Always be closing...just like Uncle Larry does. Every time you pick up an instrument it is a song. In addition to all the wisdom and everything else, it is the composition, without fail, that sets you apart and makes your show the best thing going. Your music has the perfect amount of melancholy. Also known as the most/best musical emotion. Complex in the most interesting way. Thanks Tom!
I truly appreciate the "sometimes you get in a little too deep" comment. Given the right context, I'll take some liberties when playing live and almost fall off the tightrope. That "uh oh" feeling is both terrifying and liberating. Always nice when you look out in the audience, and there's that one person who gives that expression that lies somewhere between "I see what you did there" and "you lucky bastard." And then there's those times when you fall, but let's not go there. Thank you as always for the inspiration.
“That look between I see what did and you lucky bastard”, I love that. I always remember the time I blew a note at the start of the first phrase in a solo, dug myself out and decided to make it look like I meant it and went outside on the next phrase. I heard somebody yell “YEAH!”. Encouraged I did my best Richard Thompson for the next 5 bars and brought it home proudly on the last. Back on rhythm I realized the encouraging “Yeah” I heard was sarcasm from my best friend filling in that night on bass when I turned and saw him bent over red faced looking me laughing in tears struggling to say “That was precious” as I realized it probably came off as a drunken Marc Ribot more than Richard Thompson. We still laugh about that 20 years later.
Hey Tom, I’m super excited to hear what your doing with Sarah Jarosz, I’m a big fan. Saw her live a couple times. She’s amazing. That little exploration into composition is so fun and challenging.. would love to see more of that. Cheers
These days I frequently find myself doing guitar faces and im only watching a youtube video. This is the power of the Uncle Larry playing the notes that hit the spot so well. Its like Heineken refreshing the parts other beers dont reach
Uncle Larry, on behalf of many and myself. Thank you very much for the consistent colour, technique, ideas and inspiration you've enlightened us with through your playing the past few years. You help develop a sense of musical perspicacity, which I feel is far more important than any theory itself and the most difficult element of music to teach. Also, that was Kevin Spacey in Glengarry Glen Ross. Awesome movie. Cheers from Ontario Canada my guy
The melancholy just dripped out of my laptop with this jam... what a beautiful sound. And again, the surprising resolve of chords just keep coming. Today I had a day off and played guitar and keyboard all day, and after watching this vid I'm grabbing my guitar again.
One of my favorite bosses made me watch Glengarry Glen Ross, We are still friends and he is from Columbus OH. I took him to see you on The Petty tour when it came to Columbus.
At this point I go ahead and like every Homeskoolin’ video before I even watch them. There's so much to like in every video, and absolutely nothing to dislike. I even look forward to seeing the trading cards. It's actually really cool. Those Double Cut Juniors are kickazz guitars, aren't they? Yeah, definitely. Thanks for checking in on us Uncle Larry, it's much appreciated. I've also followed your buds Guthrie Trapp and Jedd Hughes. Those guys have great channels as well.
Just a random click brought me here! I was mesmerized by the beautiful intro! The beard stroking is geniusly effective for inspiration! Nice start to my day! Thanks!
Yep, just gaining so much from you Uncle Larry as i start to think more like piano to get all those wonderful voicings. Its amazing how it starts to take my playing from mundane to maybe even a tiny bit interesting. Thanks as ever.
What sets your wonderful playing apart from all the rest is the emotion you bring through. You obviously have had quite a few punches in life, and i believe that’s fundamental for growing both as a human and an artist. No story to tell = nothing to listen to. Thanks.
If Tom got together with Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins, and played some of these chord progressions, Billy would come up with some killer melody lines and lyrics to go with it. I believe they could make some great music together.
Your guitar gently weeps....All pun intended. My favorite takes of you are like this, there is soul in that playing, I feel it when you play it, I've seen you live at 3rd. How can Nashville turn that paradise into an apartment parking lot/ apartment complex. - I've watched you since covid. I just love it all- live and at home playing- btw, your home upgrades are awesome, paint color is perfect, (limestone meets taupe) new appliances, glad to see your creating the right space to create in. I completely dig seeing your guitar choices and amp choices along with the pedals you use, we all love seeing the cool toys. You have so much talent and you come across as a real person that's completely down to earth. Take care, get some more rest. You look like your pushing to hard or playing to hard, lol! Don't we all. I used to say sleep was for the dead, lol. Your snippets make my day sometimes! TY for starting this:) its an awesome check in to see what's new.
Once in a while the full-flavor F chord has got to be there. But yeah, thanks for teaching all those alternate F chords that I never thought of before. I hope you're having a rockin' day.
I saw Buck Owens quickly going from a 'C' chord to and 'F' chord back and forth using his thumb and a half barre and it made total sense to me 'cuz a full barre chord would be impossible to use that way... Yes, it's tricky to learn it using the thumb at first...but it's worth the time taken to learn it that way!
One of my favourite, subversive moments in all of music is a deeply weird F chord in the slow section of Van Halen's Panama (tuned down 1/2 step). I think it is a F 13b5 chord (arpeggiate: 1-x-0-2-0-0) , it is amazing, sitting right there in a party tune. VH never played "proper" barre chords.
The man just gives clinic after clinic with mojo. He put in the time and we get to watch. Thank you. My favorite NFL players John Riggins Darrell Green
Glengarry Glen Ross. Although Baldwin’s part is not in the play, it’s my favorite scene. Always Be Closing! Get them to sign on the line which is dotted!
Gotta use the thumb to play big boy chords, no doubt. BTW, just got my Black Home Skoolin and Green Premium Tone shirts from Drew. Very nice- they feel great! Merry Christmas, Tom! 🎄🎸🐶
Hey Tom, I was re-watching the Deer Hunter the other day and I realized for the first time that Rolling Rocks was the drink of choice of the main characters, Robert De Niro specifically ! I couldn’t help but think about our dear sweet uncle all along, man ! Cheers
As a native Detroiter I well know the playing prowess of Dick Butkus. Great player, the kind you wanted on your team. The Lions played him loads of times. Mr. LP looking and sounding great today!
Hey uncle Larry you often talk about prog rock influences like Rutherford, honeyman, yes, Jethro, Tull n Floyd, but who are your influences as far as country stuff? You have such an awesome mix of prog rock , classic rock sprinkled with Nashville flavor it's always made me wonder.
Love the Butkus cards! I’ve lived in Chicago all my life and been a Bears fan all this time. No question he was one of the best middle linebackers ever and he was definitely one of my favorite players. Back in those days you could really get away with playing like an animal and he did. I agree with your F cord strategy it’s much easier to transition and it sounds cleaner. Any advice for someone with a short thumb?

