Matt could you go over when to flare elbows during a sticking point when benching
Or do you already have a few videos I can watch that mention that go over the flare during stick point ? Thank you
A small arch definitely puts your shoulders in a better position, I could barely get two reps of 135 with a flat back and I managed 5 with relative ease once I arched even though my range of motion didn't change by more than an inch or so. Between a certain point it's simply what makes your press most effective.
135 lb or kg
@@Light-jr6yf lbs I think if your bench is 135 kg u dont need advice
@@ranvirojha3441 not necessarily
@@Light-jr6yf necessarily
@@alang4902 no because I see many lifters who still get advice
First of all. I think it’s awesome that you’re mixing in a few of these longer and more detailed videos together with the already great shorts. Really solid info!
I would love if you could touch on knee valgus or knee cave in the squat. Been lifting for close to 2 years now and for the majority of that time I was always trying to eliminate knee cave completely from my form since it seems most channels on here say that the knees should always track the same direction as the feet as much as possible and that knee cave is less efficient and it means you’ve got weak points to work on.
Last 6 months or so I’ve just decided “fuck it” and stopped trying to fix my slight cave. It feels so much better for me to hit depth with knees in line with feet and then let them slightly cave in right as I bounce out. When I reach the sticking point like 10cm up I then push my knees out again in line with the feet.
The cave is pretty minor and I feel like I get a lot more power that way from the hole and when I hit the sticking point I can push the knees out and get past it much easier than if I stayed fully open in the hole and didn’t let the knees cave in at all. Something that I can do if I want, but then I’m probably down to a max of 165kg instead of a 180kg that I hit with the slight caving.
I see a lot of weightlifters do this. Both when cleaning but also when back squatting. Someone like Lu Xiaojun has a squat similar to how mine looks in the sense of knees caving in and then pushed out. I have a wider stance though and squat mainly low bar.
Long comment, but would love to hear if you agree with what I see on UA-cam that knee valgus is bad, or if it can be beneficial for strength. I have no issues with pain doing it either way. Just weaker with no cave.
He actually did a video on this, knee cave gets a bad rep when all it really is is load management, your hip flexors are moving into a position that is most efficient for moving weight, as long as ur not just slamming ur knees towards eachother ur probably fine
possibly the most impactful video ive watched on bench technique, i had never understood how to implement legdrive before not realizing the importance of weighing on the traps
I am loving these long videos keep em up man
Thanks, Matt. I've started utilizing some of your tips and I've already made a solid bit of progress very recently.
Thanks man. I've been trying to find the right qeues for setting up my bench. Felt solid.
You just answered my in todays PODCAST.........THANKYOU ‼💪🏋️♂️📚🙏🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
another tip for sliding on the bench. you can go buy cabinet liner for about $1 at most places! i bring that everywhere at the gym. this tip is actually from alan thrall
Keep up the goood work matttttttt . Really means a lot
Would love a video on squat stance width and squatting in flats vs lifters :)
awesome video!
could you do a video on an appropriate rack height for the bench press.
Hey Matt, any chance you could talk in depth about lifting equipment, including your recommendations for different brands and so on? Thanks, be well.
rounded back (even low back) deadlifts
The people who have that tiny range of motion are always lower weight classes. It’s because all weight classes have the same rules for grip width and the lower weight classes are more likely to have shorter arms. So, imo, the issue is grip width rules, not arch rules
Honestly, I think if they just made it so there's only self lift off, the issue would resolve itself. A lot of those lifters wouldn't be able to use as wide a grip in this instance.
Can you elaborate on the supplemental exercises you use for bench pressing? I currently mix close grip bench, flat bench dumbbell presses and incline dumbbell presses for my two chest days. I think I should add dips, but I'd like to get your perspective.
Weighted dips and OHP will increase you bench press
Can you explain Daiki Kodama's double pause technique?
Hi Matt, I was a supporter of the arch already and I loved the video, unluckily I'm not flexible enough to get a good arch (which means I'm less stable on the bench) do you have any advice for that?
You know that you can become more flexible right?
@@manuel8617 yes, just wondering how
@@manuel8617 Condescending answer to a genuine question. Try getting out more. It's beautiful outside
Any suggestions to get bigger arch?
Hey super thanks for the explanation. I was wondering about this for a long time.
However, how bad is it, when my glutes don´t touch the bench? I have the feeling all then benches in my gym are too low and I tend to compensate this by lifting my behind a bit too much. Is contact of the rear mandatory or can I continue benching?
Many thanks!
In competition, your butt must stay on the bench.
What kind of bench do you have? Thanks!
Hansu power.
So when I just do tap and Go, I don’t typically arch… However if I’m doing a pause bench, I always arch… but that’s just me
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I like this tutorial format much better, because I hate that AI computer generated or pre-recorded human voice.
One dude at my gym doesn't arch and instead puts his feet on the bench.
No clue if that helps or doesn't.
He's pretty strong though.
This variation is actually harder to do since you're basically eliminating the leg drive.
Pure chest power. No leg drive
Your place is so weird. There's a basement feel to it with the window in line with the ceiling tiles, but now we can see outside that it's not.
It actually is a basement sort of. Property is on a hill. So front side is “1st floor” but back side is fully underground basement
