- I challenge Muslims to answer these questions about the Quran ;
1) Using either the Quran or Sunnah of Muhammad, what are the seven Ahruf the Quran was revealed in?
2) What do the Ahruf apply to? Individual ayah's or entire surahs? Is it all ayahs in the Quran or just some? How do you know?
3) If the Quran was revealed in 7 different modes (Ahruf) - and we aren't able to show all 7 modes today, why doesn't that mean that 85% of the Quran has been lost?
4) Can you show me that Muhammad approved of the different Quran recitations that were canonized by Ibn Mujahid in the 10th century and al-Jazari in the 15th century?
5) Prove to me that all of the 10 different canonized Quran readings are all tawatur and are mass transmitted going back to Muhammad.
6) If the word 'Quran' means recitation - and if the qira'at are different recitations with different arabic words - then why aren't they multiple Qurans?

When asked the Muslim answer to these questions is, we shall see who is right on the day of judgment. My Christian answer to them is: It will be too late and willful ignorance will not be an excuse on the day of judgment.
Every one of these questions can be easily answered, by deflecting to the Bible, throwing scholars under the bus or by, "if you only understood arabic".
If I was a muslim I would be wondering if taking on the west, with the support of the establishment, and media was indicating I have everyone's help, but God's help.

7 (from muhammad) becomes 1 (uthman) then 1 (uthman) becomes 7 (present day). How?
Because the whole history of Islam in the first 200 years is fabricated nonsense.
The Uthmanic codex was written without short vowels (fatha, damma, kasra). Later, short vowels were introduced, but people in other regions did not know exactly where to place those vowels. The words were therefore pronounced differently and also took on a different meaning. This is how the different Qira'at came into being.

There are different ways to say the same thing using different words in languages. Example. In English a person can sit on a couch, sit on a sofa or sit on a chesterfield but they all mean the same thing. However there are also ways to verbally express the exact same single word differently by saying it using a different intonation. Coffee? vs. Coffee! These have a different meaning.
Those are practical examples of two modes in which something can be expressed. It begs the question, what are the other five modes?
No couch and sofa are not the same thing they are two entirely different pieces of furniture, words have inherent meaning you can not swap them at will
What Islamists claim is the equivalent of me traveling to the UK with my heavy NYC accent, saying "hello" and you lot interpreting that as "fought". This is nonsensical. Saying a word with an accent doesn't completely change the meaning of the word. Doesn't matter with what accent you say the word "hello", an English speaker will ALWAYS interpret "hello" as a greeting.

Does all these recitations different in the number of chapters ? Do they say different things ? Do they have different surat ? No they dont, they are the same. The recitation is just a set of rules to how to pronounce a word. Just like the same english word is pronounced differently in America.
One more thing, there are millions of muslims who memorise the whole Quran with all differents recitation modes, and each one have a certificate that contains the chain of narration thzt goes back to the Prophet PBUH. so even if we lose every Quran, we will still manage to write it back in 5 minutes :)
Yes they say different things. Allah even quotes people differently depending which version of quran you read. How can allah be inconsistent?
They are different. Look and see for yourself and while you are at it, ask yourself why for years you were told there was only 1 quran, with not one dot of difference? All of your question can be answered if you go to the prestigious university of Medina, Al-Azhar or Umm Al-Qura. To be fair, your questions are of scholarly academics ofcourse it wouldn't be fair to ask the basic laymen. But if you ask muslim why God is one then that something we might be capable to offer..

1) If you only restrict to the Quran or Sunnah to find the Ahruf, you deny also the companions of the prophet. The Ahruf of the Quran are the arabic dialects of the Quran (like accents in britain depending on where you live).
2) The ahruf apply to the entire Quran, the Quran, look at Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2944
3) The Ahrufs aren't _parts_ of the Quran. The lost ahruf of the Quran aren't 78% of the Quran. The ahruf are modes, not separate parts of the Quran. Is this really hard to understand? Or you want to twist our sources this badly?!
6) The qira'at don't have distinctively different arabic words. It's only a difference in pronouncing for example how much time you say "aaaa" when there's madd, etc. They're not absolute separate versions. So your question is based on a false assumption and is therefore absurd.
4) and 5) need a lot of time for research for just a simple comment on UA-cam. If ever someone has reference for 4) and 5), leave them under the replies.

