A Mexican native with an easygoing manner, dark-eyed intensity, and a lyrical Spanish accent, Ricardo Montalban first gained fame for his “Latin lover” roles opposite 1940s and 1950s stars, such as Cyd Charisse and Esther Williams. Younger audiences know him as Mr. Roarke from Fantasy Island (1978-84) or as Khan from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). Despite these seemingly lightweight roles, Montalban has earned high critical marks for his roles in such films as Battleground (1949) and Sayonara (1957). He also earned an Emmy Award for his role as a Sioux chief in the 1976 television miniseries How the West Was Won. Montalban's unwillingness to succumb to Latin stereotypes led him to found Nosotros (“Us”) in 1973, an organization that focused on improving the depiction of Hispanic performers in the media.
On January 14, 2009, Montalbán died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 88. According to his son-in-law, Gilbert Smith, he died of "complications from advancing age". The precise cause of death was revealed to be congestive heart failure. He is buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Ricardo has been in a few gems, but he is probably one of the most underrated and underused despite his talent of all time.

Always loved Fantasy Island and wished there was a real one to escape to! Mr. Montalban was so talented and made many movies and TV appearances over the years. He played everyone from Indians to Space Aliens. I didn't realize he passed away so many years ago. RIP Ricardo Montalban you were an inspiring original!

I have watched Star Trek The Wrath of Khan 5 times, every 10 yrs. I watch the movie. I have never heard or seen anybody try to imitate his voice. Ricardo accent and they way he spoke, really cool. Good Day All. RIP- Ricardo Montalban

My fantasy right now is to be on that island basking in the sunshine. Loved the Love Boat too ...... and do you remember a show called Love American Style? I wouldn't miss an episode of that one! Ricardo was a great actor. He reminds me of a guy who has really great smelling cologne on 😅Wow, so sad about the horse accident, it's amazing he survived that. RIP to Ricardo his wife and your friend's friend.......btw, I saw that Cindy Williams just died at 75 years old from a brief illness, another great gone. I guess you will probably add her to your long list for another day and time. God bless all!
I dig those old shows. I'm surprised anyone here would recall LAS. Funny how they made shows bk then. Television has changed.
It always surprises me when you show us the grave of an entertainer who I’ve always thought of as highly successful and the grave is a simple square stone set into the earth. I just always expect to see a large, impressive tribute stone.

Very cool Scott. I remembered him more on Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan because my father is science fiction fan. I did not watch Fantasy Island because I was still a little girl but I have seen reruns because I am a rerun queen. Oh yeah I sent you a baby Topher skit if you have not checked it already.
Such is life, one minute a colossus on TV and celluloid, the next you're lost almost invisible among thousands and thousands and thousands, like a little star in the firmament.

I met Ricardo Montalban at a baseball game at Dodger Stadium back in the 70's. I got his autograph and still have it do this day. Truely a really nice man, and a great actor.

As a kid in the 70's and 80's I loved watching Fantasy Island. If I want a quick laugh I watch the Naked Gun scene with him and Leslie Nielsen scene with the Samurai pen.
My dad has a Chrysler New Yorker it was a great car. I love Ricardo Montalban.

@SCOTT ON TAPE - Your Pop Culture Tour Guide Yeah, she worked for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, sold Catholic cemetery plots. Her weekly meetings were every Friday there at the offices. I had no idea that star power that place had until many years later.
I'm surprised you didn't visit the Montalban theater in LA. Not only named after him, he founded the theater company there

I remember watching him in fantasy Island after school and again the love boat. I absolutely loved those 2 programs mum couldn't get me away from either. He was so good in the Chrysler New Yorker commercials. Made them seem seem much more luxurious than they really were. He was perfectly cast for those commercials.

My favorite character of his was Armando the circus owner in Escape from Planet of the Apes. He saved the baby ape of Zira and Cornelius. It was a very heartwarming character if you saw the movie.

Great video Mr. Scott, I'm from Torreón Coahuila 🇲🇽 the City where he grew up, the house where he grew up is still there and it's been well taken care of. Even though he was born in Mexico city he said in some interviews they he felt he was 'Lagunero" (Comarca Lagunera) the region where torreón is. The interesting part of him was that even though he was really famous he used to visit his old friends from school and used to celebrate his wedding anniversaries in that house located on Avenida Colon and Matamoros.

I loved watching Fantasy Island and The Love Boat back to back when I was a kid in the late 70s. It was on Friday or Saturday night. I had an old black and white tv in my room that I could only have on at certain times.
I believe my first introduction to Ricardo Montalban was the Naked Gun films. I enjoy these videos Scott. Thank you for sharing. I'd like to be able to visit some famous graves as well. Not too many here in New England.

He was a great actor. Loved how he spoken. A bit Louis Juordan although he was French his accent was a mixture of different accents come across really nice. But was worth watching anything with both actors in it.
