5 years later want you to know the first minute and a half of this video was more helpful and informative than any other videos I’ve watched! Thank you!
Hi, I just wanted to let you know that this video saved my life. I'm in theatre rehearsal right now and I'm stage managing for a show. We have to put grommets on some fabric and I had no idea how to do it. Me and my fellow company members watched 10 other videos, reread instructions a million times and cried. We have multiple eyelets absolutely destroyed from improper use. You're video was amazing. 10 out of 10. Amazing commentary. Very professional looking. And honestly thankyou. We spent two hours doing this after school in a high-school theatre shop for free. Thanks to you a rehearsal didn't go to waste. You're my hero I'm gonna subscribe for future tutorials. Love you. Xoxo. P.s Happy Valetnines Day ❤ Hope you have a great life 👍
Well!! This is so helpful to know what the range of options are. I had no idea. Thanks so much for taking the time to spell this out in such a clear way.
thankyou...was just about to use eyelets on wrong size anvil which came with eyelets too small to go through leather, maybe try cutting flanges in eyelet and give it a hit and see what happens.. can't keep buying different setting tools. Thanks for explaining, great to actually see what is supposed to happen.
This guy gets an EXTRA upvote (not really because I can only vote ONCE 😁) for telling the difference between scored and rolled rim eyelets! Most people don't! Great tutorial! How could ANYONE possibly give this a downvote? I wish downvoters had to explain themselves! Must be competitors :-)!
I had been looking for the answer to what I thought was a simple question, what is the difference between an eyelet and a grommet for about an hour, when I came across your video. Your explanation was so clear and informative! Thank you so much! I appreciate your straightforward approach. I finally understand! My only question to you sir is, will you or have you already done another video on how to install a grommet? In your video you do say that you mostly work with eyelets, but now I need another video demonstration from YOU about grommets! 😁 Maybe in the future? Thanks again for the straightforward answer to my straightforward question! ☮️
This video should have more likes! This helped me a lot! It´s like for beginners, and I am new to these two items! It´s the only one I found online that explains the differences between eyelets and grommets and how to use them. Though I would have liked to see an actual eyelet being set as you did with the grommets. Well done and many thanks! 🙏🏾 You just got a new subscriber to your already many subscribers.
I've been trying to find the difference between grommets and eyelet for weeks. Thank you for the vocabulary. That's so clear in my mind now! Could you explain how to use a washer? Is it with a rolled rim or scored eyelet? Thank you.
It would use a rolled rim type barrel. You're not simply adding a washer to an eyelet, you purchase grommets as sets so that you have washers that fit exactly onto the barrels.
Exactly the info I was looking for ! I bought some awhile back and just opened them now and was wondering why there was no 2nd piece (washer pieces). I bought them from a leather store so now I know they are eyelets (one piece)for leather ! I’ll need to get grommets (2 piece) for thin material ! Thanks for info !
I recently found a box that had some eyelets and grommets inside! Now thanks to your video I konw the difference! thank you! some of the eyelets are scored.. they are tiny! the former owner also left an eyelet "plier" I guess it is called but maybe I dont know how to use it correctly or it doesn't really want to work on those eyelets.. and no anvil or tools for the grommets.. I hate to throw them out. I could use them. I am not sure how to get the right tool for these eyelets and grommet .. I guess look for a Tandy Leather shop? sounds like they will all need their own "sitting" tools since they are different sizes? The great thing about finding it is now I can think of so many things to use them for! Thanks again!
Glad it helped! Yes, you'll have to locate a matching anvil. If the eyelts exist, then an anvil for them also exists. Take accurate measurements of the flare and the barrel diameter and use that in your search. Another option to Tandy is Springfield Leather.
I’m about to set the eyelets on eleven knife sheaths and I see you are using a rawhide mallet and I just happen to have one from high school , nice video and thanks. I was setting the eyelets with a hammer and they started splitting but I think the mallet is the answer
That last one you did just to show me how I'm doing it. I know it's wrong, that's why I'm here. Salt in the wound buddy. Like Nancy, I have a huge stash of rivets, eyelets, grommets, snaps, punches, anvils, setting tools and a pair of tools like you used in the wood, but the pin on mine is spring loaded and goes flat. any hints for that? The other part is the same as yours. I put it in a vice (vise?) to hold it. Thanks for the clarity!
Very clear and helpful vid, thank you very much! I was searching on UA-cam for how to reinforce holes for new thread on a leather saxophone neckstrap that has no holes yet. Grommets will be the best for that given the fact that they are smooth on either side. Is it necessary to use a (wooden) mallet? Will steel damage the tools?
A500 is the part number engraved both the drive and anvil. If I remember correctly (it was a long time ago) it came from Siska, the same company that makes the eyelets.
Great video, Matt. I learned a lot. Like everyone else in the comments, I appreciate knowing the difference between a grommet and an eyelet. I am making pannier bags for my bicycle and I'd like to add in a few grommets. Could you recommend any brands you prefer for the tools and grommets?
Thanks. You may want to check locally, otherwise there's plenty of vendors, Tandy, Weaver Leather, Springfield Leather all sell about the same hardware and tools.
Can you recommend good tools for this. I picked up a grommet kit from Harbor Freight to install into tarps and possibly leather and it turns out horrible, deformed.
Where do you get the larger eyelets and grommets? I have Redwing work boots. They came with speed laces which I removed. The thickness of the leather is like two of the leather pieces you use in the demonstration. I would prefer grommets. I ordered a few kits but I dont really understand how they're measured. I keep getting grommets and eyelets that are too thin and too small in diameter. I have all kinds of punches but too small. On my old Redwing boots I used two eyelets per hole. So I would do the one then from the other side put an eyelet in and crimp it inside that one to hold it in place. Eventually they fall out. These new boots I bought are even thicker and the eyelets fall out after a day of use cause they're not anywhere close to making it through the leather.
Not sure how to set a grommet- does it matter which way round the washer goes (ones I saw are not flat) also is there any deviation to the setting method? I saw some people tilt the tool in a circular shape as they pound it.
I want to replace the hooks in my work boots with eyelets. What would you recommend that would last under the pressure of being tied up tight every day? I don't care how it looks, as long as it is functional.
A scored eyelet is probably the best for a boot lace, but the rolled rims will work too. In either case, as long as you have the correct size holes for the eyelets, they'll hold just fine. Removing the hooks without damaging the leather will be the hardest part. Practice inserting new eyelets on scraps before you work the boots.
Thank you for this, I really learned something, been having trouble trying to set an eyelet just on thin cardboard , the eyelet only set in one side! It’s strange
Where on earth do you buy extra deep eyelets/grommets? Like if you have a real thick piece of leather and the 4mm ones from Amazon aren't deep enough? There only appears to be one size sold.
Grrrr. I bought a kit which has the right size anvil but clearly a swaging tool that is way too small - and it took this video to explain why my eyelets end up looking like dogsh1t :(

