40 lb bird seed plastic sacks. One under the rock, tied, the other to glide the wrapped, tied rock across.
I use these two also to slide under the car for oil changes also - no fuss/muss on the shirts.
I’ve been doing a lot of moving big rocks around every year to try and landscape by hand and I’m so thankful for this video. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in doing this without a tractor or even another person at times. Thanks for the tips.
I know - It's like everyone on youtube has a tractor but me :)
Add this in . If you have a snow shovel or a grain bin shovel, they make great sleds to move heavy objects. note: I used grain shovels for years as my snow shovel because they did not overload me when full of even wet snow.
Yes I forgot this one!!!
Great video! This single mom and boulder roller thanks you ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video! That could come in handy someday. I have a bunch of pavers I need to move up two flights of stairs. I'll do it the same way I did last time, I have a slider board, the kind you use to put between two ladders to make sort of a scaffold. I just positioned that on the stairs and then I slid the rocks up on a piece of old carpet. Kind of like your third method, reducing the coefficient of friction. But yeah that wheelbarrow flipped to the side is going to come in handy someday I know it.
I used the wheelbarrow trick thirty years ago while building walls for money. I have an all metal wheelbarrow that is still on the job, a little beat up, as is my back. Thanks for posting. The plastic trick works well for leaves in the fall.
I think you'll find that it's easier to pull a dolly then to push it. When you push it you're pushing down into the ground. When you pull your pulling upwards unweightng the wheels making it easier especially over rough or soft ground.
It is easier to pull a dolly than push it
One more, my favourite moving 'tool', a cardboard box or masonite sheet - move anything/everything with that😁
thanks for this video!
My pleasure!
When you first came on I said I hope he has a dolly lol. My husband was a truck driver for years and brought the dolly home with him. I can't tell you how many rocks I have moved with that thing. No hills in my yard so I pull the dolly. I have tried the wheelbarrow method but that's to heavy since I still have to use my back to lift it up and push. And I can't tell you how many times I've used old sheets to move furniture. Just the other day I put my recliner on its side with a sheet underneath and moved it from one room to the other. Every one I think should invest in buying a dolly when their a gardener. I've even used it to move those heavy bags of peat moss or bales of straw or hay. And even heavy flower pots from one part of my garden to another. Great video!!
Thanks Nora :)
And I've been picking up rocks and loading my wheelbarrow. This is so much better. Thank you.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the tip. Worked great. I'm 68 years old but managed to move about a 200 LB rock.
Nice work!
I used my sons skateboard to move so many things in the house.
TY
Gardening on a rock farm and that's what my raised beds are built with. Thanks for the great tips here! a local body shop friend gifted me an aluminium car hood for skidding big rocks around behind the 4wheeler. Easy on and off!
Excellent suggestion!
Work smarter, not harder! Way to go,Greg.
Thank you Greg! Who knew!? I shared this with my family.
Hey Greg...there is a reason why guys like you (and I) have messed up backs, shoulders, knees, etc., When we where young (you are still youngish to me) we just work through it, grunt a little harder and just overpower what we are moving.
It is the big dog syndrome! Working in construction in the past relied on a lot of brute force and just plain old strength. On todays construction sites there is any number of pieces of equipment to help move/lift/position things and the young guys are smart enough to use them - thankfully!
Your tricks are all just good common sense things that will help prevent people from doing things that may cause them a painful injury!
I have 20 tons of crushed stone coming for my driveway shortly....20 years ago I would have manually spread it with a shovel, rake and wheel barrow...now I have a rented skid steer coming! Save what is left of my back..
.😅😅
Have a great day Greg - really good video!
Mike
I also should have mentioned hiring young people to do it!
@@maritimegardening4887 lol....that is even better!!!
😁
Great ideas here, I have so many big rocks I need to move
Great, thanks! Had my eye on a rock that size on a rocky foreshore wondering how I could move it... you've given me an idea...I think the plastic will work!!! Thanks again:-)
Glad I could help!
Thank you for the wonderful idea to load the stones into wheelbarrow. Good sharing. I learned a lot from you.
Glad it was helpful!
@@maritimegardening4887 Well, this has been an issue to me to move the large rocks. Using your technique using wheelbarrow to move the rocks is fantastic. I save money and at the same time able to solve the big stone issue. This technique is superb! Thank you a lot to you.
Great tips, thanks! Boys moving big rocks with my one-wheeled wheelbarrow broke the wooden handle! I bought a heavier duty two-wheeled one. As we’re on sloped land, sometimes steep, I found two or four wheels is much easier to maneuver
Awesome, great ideas, thanks!
THANK YOU!!!!
Excellent tips, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Many thanks I'm 65 lady trying to move huge rocks!
wow - well be careful and watch your back!
Hah! I was bemoaning the lack of a wheelbarrow or trolley in my arsenal the odd time I needed to move something heavy. That plastic/rope trick is great!
Right on
Warning about dollys, about 4 years ago I bought some welded wire fencing about big roll about 130lbs. I made the mistake of trying to place it on the dolly straight off the back of the truck. It bucked backward and the handle hit me right in the front teeth, broke my front teeth. Lol
Good video
I am 87 and wife is 85, we manage to move what we need moved
And we hurt most every muscle and bone in our body
When I reposition the rock, I reposition the rock onto my finger, LOL 😆 Nothing like a good wheelbarrow
An old scrap bit of plywood, and some logs or the like to act as rollers, is another way. If you have somebody replacing the rollers, you can move something pretty heavy at a fair rate.
Good in principle but impractical or rough/uneven terrain.
@@maritimegardening4887 But more practical for very heavy rocks, if too big for a dolly/wheelbarrow.
I like the dolly idea. Do you ever use fertilizers in your garden????
No, I've never needed to - the mulch keeps the soil rich enough.
You shouldn't bend at the waist when moving heavy objects. Best not to bend at all. It was hard to watch for someone who has serious back issues.
