Because of the depth, it will always sound thin. I changed the head to a black evans head and have the tension maybe finger tight or slightly more to get the most slap/thud sound. Then I still use the inside pad strip and the Tama cover. Maybe you can move the cover to let some air out but that’s the best I could get it. Mic’d up in a smaller venue it will be more punchy than boom.

I know this is old but can you use your own foot pedal with this cocktail set?
Not for this kit. The beater strikes upward on a horizontal plane. But if you wanted to engineer your bass pedal to do that you could.
