Dealing with DELAYS | Underfloor Heating Prep - Portugal Property Renovation

  • Our focus for the first quarter of the year has been getting our underfloor heating installed and the final layer of the limecrete floor laid. Unfortunately, we've had a number of delays with getting parts on site for the underfloor heating manifold. So instead of waiting around, there's more prep work to be done and some new materials to experiment with.
Join us for another couple of days on the renovation of our Portuguese farmhouse and see what we get up to.

Love the cable tie anchors. Not doing any wiring or plumbing but I'm sure I need to order some of these. It may seem trivial but sitting your plastics (tubing, Chicken netting, wire) in the bright sun for a time will make it just a little more manageable. Managing anything plastic from a roll can be more difficult than herding cats. Thanks again for all the work you put into your channel and good luck with the plumbing supplies!

It never ceases to impress me how structured and disciplined you approach your projects.
Great job. And I love the teaching aspect!
“The Pethericks” are just laying underfloor heating at their Convent this week.
They mentioned that you can’t use metal with lime. When you explained I went like “ Ah, I understand and what a genius idea to use the plastic grid to hold the pipes in place”.
Regarding the cold weather, order yourself some “Hothands Hand warmers”. These packs stay warm for 8 hours.
When we had the big freeze and no heat last year in Texas, I stuffed these hand warmers between a tight fitting undershirt and sweatshirt to keep my kids and myself warm. It worked.
You could even cut the legs of a pair of old pantyhose, stuff the hand warmer in there and tie it on your lower back for warmth and pain relief.
You gotta do what you need to do to get a project done and fight the elements.
Stay warm and safe! Many blessings to you and your wonderful project.

Like the experiments, lessons learned and ensuing changes. Forms, tapping/tamping and leveling has gotten better and faster. Noticed the laser and stick level combo. I actually found the laser level method much slower and more fiddly! Have gone back to using forms, and more of them. Once all the edges are done (since the cork is no good at being a form) it will be much easier and faster.

The list of great things about Portugal is very long. The minuses of Portugal are few, but the delays are at the top of that short list. Delays in receiving items and materials, delays in scheduling work to happen... often a job is started and then halfway through it is abandoned for months or a year. i.e. I've got a crew's big electric cement mixer at my house since Oct 2021 when they installed calçada walk paths. Half are done, still waiting for the rest. The flip side is that after waiting for many months, often out of the blue things happen all on the same day with little or no notice. It makes planning very difficult. I wait four or six months for various things, Then on a day that I'm hours away I get message from 3 different entities saying they're on the way. Esta é a vida em Portugal.

Clamping down the wire net/chicken net a bit overengineered assuming the pipes will be attached to the net, why not just a simple nail that's close to being down being bent and hold the mesh/net at place? The whole thing (mesh/net/pipes) will be covered by lime/sand (I assume) anyway and thus permamently fixated so the attachement of the pipes to the net/mesh is "temporary" and concequently should be done as simply as possible.

  • @BLAZERSEAMS

We did consider using the plugs/ties direct to the pipes, but it would make it extremely slow and fiddly to lay the pipe … drilling and adding fixings at the same time as laying the pipe. The ‘geo-grid’ will make it much faster, and we’ll be more easily able to adjust pipe runs should we need to

Did you guys consider just using a concrete floor? I know you’re making a lot of effort to make everything eco and breathable but seems like it would make the whole installation simpler.

In the US, I am currently having renovation projects done in my home. I keep getting delayed by unavailable parts. Are Pandemic-related supply chain issues a constant obstacle in Portugal and significant schedule breaker?
I am asking because I am weighing the choices of importing supplies for installation of specilalty systems in a shipping container along with my household items.

@@dav1dsm1th Are you in Portugal? I am aware of the global nature of pandemics.

I don’t think this delay is pandemic related at all, think the part is just coming from the UK and that’s taking longer than expected (we’ve chosen a global ufh heating brand).
Here there’s also very much a supply-demand factor. Many of the materials we choose aren’t that common so getting hold of them is more difficult…. and yes, underfloor heating really isn’t very common here even though the winters are quite cold.
So if you have things, or want specialist items, check if they’re available in Europe first. It’s probably easier to get from within the EU rather than import

Did you say, "bum gun"? Is that another term of a bidet?
I am curious though, what would happen if there was ever a leak in the heating pipes, in the future. I know you research everything very thoroughly. Did you find any references to repairing one of these systems?

    • @MAKEDOGROW
      @MAKEDOGROW  Рік тому

      How would a leak develop?
      Yes, modern bidet 😀
The system will get a full pressurised test before the slab is laid, and there are no joins in the pipe (all standard installation practices)