Official position about harufs is different pronounce of same words: Lamborghini (sounds like guinea pig), or lamborGini (sounds like genie in the lamp).
And qiraat are officially recognised text variants - there is book, collection of differences: different words and meanings contradicting eachother.
But in reality harufs are legend, created in 9th century, about times 200years before, to understand evolution of language: (copying mistakes, text variants, dialects, accents - everything at once).
(Same as "the book" did with legend of sons of Noah, do describe slavery and races, or legend about tower of Babel to rationalize different languages.)
At 9th century there were 7 variants of text: order of words, synonyms, different meaning, in different languages.
At 12th-17th century it will become 10 text variants, later 14 text variants: ways to write, ways to read, own meaning, own text, and 37 nowadays.
Separate schools of preservation that collect their own mistakes, in different languages, it slowly becomes different texts, because they all work with already dead language to them. As Shakespeare's thou, thee, art...

Ahruf is more of a dialect in simple terms.
Qiraat is a style or way of recitation. Thus the word Qari (reciter) having similar sound comes from.
So, if I was to come up with a seemingly plausible argument disproving The Bible: Would that mean "the Bible was finished"? Would my argument (even if actually true) make the slightest difference to the millions of Bible believing Christians? Of course it wouldn't.
If they made the same ludicrous claims for the Bible that Muslims make for the Quran then yes it would mean the Bible was finished. but they don't.
Qu'ran is the filter to understand the previous scriptures (that according to modern dawah we don't even have). But we need the hadiths to understand the Qu'ran. And we need the tafsirs to understand the hadiths. And we need the muftis and imams and scholars and sheiks and clerics to understand the tafsirs and the hadiths. And we must learn Arabic. Am I missing something?

Qirat is different.
The Holy Quran was revealed to Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) in seven Ahruf, dialects.
Qirat refers to the method of pronunciation used in the Quran recitations (tajweed) and are different from the 7 styles of Quran recitation (Ahruf).
The seven dialects belong to the seven tribes mentioned in last message.
The wisdom behind this was to make Quran recitation and memorization easier for the local tribes who speak Arabic differently.
These seven dialects were reduced to one, that of the Quraysh, during the rule of third caliph Uthman ibn Affan (RA) since variant styles of readings had the potential to cause divisions among Muslim ummah.
All of the seven modes of recitation are based on this dialect.

Seven Ahruf refer to the seven dialect (lughat): Quraysh, Hudhayl, Tamim, Khawazin, Thaqif, Kinanah and Yaman. Seven ahruf refer to seven ways of recitation (lahajat) such that words are replaced by their synonyms.
Ahruf have the EXACT meaning but different wording.
Because the meanings are the same.. it makes your argument non-sencicle.
The quran and its message have been preserved and its meaning/message, whichever language or dialect, has never changed..
So explain these different words which have entirely different meanings:
1. Hafs: hum `ibadu l-rahmani (they are slaves of the Most Gracious) 43:19
Warsh: hum `inda l-rahmani (they are with the Most Gracious)
The middle letter of the middle word is different in these verses. This changes the meaning of these words significantly: In the Hafs qira'a the word is a noun and means slaves while in the Warsh qira'a the word is a preposition and means with. Thus, the verses have a different meaning.
2. Hafs: yakdhibuuna (they lie) 2:10
Warsh: yukadhdhibuuna (they were lied to (or) they deny) 2:9
There are different vowels on the first and second letters of these words. The Hafs qira'a is a 1st form of the verb, while the Warsh qira'a is a 2nd form either active or passive. (Note: this word appears twice in this verse.)
3. Hafs: sihraani (two works of magic) 28:48
Warsh: saahiraani (two magicians) 28:48
There are different vowels on the first two letters of these words. These change the word from an active participle in the Hafs qira'a to a noun in the Warsh and thus changes the meaning of the verse.
4. Hafs: qatala (And many a prophet fought (qatala)) 3:146
Warsh: qutila (And many a prophet was killed (qutila)) 3:146.
There are different vowels in these words. These change the meaning from the active to the passive and thus changes the meaning of the verse.

