of the best anime ever. War, hate, love, terror, sadness, madness, hope, human consequence, human depravity, sacrifice, true companionship, furious yearning to right wrongs, self deprecating arrogance, existential horrors. 86 will NOT go easy on you. Lena is OP AF.
86 is a great show, but its biggest weakness is how misleading the cour 1 ending is. Regardless, the show shines with its symbolism, use of music and its commentary on war/racism
Could someone who has read the source material answer me if the anime has faithfully followed what is in the light novel since then? I was thinking about buying the light novels but from that moment on I started to think that the story asked for a lot of quality when it insists on false deaths and absolutely everything that involves Augusta Frederica Adel-Adler (what an unbearable character). My hope is that maybe the original material has better developed the things I didn't like and that's why I'm not sure if I should buy it or not.
Oh it is faithful, actually did a bit better. One of the few anime adaptations that's comparatively as good as the source material or a bit better! Light novel is a must have!
From what I am told, it is very faithful almost 1:1 with some scenes changed for better "cinematography". One example is ep 22. The male character there isnt attacked by a random legion and Frederica is inside his cockpit already. And his inner monologue at the start isnt there in the LN. Also, Frederica is a great character what do you mean?

Yes, 86’s anime adaptation is very faithful to the LN. This first cour is solely from Volume 1. (Comment will update as I watch)

The directors are industry veterans and it absolutely shows. The last episode is brilliant and only awes you more once you understand the final scene.

There are 23 ep total for this season when you combine both coirs. Hopefully, we get a real season 2 sometime.
