I've got no regrets buying this bass - it looks even better in person and quite arguably the best body style to feature the Texas Tea Finish

Happy Thanksgiving!
Not a bassist myself either but This bass from your video inspired me to pickup my guitar. Great sounding instrument
Nice Demo stunning Bass happy Thanksgiving
That's awesome! Now, if I had the money, and they made one left-handed, I would get one AFAP!!! But, not going to happen, I think... 😥
Nice shape and back cut away, way to many dials / pots for a bass though IMO, ruins the look.
Although i'm a guitarist, and yeah pcb's on guitar or bass is a no go !
Good videos mate, cheers
As a bassist, please have more bass content!!! Especial Fenders!!!
As a guitar player I agree
That really is a stunning instrument. You're right: the finishes are perfect together. Texas Tea is one of the prettiest finishes on any guitar, not just Fenders.
What other guitars are they on? I love it too 👍
Guitarists HATE PCBs on in their guitars, and then buy a dozen pedals to play through...
Thats kinda why they don't need an active circut in their guitars. Bass players who play live sessions usually will require some form of active circut or preamp to get the best sound for both the audience and enough gain going into the monitor system for other musicians to hear them. For recording sessions and situations, a passive bass is preferred because the sound engineer controls the eq, gain structure, noise, etc.
11:24 That's Fender's "Stealth" A-string retainer, helps with the strings break angle over the nut. It's supposed to help alleviate nut buzz. Fender started putting them on their some American made models around 2013-2015(?) I think, not 100% though.
Yep. They work really well, they eliminate the weak A string sound obvious in some passive fenders. Kinda weird as they tend to only fit them to more expensive active instruments. Made a big difference to my P bass when I added one.
I have the same problem when my nuts start buzzing! I get a bit excited. Lol. ;) Lovely bass though.
Is also on the 2011 Fender 60th anniversary P Bass. The limited edition one with the different pic guard
I play hard so i always need that or my A string would pop over
Thought he was gonna play Schism for a second.
Bailey Deppe I’m pretty sure he did at 20:07
absolutely love the channel, keep the reviews comming
That look works so well for the Jazz Bass. Thanks for the coverage of this new model!
absolutely the best review of any instrument I have ever seen! thank you.
Love how this looks, great video trogly!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING thank you for all the content I am very thankful!!!!
When I turned 18 I ended up getting a MIM Jazz Bass and ended up hotroding everything on it. I would recommend keeping up playing bass. It has made me a better rhythm player on guitar. Also you lock in more with the drummer and it helps to be an all around team player in the band.
Me too. When I picked up bass, my rhythm got better.
awesome, i've been waiting for this one
Love these. I will like and comment on any bass vid!
Well done Trogly! I liked your bass playing and really enjoyed your review (and I am a bass player:-).
Fender needs to make this series in lefty...holy crap I need this.
Also, active bass tone still sounds natural, unlike most (*coughEMGcough*) active guitar pickups. And active bass controls give you a lot more onboard EQ control that guitars really don't use. That and guitarists seem to be a lot more IT'S NOT LIKE HOW IT WAS IN 1962!!! than bassists.
Just play right handed you weirdo
@@tylerjames1716 I've been playing for 25 years. No sense becoming a shittier guitarist as an excuse to buy more gear :P
You should 100% consider doing a bass series
Hey buddy
great content!
The next bass I’d love to see you do is the rickenbacker al Cisnero signature.
Considering it has trogly green inlays. Obviously a huge departure from tradition. But yea I’d love to hear you play that bass all fuzzed out. Thanks for all the work you put in!
You bass playing has improved!
This is the Best Review l’ve seen so far
Great review! I would like to see more bass content as well.
Absolutely Luv this Bass ✌️
I own this same Bass, and it is fantastic, the Low profile D neck is just superb, best jazz neck I have played by far, I normally play 4003's but have made this jazz my number one bass, capable of any tone you want Ric tone, Precision, Jazz of course so much flexibility in sound. and build is top notch on my Bass, highly recommend it .
That review was exception. I bought the Ultra Mocha burst Bass and matching Ultra Mocha Burst Strat as well. They look good on their stands next to each other.
That is my absolute favorite J Bass in the new line. The cobra blue one is close tho
Amazing video thank you !