No, the different verses I cited have different MEANINGS. This arises because of different consonants and verbal conjugations.
As a language teacher I know that different grammar changes meaning because words change.
So in Sahih Bukhari 4987, where it says:
Uthman said to the three Quraishi men, "In case you disagree with Zaid bin Thabit on any point in the Qur'an, then write it in the dialect of Quraish, the Qur'an was revealed in their tongue."
Did Uthman simply forget that the Quran was revealed in 6 other tongues other than the Quraysh? Or did he not know that there are seven Ahruf at all?

For example, in the Quran, the word wahidun means two, but Muslims say that the word wahidun means one.
According to the Quran, there are only two gods in the universe, their names are Jibril and Mikayl.
Therefore ilahun wahidun is used in the sense of two gods
first of all the Quran was written in very ancient Arabic so it’s hard to get the exact translation. second there is only one god which is God, or Allah in Arabic. Most Christians forget that the Quran is originally transmitted orally which meant it is memorized. Meaning the Ahruf were given in lump sum by the Prophet to the memoriser. In actuality, muslim can read the Quran using any of the 7 ahruf. From that ahruf the reciter can choose any of the 10 qiraat/stlye. The book form quran we have now is the standardization of what is chosen by their individual regional scholar to be the easiest ahruf and qiraat for the masses. So no, in the memories of the established Qiraa' (reciters and memoriser) there is ONE Quran with all the ahruf in his mind. I think this whole misunderstanding took place when Christians think and analyse ONLY the book form.

Hello there! The Quran is independent of hadiths. You contradict your own point by trying to use the hadiths to judge the Quran and its contents. The hadiths are stories told about certain rules and Islamic rituals, but they are not by any means authoritative but rather suggestions. The Quran according to Muslims is the word of God that was revealed to Muhammad through an archangel, generally believed to be Gabriel. The hadiths have to be proven by Quranic verses. One cannot interpret the Quran using the hadiths, but these stories told by early Muslims, have to be examined and proven by the Quran itself. if they are found to be valid through the multi-stepped and meticulous method, they can be used to help understand some points in the Quran. they are in practice, general guidelines to the better understanding of Quranic verses. According to some Muslim scholars, the Quran does not need interpretation, but rather clarification. But even the most trusted hadiths have sometimes been disqualified by some scholars as the hadiths are not the result of divine revelation, but stories passed down from early Muslims, such as companions of the prophet. Because of this, for all we know, all hadiths could be wrong theoretically, and is best to review them as our understanding of certain things may change with the rapidly changing knowledge of modern man. However, this in itself is debated amongst different scholars. So, back to the video, to try to judge Islam by hadiths is absolutely and fundamentally flawed because as it has been already mentioned, hadiths are not divine revelation. There is also something known as "The Tradition of the Prophet". The Tradition of the prophet is a ritual or rule that must mentioned explicitly in the Quran itself, but the details of how the ritual should be practiced, are to be determined by how the prophet of Islam performed the ritual, and there has to be absolute consensus amongst all Islamic scholars of different sects as to the practice of the ritual by the Prophet. An example of this is the five daily prayers, the time for each prayer time has been determined by the Quran, but exactly how the sequence of the prayer should go has been passed down from the prophet through his Tradition.

Simple the Quran came in only 1 recitation. There is no where in the Quran that it said it came in different forms, recitaions or anything of such. Those are inovations (Bihda). All the hadiths about ahrouf are not historical but are what historians would term exegisis in disguise of verse 15:87.
The Quran comes from the syriac original Qeryan and means a book of Liturgy and the seven ”pairs” are connected to liturgy and not some dialects or ahrouf.

