    I tried dozens vanilla boosts and overdrives, but so far nothing beats good ol' MXR 10-band EQ! Hell of a pedal!

      agreed! I run a SD 805 OD in front of my 5150 50w and the 10 band eq in the loop, the eq makes an insane difference, makes the amp go from fire breathing dragon, to Doom Guy

      Ha ha thanks, I just try to put out the best stuff I can and pray that the almighty UA-cam Algorithm Gods deem it worth recommending lol. Also, congrats on the purchase! The VH4 is a beast. I'm sure the 10 band EQ will give it some extra growl and bite to it.

    Great pedal when used in conjunction with a MXR 5150 Overdrive going straight into a super Plexi. I utilize A boss noise gate and to make it even better I’m split off into to two Marshall’s via a boss ch1 chorus For a stereo / wet dry. I personally use a YJM 100 and a 410h Both modded by Jens at Kruse Amplification. Without the Eq pedal I never would get the sound I get. Great Video

    I have that exact MXR 10 band and I've had nothing but trouble with it over the years. Every so often I have to take it apart and clean everything. This most recent time, there would be an odd popping noise only when the pedal was engaged/on. With the pedal off, no noise. Pedal on, popping bullshit. I then noticed two of the LED lights on the bass side were flickering with the pedal off. All of those lights are supposed to turn off except for Volume and Gain when the pedal is off but the first 2 bass dials were still noticeably on but dim. Took all of the LED's out and cleaned the sockets and put them back in. Plugged it in and none of the LED's came on. I then realized they actually do go in the sockets a specific way. The shorter lead goes in the top socket. I put the longer lead in the top originally. After I did this, the wierd dim LED's in the first two dials stopped and just turn off like the rest.
    Never ever had that much of an issue with a pedal except this one. If anyone reading this comment is going to buy this black one second hand or off of ebay...DON'T. Spend more and get the newer silver model with blue LED's.

    Thanx, Dustin; nice demonstration. BTW, it's clipping a lot of the time (it's when the gain and volume lights blink): you must adjust the gain first to your liking, without going into clipping, and then the volume, also avoiding clipping, in any mixing device. Greetings 🎸🎵🎶

    Great pedal. Im about to get one to use with my orange so I can tweak the sound a bit more.

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  2 роки тому

      Yeah this would work very well with an Orange. I find the Orange amps to be a bit harder to dial in for tightness then most other amps simply because they have a naturally fatter sound to them.

    • @MJPGuitar
      @MJPGuitar 2 роки тому

      @@DustinAlford Definitely. I have the tightness issues worked out by using an OCD in the front end. But my issue is that my 212 cab came loaded with the cheap 70/80 Celestions, and they aren’t even close to being broken in. Until I can afford to swap out those speakers for the V types, I figured using the MXR in the loop will be great to dial out/shape some of the piercing high end I’m experiencing.

    You said in your video that with the EQ that you can make sound your marshall like a Mesa Boogie, what setting do you use and you put it before the amp or in the FX loop?

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  Рік тому +2

      I can't remember it's been a long time. I generally try to tame the mids on a Marshall a bit to get it to sound closer to a boogie. A slight scoop in EQ works pretty well.

      @@DustinAlford right on! I currently have the Zakk Wylde overdrive running through the front for that extra push already and it’s great for death metal. I think the eq will help shape it and narrow the tone to a nice deep gut punch. Great video man!

    Does the flashing of the volume and gain sliders mean you are clipping or...?

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  2 роки тому +2

      No, I think it's more of a camera issue not picking up the lights well at 24 frames per second. The lights themselves stay solid when you look at them in real life.

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  2 роки тому +4

      Hey man, I just rechecked the 10 band EQ again. It totally blinks if you do max it out. I'm sure it's a clipping indicator. Sorry to tell you otherwise.

  • @paul_henderson
    @paul_henderson 2 роки тому +1

    You can capture all legendary sounds when plugged into Fx loop. So here's a challenge for you. Since you're Van Halen die hard fan why don't you try dial in and squeeze the tone out using that legendary MXR EQ? With this and I dunno your Mesa or Marshall you can do everything.
    Also try some Eddie's lick so we could hear how close you might get to the original tone. Ofc you could also read a bit about what pedals and amps he used (whatever album era) and use similar ones whatever you got on your pedalboard collection.
    Recently I'm very into reamping and bands tones recreation. Got Valeton GP100 and there's so much to do. A Fractal/Kemper for poor musicians like myself lol

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  2 роки тому +1

      I might just do that, I've thought about doing some videos like that for a while. It'd just take me longer to do because mic placement is super tricky when it comes to getting a close tone to a specific artists.

    • @paul_henderson
      @paul_henderson 2 роки тому

      @@DustinAlford if you've got a mixer, some more mics and some more mic inputs on your usb audio interface then you could record multiple tracks at one take. Bought Superlux condenser mic for 1/3 price, wonder how it'll work vs my old dynamic Shure C606 (has no start to SM57, watched some comparison videos and I was devastated how grumpy it became even though it's a Shure lol)

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  2 роки тому +1

      @@paul_henderson I might have a go at it. Right now I'm completely rebuilding my recording setup at the moment. It'd be cool to see what mics Van Halen used in the past as well.

      @@DustinAlford Yt hates me so much... Pasting this one for the 3rd time. 12:38 With that mid scoop you almost nailed And Justice For All album,. Once again, the MXR is very impressive.
      On EVH mics the rumor says according to some engineer he said Eddie, aside from SM57 also used Sennheiser e609 and or e409. It's just a random quick forum "chase own tail" rambling so I'd be careful, so don't quote me on that :p Just search evh tone vids on yt or google up so there's a tone of info (both official and rumors). Hope it'll lead you somewhere. Good luck with replicating your fav artists sounds!
      Btw there's also a VST called Mic Room by IK Multimedia (Amplitube developers) so it emulates different mics once you record it (you can change cheap mics into something sounding rich and expensive). Not sure how it would work on capturing an amp but why not giving a shot.
      1 more thing. Have you plugged MXR into FX loop or amp front input?

    • @DustinAlford
      @DustinAlford  2 роки тому +1

      @@paul_henderson Thanks for suggesting the vst sounds very helpful. I plug the Mxr in both the front and the fx loop in this video. The front first and the Fx loop section later.

      If I can recall right I think I'm using a Boss Waza craft tuner into a Boss NS-2 to help remove noise from the pedals then it goes into the Amazon Boost which I think I only use on the part where I'm running the 10 band through the FX loop, and then the MXR 10 band into the front until I put it into the FX loop.
