If you hit too hard at the start, you can crush the grommet sideway. It's not good. I only hit the grommet hard at the end to finish the roll and tighten it on the material.

The grommet press will avoid shock waves created by the hammering for making the roll. You will also get a better control how thigh your grommet is. I would suggest you place a rubber washer between both part of the grommet and the acrylic if you can. It will reduce the pressure applied on the acrylic sheet. Just think tightening a bolt on a toilet bowl. Too much pressure and it will crack.
Good idea burning the hole then the edge will be stronger. I could do with one of those kits for my tea towels. Cheers.
