    No way, Shane Kosugi son of real life ninja Sho Kosugi? I saw him in the extremely underrated Black Eagle movie when he was a kid. Good to know he's still making stuff.

    It was a cool night, I was peacefully lying in my bed and dreaming, when all of a sudden my windows shattered from the 'ITADAKIMASU' sonic boom that travelled across the ocean and slammed into my apartment.
    Then another one hit, and another, and another. Before the last one even landed I was cowering under my bed and crying from the constant shell shock.
    Angela please get this animal under control.

    Wait... SHANE KOSUGI?! BROTHER OF KANE KOSUGI AND SON OF SHO KOSUGI?! I came in expecting Nick's usual antics and some nice konbini bentos but was suddenly caught off-guard by the appearance of a member of the Kosugi family. Great work as always, Nick.

    If the director did a director's cut in the movie, the part of the main character yelling itadakimas in the fight scene would be hilarious and at the end of the fight scene he yells umai as he leaves.

    For me, the best bento option is still sandwiches tbh - I feel like I've made it through like half of Japan (~26/47 prefectures so far) mostly powered by Tamago Sandos (with the occasional Katsu Sando or Inari Sushi) when I'm out sightseeing.

    Ummmm there's a real problem with low audio level from 01:03 😒 Was this all done with camera audio not wireless mics ?
    Remember any phone makes an excellent audio recorder, especially if it's in your shirt pocket or sitting between you.
    I've got a US$100 Tascam DR05X and it's fantastic for interview voice recording. The stereo mics are really sensitive within 6 feet. It also works great with a $10 Boya lapel mic 👍

    The price of that tea is crazy...roughly 50 cents? In the US it's at least triple the price on sale, but can go as high as $4 per bottle in some stores. U couldn't even buy a juice pack for 50 cents in the US. Also crazy to see Shane Kosugi from Sasuke aka Ninja Warrior!

    • @bubbledoubletrouble
      @bubbledoubletrouble 8 місяців тому +1

      A few things to keep in mind when talking about how cheap that tea is:
      1) Economies of scale: The more you sell, the more you make, the cheaper the fixed costs are.
      2) Import costs: Tea is mostly water, and water is bulky, so moving it around is expensive.
      3) Median household income: Japanese household income is less than 2/3 of American household income. It seems cheap to us because on average we make more.
      I will say that the local Costco was selling a two 12-packs for $16 last time I was there, but I know their pricing varies by region so YMMV...

    Interesting. The first bento in Roppoingi would have cost 400-500 up here in Iwate in a grocery store. 600-700 at a konbini. Second one LOOKS really good. Saitama. But it sounds like maybe it's not all that great. The third one, well yeah, she said it. "Everyone likes karaage." True story. The schools I work in polled the students about their favorite lunch, and karaage won by a lot.
    The best bento I've had was at a hotel in Ofunato, Iwate. Ofunato Plaza Hotel. But here, we have bento companies that our schools have used a few times, and they were very good compared to the konbinis.
    And the konbinis are... okay. The grocery stores are better, and I usually go for the tonkatsu or the fried shrimp.
    I cook, and I wanted to learn about bento culture and make proper bentos. I learned that (I think that I learned that) a proper bento should contain all 5 colors of food in Japanese culture. I'll leave it to you if you want to check it out. But that's how I learned a lot about Japanese tsukemono and pickled stuff, and I love beni shouga. When I make the bento, I like to use beef, with cucumbers and beni shouga. And takuan, with rice.
    But my bentos generally are too big and they draw glances/comments from time to time. "Wow, that's a lot of rice..." for example. But I know I can get away with it here, so I do it. School lunch is too small for me.
    But yeah, you gotta ditch that car sometime and check out those train stations, especially in Tokyo. I found some great stuff near Ikebukuro Station. And, you can enjoy some of those nice grape beverages. I actually found Koriyama in Fukushima very pleasant.

      This is true, the best way to enjoy a bento is on the bullit train with a cold beer. Soon I will film this content as I have travel plans.

    Osu. Great content Shihan. I know you were showing the bentos for how economical they are, but are the portions really enough to fill up a 95KG man? Also, in Japan, do they list the protein content and total calories. I know it's all in Japanese, but a foreigner could use Google lens on their phone to translate into their native language. I'm just wondering this all because someday when I get to Japan, there will be a seven eleven bento with my name on it.

    • @tdolan500
      @tdolan500 8 місяців тому +2

      7-11 has the best English labelling if you need to keep track.
      As for bentos being filling is very subjective, they come in different sizes and they are meals you can take with you so it’s probably not a use case that you’ll have one for lunch if you’re out exploring a city. There’s just so many better options.
      A bento is something you would grab for a longer train trip or if you’re stuck in an office or somewhere you can’t get lunch.
