You hit my biggest obstacle: figuring out what to draw or paint.

I think a lot of people run into that one. It can be a struggle at times for sure!

One of my favorite things to do is trying new media. Usually I manage to find something about working with a different material which better informs how I can use my regular choice media.

Yes! That's one of my favorite things to do as well! I almost always go back to my regular materials with a new set of techniques and a different perspective!

You are so right about observation. I also look at everything, haha. I heard you say ‘look with your eyes and don’t look what you think you see.’ First: you are spot on! I would like to add an advice to make this easier, because it is really hard to train your brain like this.
    - Take an image you would like to draw.
    Take a piece of paper.
    Now…
    - Put the image UPSIDE DOWN in front of you.
    - Look at the lines and then draw exactly what you see.
In this way your brain can’t confuse you with memories of how a nose, mouth, flower, tree (etc.) should look.
I used this to learn about faces. My adhd-brain was constantly distracting me and I kept erasing. This simple technique made it a lot easier for me to:-)

      @CautionArtistatPlay  8 місяців тому

Yes! The upside down trick is a good one! It's a great way to train the brain to look at what's really there and not what you expect to be there!

Great points! We took a ride to Newport today for dinner and I found myself observing the colors of the nature we were passing by. “Ooh that really looks like yellow ochre and look at all the colors appearing in the snow” it really does help tremendously when we take the time to observe the nature around us. I love what you said about how you can always win in the comparing game, that resonated! For me, when I stop worrying about creating bad art and embrace the possibilities my skills begin to level up. Sometimes I will even say I’m headed to the studio to play and create some crap, when I get there and sit down, I’m feeling no pressure and things start to flow. Great video!

I hope you enjoyed your dinner! Yes! We see a ton of yellow ochre here this time of year, especially in areas where there isn't a lot of snow cover. I also love looking at all the different colors that reflect off the snow, especially in the shadows! I think life is much more entertaining when you look at it through the eyes of an artist. Things like car rides become much more enchanting!
I often have the same thing happen when I go to the studio just to play! Sometimes, it's good to just let go and see what comes of it! Thank you for watching! 🥰

Shana, this is why I follow you! I love these topics and tips!!!❤ I think this tips are the most valuable for an Artist! or those who want to be, or those are stuck...like me😬. I agree with you that if you follow someone and this discourages you from creating, you should let them following, and I love observing, I thought I was the only weird one who he does that! Sometimes I look closely at people, or something I like... and I stay there for several minutes, and people look at me strangely! 😅 These tips Shana are very useful, and as always, I will follow them! I want to tell you that I bought a book that you recommended, it's called The Complete Harmony Pantone Edition, and The New Artist Manual! I have The complete Color Harmony and I love it, it's very interesting. I'm looking for things to help me in Art, because I have some problems with some mediums, like colored pencils, and mixing them. Now I'm obsess with colors😅 that I love! I will continue in my search to motivate myself and be able to improve my art work! Shana, thank you always for making important contents!❤❤❤

Hi Claritza! I am so glad to hear that I am among like-minded people. I think the fact that we artists stare at people a lot may contribute to the reputation of artists being eccentric! Lol, I'm glad I'm not alone!
I am also obsessed with color! I find it so interesting. I hope you really enjoy the books!
Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you find the tips I share to be useful!!

Another thing which can get in the way is your physical health. When you have to deal with chronic and persistent illness, it can really take it out of you. I have nerve damage, spinal damage and fibromyalgia and it can be a real pain in the butt (literally!!!). Quite often, it can get to be too much and you just have to step back and get away from things for awhile. At the moment, I'm having a bit of a hard time as it's flaring up and making things miserable for me. But, I come onto places like here and other channels to take my mind off it all. I also like buying stuff as well, especially art supplies and stuff for my other pursuits. That makes me feel happier and better. I try to do things in moderation and not push myself too far or hard because that can make things worse. I also try to keep myself occupied so I don't have to think too much about feeling stuffed, but that can be easier said than done sometimes!! Most of all, despite all of it, I try to keep a positive outlook as best as I can. That can be hard at times, but you have to try and stay positive, otherwise you'd end up in a really bad place if you didn't. Art can help with that, as can other similar pursuits and hobbies. Doesn't matter what level you're at, just get into it😊

I am sorry that you have to go through that Carl. It's just terrible. You are right. Physical health is a huge factor when it comes to doing anything really. I am glad that you have found a way to keep a positive attitude throughout your struggles and that you have found some creative ways to keep your mind off things. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Your comment will likely make others in a similar situation feel less alone. I hope that this flare-up passes for you soon and that you can find some relief.

    Great video Shana!! !
I related to the idea of subject/time/supplies limitations....makes it much easier to just get creating.
Also the daily observation of my environment...the colours, shapes and movements of my daily beach walks every morning inspire me no end! ....and .... Spontaneously entered a local drawing competition with a subject and medium I've not looked at before and won first prize! So definitely taking time this week to celebrate a small win. TFS!!