Every item reviewed should be taken apart like this. Love it!
In love with mine!!!!! Artic Pearl V. Amazing bass!!!!! Only gripe... eventually the fret lacquer/dressing wears and peels off. I play mine EVERY DAY!
Actually -- a good number of bassists prefer traditional electronics unless it's a high-end boutique build with custom electronics. This bass is high on my list and I may get one in the near future.
The only thing that worries me is trying to get replacement parts when Fender decides to move on.
Enjoyed your review mate, especially stripping guitar down. I just bought P bass ultra and I’m far to chicken to start taking apart 😄 so was nice to watch you doing. I’m no ace of bass but these ultras seem awesome to me. One day I will upgrade my J bass American performer to your model. It is a truly beautiful thing, cheers
Your bass playing is actually pretty good!
Love that bass!!!
Great Review! 👍
Very nice lookin bass! I see your getting into the fenders pretty good now, very cool! That color is sweet! I love fender! I've been watching your channel now for a while and i think i may know a few guitars you might like to check out if you haven't already. Fender Stratocaster plus. Which is a pretty cool strat run that was big in the late 80's early 90's. American made and they came in some beautiful colors and configurations, Graffiti yellow being one that comes to mind. Lace sensor pickups and so on. Think you might like them and they sell pretty well too depending condition of course. The others you may like are Epiphone les paul Elite/Elitist!! Super nice limited edition Japan made versions! They came with the long neck tenon. Play, look and sound amazing! Fuji-gen factory versions are getting kinda hard to find and are selling for as much as an american made les paul standard these days! All quality pickups and hardwear. Lastly Epiphone Zack wylde les paul customs! Theres 3 i know about my fav being the buzz saw and they made two bullseye versions one was white and black with gold hardwear and the other more rare color is camo. The camo comes with a maple fretboard which is pretty cool to see on a les paul i think. Hope to maybe see one of these gems get your review! Thanks man either way! Rock on!
Nice job on sneaking in the tool
Thank You for this channel. It's different, its honest and it's....well, odd. And I love it! You search the borders...I don't always agree with You, but You dare to express YOUR opinion, and I loooooooove it! (it makes/forces me to think one more time) And YES, THAT is a beautiful instrument even though I never played a bass....guitarist by birth :)
Hooray for basses!
Amazing Video
Love the your vids! Do these have 60’ or 70’ pickup spacings?
I bought it, it's fantastic and awesome.
Damn, the active electronics sound good even flat. That's a good sounding bass. I could use a Jazz Bass in my arsenal and I'm very tempted to save up for one these after this review.
As a guitarrist that plays bass i would recomend checkinh out Adam Neelys guide for guitarrists to play bass
That Texas Tea IS STUNNING!!! You're spot on, everything has been appointed to perfection.
Recently learned with the Fender Molded Case with the TSA locks,... The divots on top near the four corners are for stacking your Fender Guitars. What I found out was they can be stacked up to a recommended 6 guitars high (old style was 4 high).
My only question, why Fender didn't use a similar Battery (power) system as they did on the new Acoustasonic Telecaster? Which uses a rechargeable battery hidden inside the guitar with USB output (located right beside the output jack) . A long USB cord comes with and only needs to be recharged every 20hrs of use. Would Look better than having the two plastic covers on the back.
Thanx For another Great Vid!! Have to say, I'm no bass player either but can understand why you purchased that one.... She is Gorgeous!!
That is so sick. Great finish, too. My next bass will be a Jazz.
I own this bass in blue, it is awesome. It has amazing tone.
Friday arrived early this week!
Bought,it's fantastic!!!!!!
I had the older model but it was just so heavy I would get upper back pain after playing Friday night 3 to 4 hours but I will say the neck was so great easy to play 👍
Stunning bass! Reminds me a lot of the Sire Marcus Miller V7 and V9 basses, having classic looks with all the active EQ options. I'd love to see a review of those one day! I've not been able to play one, but being around the £500 price range means they're right around my price range. I'd just love to know more about them
Just did a Fender vs Sire shoot out and posted the review.
But $500 more
Nice bass, I have a metal looking jag squire one. (similar in design)
This Texas Tea finish is very nice ! I'd love a matching "raw" brass pickguard and bridge, it would match the finish perfeclty. Also, a quick question : how do you clean a dirty nitro finish ?
