This is a wonderful piece and a wonderful interpretation by Valentina. Liszt would rise from the grave and start clapping!!! I wish that society would learn to appreciate this kind of music more. It seems that we live in a society that considers music as "Arts and Entertainment". I believe music is much more than entertainment. Music is one of the ways in which we say, "I am alive and my life has meaning." It has its way of finding deep emotions with in us. An example is this performance.
This masterpiece is so underrated and again you showed your beautiful understanding of music with this amazing interpretation. The extra keys are dope.
A brilliant performance of a great work! When one thinks of Ballade, the name Chopin comes to mind, but here is a work to stand alongside the four by Chopin. If I had to choose a handful of keyboard composers to take to a desert island, Liszt, Chopin, Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev would be the best choices.
Valentina, as a long term fan I consider this performance your finest yet! I have never heard anything more spectacular and moving than this. I thank you for the great enjoyment you have brought to so many. Long may you continue!
ditto. Finally a performance of this piece that I can enjoy from beginning to end. Liszt's music needs more performers like this to be fully appreciated.
I can't describe how much I'm grateful to you for the possibility to hear this sound miracle - 97-keys Bösendorfer Imperial, under your nice hands in 2 ballade- Liszt!! I listen to it many times in a row- I possess a very qualitative volumetric spickers - hence the goosebumps are guaranteed...
Can't stop listening to this beautiful piace over & over again. Classical music comes to life under your fingers, it's just magical! I'd very much like to see you in London this summer... If I just could come, I live in Russia. Thank you for what you're doing!
The Deuxieme ballade always transfixed me, it's sheer variety in term of emotion is amazing. You breathed fresh life into this piece again, rare. Thank you. X
I haven't heard that much of Liszt's music yet, but this has got to be my favourite piece so far and to hear it played like this on such a glorious piano feels like a real privilege. So for this I sincerely thank you, Ms. Lisitsa.
Wow !!!!! The thunderous sound of those lowest Bosie notes are a chilling revelation...it is OTHER-WORLDLY! Liszt would have approved, there is no doubt.
Valentina Lisitsa ist definitiv wie die imponierend Bösendorfer Modell 290 Imperial Konzertflügel, eine Pianistin, die in Jeder Sinn eine sehr Vollständige und Außergewöhnliche Qualität aufweist. Simply, "Das Beste vom Besten".
Kudos for you Valentina! Fastastic! Bosys are fantastic but they become epic when you are playing them. I love your work! Can't thank you enough for your UA-cam channel.
Remarkable imagination and technichal prowess Valentina, I have heard the Liszt B Minor Ballade many, many times but your performance here hs left my hair standing on end. Your originality is more astounding than your technique. Truly wonderful.
This is fabulous, Valentina! Even on the bass notes within the normal range, one hears the depth of the Bösendorfer Imerial. This piano really deserves its name and with you behind it, one reaches as yet unheard of levels of music.
Lol, I'm a guitar player too and I love Liszt. I'm also trying to incorporate nice little licks from him into my playing. It's really something awesome to do.
What a thing to hear - and what a performance! Hats off! If you might forgive this digression... Valentina your cool North Carolina 'hurricane' ballade 2 (which i loved) rekindled my belief that Liszt's pictorial imagination 'anticipated' cinema. This performance makes this so evident ... with the sound of this grand instrument you are showcasing Liszt's music in a way that raises it to the rarified level that it has always deserved. The music 'zu kommen' is finally here! A heartfelt: Bravo.
Everytime i listen to this piece it always reminds me of Hurricane Irene. I see what you were talking about. I've never heard such low notes on a iano before. All I have to say is WOW!!!!!!
Mesmerising performance! This tour de force of a piece was made for the Bosendorfer and Valentina was born to perform it. I can't get enough of it and would love to hear it live some day.
I'm so glad I subscribed to Valentina's channel. I get the updates right in my email as a little surprise to wash away the stress of the day. Thanks Valentina!
If there is any piece able to show the power of a piano, it is definitely this Ballade, and Lisitsa playing on a Imperial Bösendorfer makes it even more impressive
In spite of the good comments I have made about this performance in the past, I am more critical now that I realise she skips a passage at 12:33. And there really is too much pedalling throughout; it allows us to hear the awesome sonority of this Imperial Bosendorfer, but the notes become blurry and harder to hear.
Rudolf, I know what you mean, yes it is Liszt's music and I would never put him second. I would guess he never heard his work played on a piano such as this. I think Valentina is doing the best performances I have ever heard. I agree that we are very likely hearing the next best to Liszt himself played on the best piano the world has seen. What a lovely quality of recording we are getting.
Ms.Val. I was right, and you accomplished concert upload in Beethoven-Haus again. I like the ballad second of this Franz List very much as I wrote it before. The damage of the typhoon was given recently in Japan, but the hurricane of North Carolina seemed to be great. But your performance is greater. You're very beautiful. I always always appreciate that I impress you so much. Please upload various music. A postscript: I ordered a CD of the Duo of you and Hilary Hahn!
Oh, my god. I think my sennheiser in-ear earphones are pretty good for playing such a low register and the effect is AMAZING. I imagine how does that sound live. I felt a strong fear.
I have always loved this piece but with your amazing interpretation you just lifted it to an even higher level. I bet Valentina will make a simplest piece ever in a amazing, beautiful as rainbow. Valentina, I so admire you. Actually your the one who inspired me to play piano when I was 4. Now I love playing the piano and I prefer to compose with it. . XD The composer young&rare,Yan Ayrton.
@Ray0X0 Thank you! I quite enjoyed that and that was an amazing performance for a man of his age, but I like Valentina's version better, mainly because of that sustained pause that I commented on where you can hear those rare low notes that produce a sound that's almost omnious! But thanks :) I understood the composition better due to that other version.
12:30 Liszt captured triumph and happiness so beautifully there, and Valentina Lisitsa's interpretation is just beautiful, she loves Liszt for his colours and she really shows that in this performance I think :)
As much as I love Valentina's interpretation here, I do think she made an attempt to show off the merits of her piano here, in some cases distracting from some aspects of the music (but not all! The sostenuto effect from her lower octave was fabulous). At times, her use of the pedal causes extra little details to be blurred together. If you check Horowitz's performance from 1981, he manages to bring out some new voices which I didn't hear here, although I prefer Valentina's tempo choices.
@ValentinaLisitsa Many thanks for saying this! I love this Sonata very much and this year there were so many interpretations of this piece without any emotional connection to it. And I think it is a very dubious thing to put the Sonata on the list of mandatory pieces in a competition as has been done this year. Liszt's eternal masterwork deserves a better treatment.
Wonderful in color and phrasing! You equal Howard, THE Liszt solo specialist up till now. Strange that you emphasize the technicalities of the piano being used so much. Interpretation is for me the essence and the extra keys just a bonus for dramatic effect. Of course the Bösendorfer helps, because it still attuned to finesse and character, while Steinway just goes for volume in the Concert hall.
@ValentinaLisitsa It is Aichi here. Typhoon 15 is near immediately. I am in the workplace and do care of the leak. A brave man is glad at all of me by your warm email. In Japan, a lot of typhoons come. We endure it for a while Lay up for a rainy day. Thank you Val!
I left a comment on the post where he talks about the album with Hilary Hahn! Cross your fingers! I am Italian so the issue touches me personally! Without label I could not buy your wonderful album = (
I wish you came to the George Enescu festival.I would pay 1 billion dollar to hear you,i could learn so many things from you! Please don't miss next edition of the festival.Romanian people would love to see you!
I love how at 8:55 you can still hear the rumble of those extra bass notes as she sings out those next few chords...unbelievable!!
if you listen carefully its there until 9:45 amazing
it's like the echo of Hades