Islam is: believing in One and Only God called Allah, Who is the God of Abraham, Isac, Jacob, Moses, Jesus way back to all prophets of God Almighty. We believe that He is One and Only. God sent down books, like Torah of Moses, Injeel of Jesus, the last book of Him is Quran. Muhammed is His last prophet. We believe in the angels, we believe in the Hereafter. We believe in Heaven and Hell. We believe in Free Will. We believe in Predestination and that everything that happens is written in the Book before human kind was created. Those are dialects. To reach a wider base in Arabia, the Quran was revealed to Muhammad (pbuh)in 7 dialects. It was when he died that his dialect was the basis for the Quran.
Look at your reasoning.

Question 1: From statenent (1) it follows that if the quran was to go the wider world it will have to take other languages for easier memorization by non arabs. If your God can make different dialetes for only arabs to easily memorize the qurans why not make it in different dialetes of different languages to make easier for everyone to memorize it?
Question 2: Did Allah or the prophet permit the reduction of the quran to his dialete. If the owner of a book does not permit this, is this not a "corruption" of the book?

You are correct that the companions decided to make the official dialect of the Quran in the Prophet's dialect. This was done a few years after he passed under the rule of Abu Bakar. Since a dialect is a specific language, it only makes sense that the Prophet's dialect was chosen as basis for the Quran. It was the first dialect revealed to him when revelation came down from God thru the angel Gabriel. The others came after that.
Sp what is your issue? That the other 6 dialects were more authentic than the 7th? That they said something different? That some thing was lost? That due to this the Quran is corrupted?
If you feel that way, look at your Bible. Is any of the Bible the Word of God in the language which the Prophets spoke? Yes? The awnser is NO.

