As someone who read the light novel I simply can’t express how incredible the adaptation for 86 is. So much care and attention was put into this anime and I adore it. It’s so rare to find an adaptation that goes above and beyond but 86 did that and more. It turned a novel series I thought was pretty cool into an anime I consider a masterpiece.
@@UndeadLromor Honestly I think just watching the anime is ok. The anime covers up to volume 3 in the novels, and I think up to volume 10 or 11 have been translated currently. There are some differences of course. The novels are a bit grittier and a bit more in depth on some technical things, but overall the anime is honestly better in my opinion. If you want to continue the series you can pretty much just start reading volume 4 as it pretty much picks up off right where the anime ended. Though personally I’m waiting to continue reading the series as I’m hoping we get another season. (And praying it doesn’t turn out like Mushoku season 2 lol)
For me 86 is masterpiece. Only thing I would change is from this episode to Giad. Don't want to spoil much for some, but you know what I am talking about. They indirectly point it out in this episode ending and start of next, but I think it would be more impactful/emotional if they would have went with original. I think they just didn't have space for it and didn't want to confuse people.
@@UndeadLromor Yes it is, especially the chapters that have Reis monologues or Jérôme dialogue, since they were the parts that "suffered" the most with the adaptation(it is still one of the best LN animes out there, alongside Seishun Buta Yarō), it is also such an easy read, you can easily do a volume per week.
@AutoSave Btw, I remember an interview with the author where she said that this episode, in a slightly different form, was how the story originally ended. She posted it and said, "That it. What do ya'll think?" The reception was so, so very extremely positive, and the demands for more were intense. She thought, "Fuck it. This world has more story to give."
this episode really made me appreciate Lev Aldrecht as a character the light novels even more so this anime and the books do a phenominal job at telling a very human story even a depressing one
also the reason the maintenance crews are all of the older generation and are never sent out on the special recon mission is because they had technical skills that basically made their lives in the eyes of the alba more valuable they were all the 86 and in the case of lev, alba who couldn't fight on the battlefield anymore for whatever reason but had mechanic skills thus they were protected from the mission and were deemed "valuable"
So, quick history lesson regarding the special edition episode. 86 released as a 2-cour anime, with the first part being episodes 1-11 (airing April 11, 2021 to June 20, 2021) and the second part being episodes 12-23 (airing October 3, 2021 to March 19, 2022). Given that there was 3 and a half months of real time between when episode 11 and episode 12 came out, the special edition episode is a recap of the first cour to get people refreshed/caught up for part 2. Since you just finished part 1, you can safely skip the special edition episode.
23 episodes with 3 special episodes on top of that. I just want to say, I love watching you guys reactions to anime but this series is one of my all time favorites. The raw and real emotions this story invokes will shake you to the core. I'm thankful to follow on this journey.
oh yeah by the the way, they confirm this in the novel but the anime didn't the picture the team took is really blur, Lena does not know what they look like other then general feature
@@ilikechicken4103 yeah it suppose be really bad photo because the 86 group only have old camera to took it but i guess animator wasn't told to make it blurry
@@ilikechicken4103 Yea, looks like an oversight, or they ment to show how it used to look right after they took the photo, but I dont think polaroid photos get blurry over time? They can lose color and fade, though.
@@Ach476Spoiler . . Iirc, it’s not the actual photo that we get to see later, it’s how Shin remembers the photo looked when it was taken. He saw the photo and filled in the gaps with his memory of it. At least, that’s the justification of it. Could’ve been just an animator’s error as someone else said.
Ah yes, episode 11. I haven't reacted to an ending like that since Aldnoah Zero's 1st cour ending. Glad you're both watching this series though! Enjoying your reactions and insight!
13:32 is already such a massively impactful moment for Lena but having read the last bit of volume 11 it feels even more insane. SPOILER Jerome facing down Vaclav, grinning as he tells him that he’d better bring his A game and the weight of the entire Legion to bear because otherwise Lena is going to fight and win against them…the Legion really had no idea what kind of monster they created.
Loved all your reactions on 86 Since you both like the ending song you should also listen to "Voices of the Chord" which is like an alternate ver of the ED. It was played during the recap episode after this one. The Lena scene at the end where she finds the letter hit harder for me with this bgm
Great reaction as always! The book Lena finds is a Real book, All quiet in the western front. I don't know why but that moment hit me so hard when first saw it.
"Special edition" is just a recap episode. There's a brief teaser for the "next season" after the credits that's new animation, but thats it. It's about 6 seconds of "new content," but it's pretty empty content
Its always so strange that they would think lena was going to survive and shin was going to die. The story has been set up for the exact opposite. Even his team said that lena could have been the one to give him a purpose again . Well having to reap her would certainly check the box.
Gotta put in a good word here for the English dub. The actors read their individual writing in that ending scene with Lena and it's very moving. Yes, some dubs are worth watching.
I rewatched it in eng dub and it was def worth it. Also, knowing about shin's english dub VA broke me. RIP Billy Kametz, you are missed & we'll never forget
The reason the Legion doesn't kill any of the 86 in that fight is because they want them intact so they can harvest their brains. A lot of people miss that on the first watch.
I used to do the same on my first reaction rewatch, but after rewatching the entire cour 2, i enjoyed it a lot more than on my first watch for some reason.
And there goes the 2nd out 3 episodes of this series, that is worth watching a reaction video of. Looking forward to the 3rd one. Which episode will that be? Spoilers!
Really? With this series almost every episode has moments that i look forward to seeing reactions to it, but this is definitely one of the highlights. I still remember how I felt after seeing this episode for the first time.

It has been the only light novel adaptation that I believe surpassed the original
Do you think it's worth to read the novel after watching the anime?

It’s crazy how 86 has two of the best season finales in all of anime… this ep is so fucking good.
it was just one season tho. but for me all episodes were hype.

Pay attention to the light emitted when Löwe approaches Shin, it's an extremely important clue connecting to the next episode
Next episode is primarily a recap. But the final ~5-10 second shot is original content. I'd recommend if you feel like watching it, do it off camera.
In novel the tank type legion was a “back up” of shins brother where comes to save shin and took him and his comrades to the border of Giad
And here comes 3 months of waiting ... oh wait, not this time!
