4:32 is EXACTLY the look I want for my talking heat shots - love the colours of blue and purple together. Wow! Have been using a blue curtain for the moment whilst I grow my channel but want something more professional looking that I don’t have to worry about but I’m less than 3 foot away from the wall cause its a small room. The pop up looks like a great option too. Thank you so much for your advice. Your channel has helped me loads.
A tip I often share on backdrops and cycs is; get some sheet vinyl kitchen or bathroom flooring at a blow-out sale price, off the end of a used roll, or a roll that's not selling well because it's ugly or an unpopular color. What's on the top doesn't matter, since we're using the flat "felt" bottom. I prime this with water-based latex KILZ primer and hang it by thru-bolting it between two 2x4's at one end. I let it hang free to form a natural curve at the floor and, boom; white cyc. It's heavy, not very portable, but durable as heck, washable, you can roll it up somewhat for storage, and, once primed, you can make it chroma green or gray and light it as Caleb does his papers and vinyls. The cost is very reasonable.
Try IKEA roller black out blinds - white/grey/black 8 foot wide and long - great vinyl on an aluminium roll, no crease with mounting brackets and really cheap
You can increase the colour saturation on the white background by turning down the light. Obviously it won’t give the same saturated look as the gray background, but you do get some control.
At our studio we use heavy duty billboard vinyl. You can get a 16x20' piece for around $75 online and it's double sided as white and black plus weather/UV resistant.
Always store vinyl back drops vertically. This is key to avoiding flat spots that are caused by the weight of the roll upon its self. If you store them on horizontally (as Caleb is doing in this video), you will get waves in the roll that are impossible to remove.
I'm currently building my UA-cam studio and this was a huge help for color backgrounds. My studio walls are Swiss Coffee, and I already picked Behr Hush, which is a nice grey. I love the saturation you showed us, really neat. Thank you
So weird I was looking for vinyl backdrops and here you go making a video about it. Good news is google liked your video and presented it to me on my searches. Thank you again for reading my mind and making me spend more money. LOL
I bought a white vinyl window shade at a home store on a whim around 4 months ago for video (won't talk about what I was using in my old videos... haha). Turned out it was good enough and lights similar to how you were describing in the beginning of the video. It has some markings/patterning from being thin/rolled up, but if enough light hits it I don't notice texture in the resulting video. Recently I was able to get more filming space and upgraded my window shade for $15 to get a wider one (now 55" w by 75" h). Though, larger ones than what I use jump up in price a lot. (Edit, I see your vinyl have the same wavy issue when not lit)
Thanks for the video. Very good info, excellent production quality. Would have been nice to see where all the lights were when using the black background - i.e. how you were lighted but the vinyl was not. thanks for sharing.
Thanks! I think you made the price sound scarier than it really is. I was pleasantly surprised. More than paper, but still (probably) affordable (for most.)
I'm using a similar folding backdrop but in green/blue colors - obviously for keying purposes like in my latest overhead camera rig video. Mostly my shots don't include any backdrops - just using the space where I'm shooting at. -Joonas
I just recorded an interview where that popup backdrop would have worked really well. Wish I had seen this video when it first came out. Thanks again, Caleb.
Hi Caleb, I have been using a white cotton sheet for my background, I've got it stretched out along a wall to keep it from wrinkling, but after watching this video, I'm going to check out paper and vinyl. Great video.
Hi Caleb did you say you know the exact paint needed to pain the studio neutral grey? I think that was you. It was a good tip I heard during a live video you did I think.
Would have thought that you would cover and talk about green or blue bg for keying. Have had a portable one like that the last one you showed for almost 10 years - green on one side and blue on the other. Portable key is just as important as a static bg to me.
Thank you so much! I'm trying to start my UA-cam journey and my home and rooms feel too small to use my lighting equipment in. The will work great as a starting point in my garage. Thank youuuuu!
Very professional video and great presentation. I know next to nothing about this, and am quite disappointed with the "cotton muslin" backdrop in blue from ebay, as even with a fabric steamer, the creases just remain. No idea if they will ever go completely, so I will need to edit them out somehow.