I completely agree!. I watched waay too many videos and researched on sewing sites only for this to completely solve my mystery.
This video here is exactly what 20 videos failed to provide. Thank you for the straight to the point solution and explanation.

That is so great to hear, glad it helped you out in your production! I appreciate your positive feedback
This is so genuine and pure
You have a pleasant, mature teaching style. Good job.
You are the only person who has explained the difference between these two things. I’ve been searching for that answer for days. THANK YOU!!!!
Thanks!
Another mystery solved due to a good teacher. Thank you.
Thanks for watching, glad you found it helpful.
I'm only two videos in and have already learned a lot. Very straight forward, informative and no extra junk to fast forward through. Thank you.
Thanks, Sean!

awesome explanatory video Matt. I've had eyelets & grommets in my stash for a while and had no idea how to set them, until now. Thanks for sharing!
Happy you found it useful, Nancy.

Clear instructions! Thank you. Where can I get the tool you are using to install these? I mean the one that you hit with the mallet
That's awesome! Thanks! I was trying to figure out how to balance the bigger anvil, so mystery solved.
Thaks man. This answered all my question unlike the last 10 videos (maybe more like 7 or 8) which completely sucked.
Thanks a lot for sharing this video! It is very useful also for the specific terminology (I'm an Italian native speaker)
Where do you get your grommets and eyelets?
A good store to use is BuckleGuy.
@@leatherpunk thanks! Merry Christmas!

So the grommet tool I just bought at harbor freight is a eyelet tool or at least only eyelets came with it.

The mallet I use weighs less than 16 oz. The wooden hammer would be better than a metal hammer, but I would practice a few times first.
@@leatherpunk Ok, thanks for your answer.

Very good explained clearly at last thank you
Thank you
Very good video has been very helpful. I can buy it on Amazon, how can I find it? thanks
Nice video, although some mega-closeups of what is happening as the hammer descends would be nice
A good teacher, but videography could definitely use some help!
What’s the best type hammer for eyelets/grommets ? Is yours a wood or leather hammer ?
Its a 12 oz rawhide mallet.
Which can go inside of a patch so that a lace can go thru it?
I would just use a scored eyelet for that.
very helpful, thanks!
Thanks, Ezra!

What is used for shoe lace holes....eyelets or grommets?
Eyelets are the preferred component for lacing.
Hi why when i use eyelets pliers do my eyelets come out creased or crushed???
I'm not sure without seeing what you're doing, sorry, but might not be the right size.
Can these be used for creating something with moveable joints,
like arms a legs? If not do you know the name of that?
Can you recommend good tools for this. I picked up a grommet kit from Harbor Freight to install into tarps and possibly leather and it turns out horrible, deformed.
Tandy leather, springfield leather, any of those. Harbor Freight tools are not at all suited for leather work.

Where do you get your rolled rim eyelets?
If you just need a few, go to Tandy.

how about to set the geommet/eyelet to the hat?

You want the washer seated so the rim is downward. Yes, you can angle the setter as you go, it's just another way to make sure it's evenly set.
so you are putting the "scored eyelet" to the top and not the back?
If I'm understanding you correctly, both types of eyelets are set the same way on the same side of the leather
Where you buy accessories
You mean tools? Try Tandy leather.

There are some limits. But even a heavy 12 oz leather, you should be able to find long barrel eyelets somewhere. Check with Tandy.