Even the happiest and most upbeat songs can benefit from a touch of melancholy
You did it again Tom. You made me pick up the guitar and just play. You’re so damn good. And inspiring. Thanks for all the good JuJu.
Never have I heard so much emotional expression without words. That speaks more than any words could ever say. Thanks man.

@@SuperBuzz71 Similar in concept to the slow death of silence when a song you wrote gets nothing but blank stares.
@@SuperBuzz71 1:17 😮😊
That progression is so beautifully haunting. I’ve watched this 4 times just to hear the intro over again. Stellar playing as usual Tom..
Glengarry Glen Ross - absolute stonewall favourite of mine. Jack Lemon played that role so well - just so believable

Love the beauty and ferocity you get out of tunes like this! Thanks Uncle Larry!
Your command over tone is a constant inspiration. Appreciate what you do Uncle Larry
Deep thoughts indeed! Love watching your right hand
Bless you, Uncle Larry. We're feeling the guitar-love plus your impartation of wisdoms. May the Force be with you and Clan!
Beautiful, soulful music.
One of a kind UA-cam page! And the VCB is always awesome too. Happy to be a part of it! Thx Funkle Tom!
Dick Butkus was AN ANIMAL....... LOVE watching old video's of football during that era!! GREAT sounds as usual this mornin Uncle!!
One of my favorite bosses made me watch Glengarry Glen Ross, We are still friends and he is from Columbus OH. I took him to see you on The Petty tour when it came to Columbus.
Tom, lost my Grandma Marinell yesterday. Your intro conveyed it all. Thank you.
Sorry for you loss Clay!!
Tom !! You need to put out a solo album with you singing and playing those amazing arrangements!!

That's wild. I've been hung up on F/Dm all day. Love the tone you get with yer fingers. Mark of a true craftsman!
Tom, all your sounds/jaaams are amazing, but there is something about this old LP.... You and old Gibson's have got some flavour man! 😁👍
Yep, just gaining so much from you Uncle Larry as i start to think more like piano to get all those wonderful voicings. Its amazing how it starts to take my playing from mundane to maybe even a tiny bit interesting. Thanks as ever.
ID LOVE TO HAVE THAT 59 JUNIOR!!! SUCH AN INCREDIBLE GUITAR ADN YOU MAKE IT SPEAK SOULFUL WORDS OF EXPRESSION AND TONE. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL PLAYING
Killer tone and playing as usual. And you’ll looking well.
Just like Guitar George, Uncle Larry knows all the chords…
As a science teacher, I couldn't stop looking at that "parts of a plant' poster. Some lessons just never go out of style lol.
F gets a bad wrap, thanks for reminding us how luscious it is when used properly❤️
The intro was hauntingly good. Simply amazing.
Man this one is special. Thanks uncle Larry