You mean Lisztening?
This is a wonderful piece and a wonderful interpretation by Valentina. Liszt would rise from the grave and start clapping!!! I wish that society would learn to appreciate this kind of music more. 8.30-9.00 : and I thought we would never be able to hear how the big bang sounded like.....
flying fingers!
I repeat the 8:53 echo like 10 times. The echo!!!!!
9:15- ....... I haven't heard a sound like that yet.... I opened my eyes wide when I heard it. Amazing performance.
Wow, that Bosendorfer has a reeeeaaally powerful bass! That Ballade has never sounded better! Fantastic job, Valentina! :)
yes, the piano has made me cry. especially when i stubbed my toe on it once.
This masterpiece is so underrated and again you showed your beautiful understanding of music with this amazing interpretation.
The extra keys are dope.
This video gives me chills and I keep coming back for it :) Thank you Valentina for being awesome.
Oh wow - chills - I feel the passion in your playing this gorgeous liszt piece!
WOW when she sustained those lower chromatics and silently played the next melancholy progression up top as they faded away
HOLY CRAP!!!! Sounded like she tore the the Gates of Hell off their hinges!
I don't usually like Lisitsa's playing but I must admit that this is one of my favourite renditions if the piece.
Why would you take them to a deserted island ??!! They'll die !!!

Didn’t even know the piano could produce such a sound
I didn't know there was such a thing as a 97 key. That's gnarly!
I LOVE YOU.... THIS IS THE MOST CLEAR VERSION OF LISZT'S BALLADE #2 I'VE EVER HEARD... AND OMG THOSE OCTAVES ON 8:00 WERE INCREDIBLE!!!!!

Beautiful performance, Valentina. I love the sense of integrity it has. A real musician playing, as opposed to 'just' a pianist.
Best wishes,
Cary
To write the passage at 1:11, Liszt was to be nothing less than genius.
And at 8:50
The Deuxieme ballade always transfixed me, it's sheer variety in term of emotion is amazing. You breathed fresh life into this piece again, rare. Thank you. X
Thank you very much for this wonderful melody and beautiful way of playing the piano.

so beautiful, so powerful. thank you Valentina. The piece brings tears to my eyes.
Valentina, That was simply marvelous. This, for me, is one of Liszt's greatest works, and you do it justice. A very moving performance. Brava!
