  • I've been so indecisive whether to post this vlog or not guys. I really am no way a professional, I'm simply just sharing some exercises I was given to try and I really do think they helped.
Thank you for watching and as always hope you guys enjoy the video. Don’t forget to hit that 👍 if you do! Your support means so much to me.

I noticed that when Addie was on the right-hand rein jumping the fence, she landed on the right rein , but when she jumps on the left rein she always still lands on the right-hand lead. I think this was a good exercise without overwhelming her. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work

Really good, Emily! It's awesome to see training videos...the good, bad and ugly. You don't simply turn up at a comp as the finished article and it's really inspiring to watch your journey :D

The messy middle is how I’ve heard it described and it is so important to know that everyone goes through it!

This looked so amazing! She’s developing into such an athletic and stunning girl! One suggestion I have from just an animal training perspective and definitely not an expert rider one (I’m not even an amateur so take this with a grain of salt if needed), is as you continue these training sessions be really particular with when you pat/reward. Such as if she steps out of the square halt (good time to practice those for dressage!) or tries to throw her head or shoulder to not reward, instead just continue into the next go. It may be easier for her to read with what exactly you want from her and she might even try harder the next time around. Obviously being the first session this was a lot of ground work laid out for her so rewarding was necessary after each attempt. Can’t wait to see how this helps her in the future 🥰🥰 best of luck!

Anything that gets her back end engaged. She grabs for it on the fore hand but the back end simply trails. Once she builds that which comes with experience and age as muscles develop. She’s and epic little mare.

I love this!! I do exactly what you do and "coach" myself through it, then sort of analyze & reflect after some tries and see what's going on as you relate it to what your instructors have given to work on. I absolutely LOVED this Vlog! Your so in tune with Addie & your own riding and it's an awesome showcase!!! Your hard work is ROCKIN!!! Awesome Riding!

I'm impressed with all those square halts! Don't forget that you can work in some dressage training (square halts) even though you're jumping...

So glad you decided to post this after being conflicted. Imposter syndrome is a real kicker and it's so hard to deal with, so well done getting over the fear of posting this one. Great vlog as others have said it's great to post you putting pointers into practice in your own training! Also loving the addition of Suzie to your videos! (please let us know how they like their name spelt as I agonised over which one to choose😂), absolutely adore their fantastic energy, smile and what they bring to the vlogs! Xx

Having an instructor that always always forces me to turn from the outside rein to have that outside shoulder perfectly straight, I have a tiny tip for you. When you have walked and halted (which is looking FABULOUSLY rideable btw), instead of just walking off around the natural turn of arena, turn her in a small circle towards the wall before then picking up trot/canter again.
This is something I picked up from watching a Charlotte Dujardin clinic years ago. It really teaches them to always pay attention to the rider's steering and cues, instead of just following the natural circle around the arena themselves (which leads to falling in). In the dressage arena, a great one is to trot across the diagonal, and before you reach your wall, come down to walk and just turn very sharply (but politely) into the wall and go the other way.

The halt also helps with rocking her back onto her hocks so that she doesn't just barrel through the corner and get heavier. Not sure if Simon suggested to reinback a few steps after halt, but that used to work well on my old jumper who would try and take over at times. I also found turning the opposite way after the reinback to be quite helpful. It also helps to change the direction a bunch on horses that need these little incentives to keep the rhythm and stay mindful of who is in charge. The halt also will help set you up for lead changes should you want to teach her how to swap in the turn one day.
Oh and another great exercise to help them use their body better is a few one strides in a row as a gymnastic with an oxer in the middle. If you were to do an upright to an oxer to an upright, it absolutely will force her to have to use her body more correctly. That setup is also great to allow you to work on your position and soft hands. She's growing up so lovely and you've put so much hard work into her! By no means are these comments critiques but ideally just added words of wisdom from a rider who also used to have a very eager jumper. Keep up the great work with her!!

Some ideas. v poles on the jump so she has to stay in the middle, and jump up and rounder, and straighter. Definitely put the landing pole closer, 9' usually, so she can't dive after and must focus on picking her feet up. Also can add in jump standards after the fence that are placed narrow to practice landing and having to be straight. Be aware if you are hanging on one rein more as your coming to a fence. Good job being disciplined.

definetly educational and really interesting - I think you're right about putting a camera, at the end of the school, to see what both you, and Addie do after a jump. Still think you should look into BHS - because you do know what you're talking about, you genuinely do, it's completely instinctual for you too, which is SO rare.

This exercise is good, for the diving do the poles a bounce distance either side so 3 strides! This will help her bascule a little more, push from behind and not dive so much on landing which should help you pull her up quicker for the halt. The fence doesn’t need to be big and the oxer can be a lot wider ☺️

I enjoy this drill a lot. I mentioned it before one thing I would suggest if you watch the video when you're done I would suggest that you say wow. One stride after the jump. When you watch the video, you see you do it. 234 strides out. And it's a little too late. My opinion but I love the drill.

I have a friend exactly like Suzie!! Everyone should have one! I have mentioned this before! There are kids out there watching your vlogs that cannot even get access to riding lessons let alone a H & C subscription! Why do you not all four of you? Not have a platform or some kind of charity to help?
