Has anyone idea why North Macedonia was recognizing only North Korea until 2019? Is it solidarity between countries with the “North” word in official or not name of the country?

    • @iCheZee

North Macedonia wasn't called North Macedonia until like 2019 lol It was FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia) but then Greece kept complaining because it has a province bordering Macedonia also called Macedonia so to stop confusion FYROM changed its name to N. Macedonia.

Recognizing a state means recognition of its sovereignty (laws, territory, etc.)
You can still have diplomatic relations with non-state actors, many countries do. And everyone knows and acknowledge the existence of non-state actors. Sovereignty is the key part. The rights of a country. Since US don't recognize North Korea for example, technically South Korea invading the North would not be considered a invasion as NK is not a country but a rogue province(s). Same thing PRC is saying about ROC. State owned TV or nationalists all call Taiwan a province. Just listen for "Taiwan sheng" and they'll criticize foreign involvement in what they call "domestic affairs" because they don't recognize the sovereignty of Taiwan.
The silly thing is that its just a political lingo for not having any real diplomatic relations, trade, or cooperation. Sometimes, Taiwan is an exception... But anyways, Russia dismissed Ukraine's sovereignty, questioning its existence as part of is rhetoric. But no one really cares (except for their allies) and sanction the hell out of Russia anyways. The thing is sovereignty can't be decided by a single country, it is decided by international consensus. It is why Russia gets sanctioned, Taiwan has a strong economy and gets military support. And US leaders still meet with North Korea.

I think you and many others misunderstand what the official recognition actually means. Nobody denies that these places exists, that there are people living there or that they have governments. The question is who is the legitimate government of Korea. Both North and South Korea officially state that Korea is a single country with a single legitimate government, they just disagree on who that legitimate government is. Countries who recognize only South or North Korea are stating who they believe is the legitimate government, while countries who recognize both are stating they believe Korea is and should remain two separate countries and both governments are legitimate. Countries that recognize neither just had no opinion on the matter, with the exception of Taiwan who revoked their recognition of South Korea because South Korea revoked their recognition of Taiwan (that's another whole can of worms).

Not exactly. It was a compromise between the US and the USSR that neither side was happy with. Obviously the U.S recognizes that North Korea exists, they just don't recognize it as the legitimate government government of Korea. They officially agree with the South Korean position that Korea is one country and the South Korean government is legitimate while the North Korean one are essentially rebels. Conversely, North Korea and it's supporters also believe Korea is one country but that it is the North Korean government that is legitimate.
Recognizing both is essentially making an official statement that Korea not one country, but two, and both governments are the legitimate governments of the their own territory while having no claim to the other's.

Not trying to blame anyone, I'm just saying that sometimes some facts can be pushed away, so some degree of misinfo is to be expected (especially with sensitive topics like this one)