Trust me we can answer all of them..your questions is flawed, assuming that the variants include "different words" thus "different Qurans"....no one should waste time with this...we have the Quran being preserved through a phenomenon knows as mass oral narration. Just like we have Jack and Jill or twinkle twinkle little star...they may exist variants of these nursery rhymes..a word change here and there, a tense change in verb an inflection etc, and it will only add texture, enhancements, richness in the meaning but wouldn't take away from the majority memorised and absolute nursery rhyme that the English world agrees upon. 1. What happened to the hafiz or oral reciters when Uthaman compiled his own quran? Did they abandon the previous memorisation and then had to recite the new uthamnic codex or they just stuck with their old recitation. If it's the latter, then we have a problem has we would have varying quran contents--one in the written quran and another amongs the oral reciters
2. If the hafiz had done a great job in memorising the quran and it's been passed down succicntly from generations to generations then why did it take 17 years to compile the first standardized quran? It should have been easy as picking a hundred hafiz kids and asking them to recite the quran while its written down.
3. And no, you fail to understand that the first book written about Jesus was done so in 40 AD. And the first bible, a compilation of both the OT (Remember the OT already existed in scrolls way before the time of Jesus) and NT were done so only after the Christains had the power and resources to embark on such a project in 3AD. Before then, the christains were a powerless and highly persecuted group of people and so they were financially uncapable of embarking on the very complex project of compiling the bible--A project that was ambiguously daunting dynamic in style and financially burdensome. So the 3 century and 4 century when Christianity flourished was when the christians had the power and influence to compile together the bible.
4. Finally, your hadiths came 200+ years about muhammed and yet you muslims follow it. Be careful now not throw stones into your glass houses.
Allow me to answer these questions
1. There's difference of opinion about what they exactly are. But, we can take some good indications.
> The Prophet (ﷺ) was present at the pool of Banu Ghifar, Gabriel came to him and said: "Allah has commanded you to make your community read (the Qur'an) in one harf. He (the Prophet) said: 'I beg Allah His pardon and forgiveness; my community has not strength to do so'. He then came for the second time and told him the same thing till he reached up to seven harfs. Finally, he said: 'Allah has commanded you to make your community read (the Qur'an) in seven harfs; in whichever harf they read, that will be correct.
They are generally understood as seven "ways" or "variants" that Allah revealed of the Quran to make it easier for people to remember and read. They also have the added benefit of giving extra meaning.
2. Applies to the Quran as a whole. Includes the verses because that's what the Quran is made of. As for all the verses, I have not heard of that.
3. As the angel Jibril said, "in whichever harf they read, that will be correct." The seven ahruf were sent as an extra crutch to make it easy for the Muslims. They are not sent as a burden that we need to preserve every harf to preserve the Quran. That would defeat the purpose. We only need one recitation of the Quran for it to be preserved and for us to get all the needed message and laws.
Before understanding the next questions, you have to understand the link between the ahruf and the recitations or qiraat that were canonized later. The reciters of the Quran understood the above statement of Jibril in the sense that they were allowed to choose between the ahruf and what to recite. They would choose between what they learned from their teachers. So, the choices of scholars were called "recitations." There were many recitations, and people ultimately settled on the number 10 most authentic and well-transmitted qiraat.
4. Each of the chosen 10 recitations has a chain of narration back to the Prophet (SAW). Obviously, since the whole recitation was chosen later, the whole specifically wouldn't have been approved by the Prophet, but every choice of that recitation would have been taught by the Prophet since they were only choosing between choices that their teachers had taught them who had learned from the Prophet (SAW).
5. Each of the recitations is authentic with a strong chain back to the Prophet (SAW), and they agree the vast majority of the time, so what they agree on is clearly mutawatir since it's confirmed by 10 chains from different lands. As for individual recitations, they are mutawatir, but some scholars have argued they are individually authentic not mutawatir. There's no problem in that. But, the evidence for them being mutawatir is that each of the recitations represent a larger tradition in their province being recited by hundreds of people. They aren't alone.
6. Quran is the name of a specific book. That book has been given in different ahruf by Allah. It's a basic mistake to confuse a name for a linguistic root meaning. The Quran in this context is being used as a name not in the meaning of recitation.
Also allow me to explain qiraat:
Allah revealed the Quran in seven different ahruf. An ahruf is basically a variation that Allah allowed in the Quran. It could be a small change in wording, small change in sentence structure, different vocabulary, different pronunciations of the same words, etc. This was done so that the Arabs at the time who had different dialects of Arabic would have an easier time memorizing the Quran.
So, Allah gave seven of these variations to the Prophet (SAW), and the Prophet (SAW) taught different ahruf to different companions. He also taught them that however way they recite the Quran using these variations, they would be fine and it would be the Quran. That is part of how Allah made the Quran miraculous.
In the time of Uthman (RA), he gathered the reciters of the Quran from the Sahabah and had them compile a mushaf (written text) of the Quran according to one recitation/harf. Some of the variations in the ahruf (like change in wording or sentence structure) were incompatible with the mushaf so people stopped using those variations. They followed the harf of the mushaf whenever there was only one variation possible. But, still some variations of the other ahruf remained possible because Uthman (RA)'s mushaf did not have dots or diacritics written. So, there was some leeway in it to provide for a few different variations.
According to the ahruf taught by the Prophet (SAW) to the Sahabah and following the mushaf of Uthman (RA), there emerged 10 major mutawatir recitations using the variations of the Quran in different ways while conforming to the mushaf of Uthman (RA).
Mutawatir means "mass-transmitted." It refers to something that was learned and taught by so many people from each generation that it is impossible for it to be made up or have a mistake in it. We make sure the Quran is mutawatir because that means there is no possibility or doubt of error in it at all.These 10 mutawatir recitations ("recitation" in Arabic is "Qira'a" or plural "Qiraa'aat") that were specialized in by an Imam of each. Each of those Imams had two major students who transmitted from them ("transmission" in Arabic is "riwayah" or plural "riwayaat").
So, in total, there are 10x2=20 major riwayaat of the Quran. The common recitation people have these days is the transmission of Hafs from Imam Aasim. Another recitation common in some parts of Africa is the transmission of Warsh from Imam Nafi'. But, all 20 transmissions are well preserved and they are all mass-transmitted so we know for sure they all come from the original teachings of the Prophet (SAW) who received the seven Ahruf from Allah.