I absolutely love the Texas Tea finish ! Is this paint colour exclusive to Fender or is it a modern car colour?
What amp you playing through? (Nice review!)
One thing that makes Fender stand apart from Gibson - not to put Gibson down, but Fender has always made some sweet basses. They will always be pertinent to review for the channel. And thanks.
Check out the gibson bass book!
Gibson made a lot of models ;)
www.thegibsonbassbook.com/gallery/
The extra hardware on the A tuner is to put more downward pressure on the nut
Sweet!
Do you plan on having much bass content in the future
Not really. I think Glarry is sending me one of their new ones though
The Trogly's Guitar Show please do, although I’m. A guitarist I would love to learn more about bass, and you are my favorite guitar educator.
Your bass players of subscribers would like some bass content more often. Since you are , I can honestly say, a Gibson expert, I'd like to see some Thunderbirds reviewed, Gibson, Epiphone, vintage japanese....whatever! Another interesting basses, but really not much appreciated, are vintage US made Peaveys and Deans. And, thank you for your content, your channel is a gold mine of guitar information!
Yeah we need more Bass as a Bass Player
@@Trog Please make more B A S S videos. I'm a bassist who likes your channel but I have only a mild interest in vintage guitars. You're just entertaining so I watch anyways.
I got exactly the same bass, about to return it for the second time as it came with a fret buzz on the 5th fret for 2/4 strings, for teh second time. First one, tech guy couldn't get rid of the buzz without raising the action more than it was already, and it was quite high out of the box. He suggested that I return it and get another one.
Same problem with the second one I got. The tech guy suggested that I play at a lower intensity and get the hang of the bass, but a week later, the fret buzz is just not acceptable live or for recording (nor for the price of the bass). Just wondering if you noticed that issue too and were able to fix it? I didn't hear the buzz on yours. I guess it is bad luck on my side, that or Fender's QC just loves me.
I am not even getting picky about the off center screws on the pick guard (both basses suffered from it) or the Philips screw heads that were stripped, again, on both models.
At this point you must think the store duped me by giving me back the one I returned, but I checked the serial numbers and they were quite apart, which suggest a different lot maybe. I really want to love that bass and spend this ridiculous amount of money for a bass I probably do not deserve, but that Texas Tea is having a bit of a bittersweet taste already and wondering if I should even try a third one at this point.
The little guide on the A string tuner is basically a mini string tree.
Nice, Austin! Looks like the Geddy Lee bass, a bit...Black Gold would've been a great name for the finish, also...'Black Gold, Texas Tea'...
Thats a nice bass.
Still don't hear that much difference to other JB Fender iterations to justify the dollars for the ultra.
Beautiful looking bass but then I find looking at 40 yo plus basses beautiful.
He wasn't kidding when he said his not a bass player.
Enjoyed the video all up. Cheers
I played bass for many years before I started playing guitar, and yeah, bassists tend to embrace technology more than guitarists do. Personally, I'm not drawn to active basses, but on-board pre-amps and EQ are lot more popular among bassists than guitarists. Solid state amps are more the rule than the exception, too. You don't really hear bass players pining for the good old days of under-powered, unreliable tube amps that weighed a metric ton, and weren't particularly articulate. You see way more guitarists playing vintage Fender Bassman amps than bassists.
Mine is in process of being shipped to me now! 5 string moca!
Fine looking guitar.
Oh man that looks great. My very first bass was a knock off jazz bass but had that really nice thin neck what people love. I would buy that in a heartbeat Austin but the shipping to the U.K. is probably a shitload of dough? Maybe Anderton's will get some in? Cheers Trog!
The bit on the A tuner is an extension to get a better break angle on the A string...i would prefer if Fender used a single bar across all strings to get a good break angle on all strings, & helps damp a little but i would put a wrap on top of the nut or just behind it to damp out the open string tone...nice Jazz...shame they never took the black binding round the whole edge of neck including front edge of headstock...& or a matching colour headstock same colour as body would be nice imo....nice tone...plus active & passive,kool..
it would be cool to replace my mid-90's Mexican Jazz bass with one of these :) thank you for a little low end love
Nice!!!!!!!!