Ya huge SP fan- and I hear what you hear.
Absolutely beautiful Uncle La La
That guitar sounds wicked. Awesome improv!
Love the Butkus cards. Favorite player ever!
I love that shade of almost TV orange and
Cripes, that was a nice progression to plunk along... with
Love the past few vids! Great lessons!
I love the chord progression talk. Thanks Larry!
Love the shirt, Music Villa in Bozeman is one of my top 5 guitar stores anywhere. And I've been everywhere man 😎

That’s powerful medicine Uncle Larry
Love these so hard brother!
God damn Larry, your videos just make me happy.
thank you bro...this is the whole point....it's not about what finger goes where...cuz we ALL know the answer to that question.
Enchanting melody over the unnecessary F chord. Truly the ultimate 1/2 package, thanks
Hahaaaaa
Dick Butkus used to be close pined to he spokes of my home made 70's bicycle chopper:)
4:30 and just after that! You destroy with those licks! Thank you!
You are the king of call and response !!! Everything you play makes sense to my ears anyway !! Thanks for the info about coloring cords !!
Glengarry Glen Ross - one of my favorites.
Very beautiful playing!
Coffee is for closers Mr. Buk! Love your playing man and Merry Christmas.
Man, i could listen to you play all day. Always learning something from these videos.
I was waiting for Elizabeth Cook to start singing Thick Georgia Woman over that.
F>Am is one classy tonal migration.
Thanks for sporting the Music Villa t-shirt! Best shop here in Montana.

My favorite from Butkus live mic caption is when he says...."hold 'em up Doug" ...good old number 55 and 51 were a crazy good duo!!!
Very cool stuff to work with in this one, thank you for that Tom! Badass guitar dude. Dayumn
Once in a while the full-flavor F chord has got to be there. But yeah, thanks for teaching all those alternate F chords that I never thought of before. I hope you're having a rockin' day.
"you want to get it so you're barely moving anything"
That intro reminded me of knopler's Brother's in Arms song.... Very rich and complex chords, Uncle Larry!!!! Thanks man!
Glengarry Glen Ross is the movie the quote is from. Great lesson today, Uncle Larry. That 59 is a beauty!
Could be a Trip the Witch tune….another cool skydive Uncle Larry!

Time is never too long with great Uncle larry

My favorite NFL players
John Riggins
Darrell Green
100% Inspiration! Thanks Tom
Glengarry Glen Ross. Although Baldwin’s part is not in the play, it’s my favorite scene. Always Be Closing! Get them to sign on the line which is dotted!
Glengarry Glen Ross - have not seen this for ages, gonna see if it is on one of the platforms - there a whole world of music in the 1st 3 frets!
Gotta use the thumb to play big boy chords, no doubt. BTW, just got my Black Home Skoolin and Green Premium Tone shirts from Drew. Very nice- they feel great! Merry Christmas, Tom! 🎄🎸🐶
Love the shirt. My home state!
Lovely stuff Major Tom.
Those chords at the end.
I'mma have to lurn me some of that, like right NOW !!
No prevaricating ...
Great moment jumping into deep end, good recovery choice, hah. Hello Uncle Larry and happy holidays from St. Pete, FL.
Have a great weekend Uncle Larry. I'm looking forward to your Birthday Party. Much respect...
I like the whole "let's not go there" thing man I just got lost doing that and I'm loving it. Didn't realize how much time just passed
Youre a true gem Tommy , thank you !
I stand by F with the open high E (whatever that makes it) being the best sounding chord.
Uncle Larry Gilmour on that opening Jam🤘🏻
Just stopping by to say hello. I enjoyed your video as always.
Sounds like a winter morning in Cleveland. Another job to do. One more day. Mill might close. Truck’s on it’s last legs.
“Call an old friend”. Good shit uncle
Uncle Larry, those F chords are super necessary 👏.
Sounds amazing! Has a pinback "tres" vibe!
Thanks Larry
that is the greatest video title of all time! Funny stuff, man.
Love the Butkus cards! I’ve lived in Chicago all my life and been a Bears fan all this time. No question he was one of the best middle linebackers ever and he was definitely one of my favorite players. Back in those days you could really get away with playing like an animal and he did. 🤣the look on your face just thinking about the last chord you never played was priceless. It was like premature tonation
this jam feels the most existential to me
I love the Lane Motor Museum. But I blew it on the movie quote.
That double cut is amazing. If I had one of those I'd be as good as Tommy B. for sure
Awesome as always.
Sweet ol uncle Larry. You bailed. Hilarious luv you.
Coffee's for closers only, Larry
Hahaaaa yessss
Cool enough from the session man. Great stuff. Thanks.
Awesome, felt that in my bones.
Hey Larry, thanks for this vid. I needed that jam to get my brain out the funk it was in this morning. Have a good session