Hey man, sorry if you said it and I missed it, but what RGB light are you using to light the background with different colors? I love the color it throws! Thanks
Caleb, this was SO helpful! Thanks very much for posting this and your Channel is brilliant! In the midst of setting up my own home studio (with limited space! Lol!), so your pop up solution will fit the bill! I recently purchased your G85 guide too and I am LOVING this camera...but I wouldn't have gotten so much out of it (so fast), if it weren't for your helpful tips and additional resources...keep up the amazing work and best wishes from Scotland, to you and your family! :)
Thanks Joey! You as well! Been subbed for a little while now. While I have you, do you still think the LG C7 65" is a good HDR TV? My wife and I are looking to get an HDR TV for our ATV and PC gaming.
@@michaelvisuals9472 the Aputure floodlight or any light on their page? Im new to this but really like the look of the color change with the pop up backdrop.
Love this video! Hey where do I get that color changer thing? I have a white vinyl backdrop but didn’t know you could add those colors like that. Does the light have to be in the shot to get that color or no?
Do you have links the the EXACT products you are using in the video? The links in your description are just searches and it's showing things like, "Photo Gray" and "Gray" and...well I guess that's it but I don't know the difference but I DO know that I like what you said about THE backdrops you are using and I DO know that I like how they performed from what I could tell in your video.
What is your opinion about the savage popup backdrop. The reviews on Amazon were not great. 2 star rating was the leading rating. Do you have any alternative popup backdrop brands. Thank you. Great video.
Do you notice any difference in sound (reflection) when you are using paper, or vinyl, compared to fabric backgrounds? I've lined a spare room in moving blankets, and I'm concerned that paper, or vinyl would act like a bare wall with regards to sound. Thanks
Great video, as always, Caleb. Any comments on why Savage products seem to be so expensive and how they may or may not be worth it compared to other similar products on Amazon? I'm thinking specifically of the portable screen.
Not sure if it's me only, but looking at your footage, it seems it's better to aim at 10bits or more color depth with those, I can see the gradient lines behind
Awesome video! I've actually just switched to a gray muslin backdrop. I'm hitting the muslin with a Pergear 960 panel with a half blue CTB and setting my camera at 3200K. This is creating a really nice pop of deep blue. The only set back is that the cloth has to be steamed once in a while, so I may try a vinyl drop next. Also, I noticed that the RGB light you use is no longer being made. Are there and alternatives besides the Youngneo light wand or is that my best bet for popping color into my backgrounds?
Whoa baby, that vinyl gives a heck of a lot more color control. You sold me, again. :) Please give us a link for that rectangular RGB light. We're all dying to check it out.
What RGB lights are you using there? I’m looking for something to use for color that will show up. Even with my main light turned down, the colored lights I have don’t really show up.
I have the same question. Digging on the Tubes, the form factor looks like the APUTURE LS 1/2w Light Storm LED Panel but that's only a bi-color light???
Wow did I watch this 4 days too late. I am using paper and everything you said about the advantages of vinyl is was I was looking for. Btw, what is that great little light over you right shoulder? It looks like 2 of them would be perfect to achieve an nice even backdrop light. I was considering 2 Aputure 300d all but that little panel you are using looks like if might do a better job as a flood solution. Anyway would love to hear back.
thanks for the great info Caleb! One little question: what is the name of the light you are using right behind you? It looks like one from Came-tv but which one?
hey any thoughts on the hook system for backdrops?? i think that might be a better and cheaper alternative but have yet to find a good supplier or brand (the hooks that you attach to your wall and put a 3 paper roll system so you can have a few there) without stands
I just purchased a metal hook that you use for drapes at my hardware store... but, my BG is the Savage 5x7' vinyl. His is a lot wider. Mine is a lot smaller and it is fairly heavy. The inner tube is aluminum and not cardboard so it gives it some weight. So if you want to use hooks, it may not hold as well if you use anything larger as itll be way too heavy.
Side note, not something I usually complain about, but I find this specific music track distracting. You've used it in a few videos now and it always bugs me. A low-fi filter or something might help.