Wow, I'm not a bass player (my wife is) but thats a super nice looking instrument man!!
Be nice if this becomes a new line and not anything limited (hopefully not), Fender finally going modern.
That pan knob is the same as a blend pot. I've put one in the bass I've got.
The A machine has the Fender stealth string guide, to help keep the A string seated better in the nut. I guess some times the A string moves out of the nut slot.
You should do a demo of Jack Casady's signature bass, the Pelham blue finish looks so nice
Youre videos are missing ONE thing!!! Measure fret hieght! Love the channel.
I'm not normally a black instrument guy but Texas Tea is definitely the nicest black-ish finish I've ever seen.
Now I want to purchase a bass. Damn you internets!!
Dude, I like your Gibson content, but I absolutely love your fender content. It'd be nice for it to stick!
Agreed
I would love to see some flying V's cause I almost never come across one in sweden cheers :)
HELL YEAH
I hope Fender have fixed the problem with those noiseless pickups (in general - all their noiseless pickups) going open circuit. The lead outs from the upper coils are short, taut and are soldered down almost as soon as they exit the coils. The structure of the pickup is not super rigid, so what happens is that if there is any flexing or shock to the pickup, that lead out wire is stressed and eventually it snaps. Usually it is the wire running to the inside of the coil, so there is no easy fix. I have replaced several sets of noiseless pickup for customers because of this. And what about the infamous 'black fingers' problem with those anodised gold pick guards.
I'm thinking of playing bass it's fun and everybody needs a bassist. :)
if the money's in it for you, I'd love more bass content!
I like the idea of upper fret access. But if you really need why not just get a Neck-Thru?
top tip, try use your pinky instead of your ring finger for fretting, its alot faster and more comfortable when you get use to it
I just bought this bass last week. I have been playing 43 years now. I have never had a bass that was this simple to set up. Bar none. It arrived in disappointing shape. I took all the relief out dropped the saddles and viola! the lowest action I have ever played since a friend bought a new Monarch bass back in 1985. I may bring it back up because while there are no dead spots or buzzing it is just too low to my tastes. I do have to say that the neck carve is thinner than the traditional Jazz bass carve it';s not bad, just different. The pickups and EQ system I'm leaving as an unanswered question. I'll have to wait to declare how it sit's in a live mix with my Ampeg SVP pro with QSC power amp and 10" speaker cabs. It should be fine. Reccomended.
So they have glued on maple cap boards. The binding will mask the joint. Bit odd build feature that they did back in 67 or something like that.
No skunk stripe means its a maple cap neck...a CBS characteristic feature; where's the multimeter reading?
YES DADDY YES
yes
Texas Tea is nice but I dont know if I could get with the neck. I love the 70s neck.
Nice. But,... kinda miss old school Trogly's (before you had a name for us). Was at a guitar shop today and the owner had a killer late 90s 60s reissue burst. Thin binding, 2 piece tiger top, nickel hardware (Nashville bridge?) single ring Klusons and pickguard in case. No holes. I like Fenders too brother but the bridges aren't supposed to float. Much respect. Either way keep it up.
Came off as a bit dickish, love your enthusiasm for guitars whatever you're covering.
You ran the gambet with Gibson. Now your on to fender..... Gretch next?? Ha!
You do a nice job on your attention to quality.... Tx!
What the fuck is a gambet and how do you run one?
The problem with the screw holes is they're drilled into metal which will expand and contract from one moment to another.
I have noise issues with the pickups. When I touch the neck plate and neck the noise decreases a lot lot. What is the reason?
Was the jack plate flush with the body ?
A stunning looking and sounding Bass Guitar, just too many tone options for me, having said that I don’t play Bass Guitar.
Sorry if I missed this point but is this an Ash or Alder body! Whichever it is, it sounds awesome! I wanted to buy one and wanted an ash body. Due to a shortage of ash because of an insect infestation, Fender is only offering ash in their custom soho and master built models. Can’t see spending $4000.00 on what I could just have paid a little over $2000.00 for.
This one is alder. I think all the solid colour models are alder and the natural ones are ash, although they don't seem to be available anymore in natural
The one I played was a c to a d, probably using all the old parts. Still prefer the old elite
how come you stopped getting gear from Sweetwater?
Ace Bass
