Jeep XJ Sound Deadening & Vibration Dampening

  • While waiting for the Turbo I've moved onto the interior to keep the progress going on the build. I haven't run carpets or headliner now for about seven years and despite the practicality with corrosion control and water the drone of the Jeep is getting a bit much.
Obviously the tires play a big part of the noise in the cab but ultimately my plan is to take out the vibration of the sheet metal with Salento Coat. I considered many alternatives but went with silent coat as it will help thermally with its reflective coating, but also there was a 40% off deal.
Its easy to use but its best to deal with any corrosion or body work before installing. Also consider the weight your adding to the Jeep which in my case is 28kg of material.
Hope this video helps out and long live the shinny's.

Revisiting as this is one of the better channels to learn from without blaring background music and has good lighting with clear narration. I've done bedlining, noise decoupler, insulation with a foam rubber mat topped with forward floor liners. Floor liners are a massive upgrade as one can just dump them out when dirty, or gets filled with snow or sand. Product list for me has been Herculiner bedliner, Kilmat 80mil decoupler, 4mm Siless insulation in my 4 liter powered 1987 XJ Pioneer. Foam rubber mat is about 12mm which provides a bit more insulation itself. Undecided on the backerbaord/headliner refurbishment due to the fact in my girlfriends XJ along the side of the roof I installed some magnetic bars that are really usedful to hold items, and even the keys. Cheers 👍✌

I used some kill mat type material along with high density foam on the headliner. Its worked quite well at removing the noise and keeping the heat in or out. I may further glue fabric material to the roof later.
It sounds like you have done a solid job on your Jeep, it makes a big difference to the noise when your driving!

When I repaired some minor floor pan rust in my 96XJ, I also remove the headliner and applied a product made in Russia called Noico, which is similar to fat-mat, but roughly 1/3 price. The inside of the roof was covered with this along with the floors and inside the doors on the outer skin. Made a noticeable difference in road noise.
For corrosion control in the rust belt of the USA, I apply a yearly coating of Fluid Film on and in the chassis.

A great tip that I’ve jotted down. It’s unrelated, but it reminds me that mine needs a new headliner soon. Silly me used a cleaner on the original that rendered the glue null and void. In my defense, I was undergoing radiation therapy, and the ole brain was a bit of mess.

Thanks for the kind comment mate. Your bushcraft videos have helped me immeasurably. I do miss those, but my introduction to that community has only been in the last four years. Back in the late eighties and very early nineties I was fortunate to assist on several survival courses by a former Vietnam era Green Beret. But time and then the brain tumor erased much of those perishable skills.
Finding the community on UA-cam honestly gave me a reason to live. Cheers dude.

I commented before about what I did but I did dynamat on the floors and wheel wells and in the doors and rear quarters then I put closed cell foam waterproof insulation over the dynamat on the floor and after that put new carpet with the original style insulation removed because that original insulation soaks up a lot of water.
The dynamat in the doors was a really nice upgrade they sound so nice when they shut now.
I like my comfy interior I have a roll cage and a lot of mods but I like my carpet and stuff so I try to keep it nice and that waterproof insulation makes a massive difference. I used noico green foam it's closed cell waterproof stuff. It covered the pretty dynamat but it's all under the carpet anyway.
I don't have a headliner and I don't want a headliner but I haven't put the dynamat on the roof yet even though it would probably be really nice but for the last 10 years or so I've covered my roof in stickers from all sorts of things and places and I don't really want to cover up my stickers haha.
I used real dynamat I think most all sound deadening products are roughly the same. I also did full coverage everywhere even inside the doors. I also replaced the vapor barrier in the doors with a better product it's a thin sound deadening I believe it was sound skins brand but that gives me another layer for the doors and most importantly seals out vapor and dust. When driving down dusty roads with the windows up I could see dust coming in from inside the doors around the factory barrier that was failing.
I'd highly suggest putting your sound deadening in the doors it's one of my favorite things about the sound deadening it's a bit difficult to get full coverage it takes multiple little pieces and doesn't need to be perfect but I covered 99 percent of the inside of the door skins and it reminds me of Mercedes doors or fancy cars that have that really nice solid sound when they shut.
I just recently replaced my oem limited model leather seats with corbeau seats up front. Originally I had cloth seats but I swapped to xj leather seats a long time ago and they've been super high maintenance repairing the frames and replacing parts and replacing the seat cushions when they tear I've gone through a lot of used seat parts. I'm happy with the corbeau seats I got the baja xrs with new brackets it's definitely a nice upgrade they look a little racey but they are comfy and also heated which my wife likes.
I really like your rear cargo shelf/cage I'm thinking of trying to find something similar. My 2nd battery is in the rear and I have my air and tools and stuff and sometimes a fridge so I'd like more storage.

I can’t help but be curious of how effective a layer of flex seal would be on the floor to knock down the magpie invasion. I bet it’d do wonders, but you’d have to tape the seams and gutters up before application to preserve your water flow routes.

I used that exact same silent coat on my Mazda Bongo self build. I used it in the back cab and the roof but I feel I used too much, like yourself though I tend to go extra and added more weight too. I don't have it in the front cab yet, I'm waiting to see what the next mot says for future upgrades but I might go with the sound deadening/insulating layer, being mid engined I sit on top of the engine so it is loud regardless but the Silent Coat made a huge difference, before you had to shout to the passenger, after you could simply talk and I'm sat on top of a 2.5td.

Its stopped a lot of vibrations and made the jeep sound quieter. The floor has been the biggest challenge. I think another layer of something is needed over the bling, but my worry is water getting trapped.
The roof I covered with black foam which looks great, the rear cargo area has a rubber sheet. The floor pans just bling bling and I'm not sure what to do. You can also buy a black version of this in Sweden from BRL Electronics, I would do that as its going to look better!

I pulled the carpet out of my 2 door xj to replace some rotted out sheet metal. Like you I was going to raptor line the interior but without carpet to put back on I would lose that insulation and sound deadening. I’m wondering now if I save my money and just spray paint the interior and put that stuff in to get rid of the noise?

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  2 роки тому +1

What I have done provides less sound deadening than the carpet. An idea I would do is pull the carpet, raptor line, then apply some sound damping sheets like I have done. Then you can put the carpet back and cut out the floor pan areas. That was thought about doing. Just having carpet with no floor areas so it's around the arches and center colum but I just have mats at the bottoms. I'm not sure if this is a good idea but it's an option.

I understand about feeling like you don't belong here in the UK, I feel exactly the same. Sweden is where I've wanted to be for a few years but with little money and no way to establish a base to get started has prevented my dream. Having no support, no friends and family that only care about themselves makes it all very very tough at times.

Ah mate that's a very tough situation. Obviously that makes sense about Scotland given the land access laws and such. Are you with your daughter then while on the road?
Life is a bit simpler out here for certain although the cold in the north makes its almost impossible to long term camp outside. There are places you can rent and stay, cabins, huts, spare lodges that people own. Some don't expect much in rent but its the kind of arrangement that often requires being here and talking to people. That's what we found anyway. We arrived with virtually no money or clue of where to go and we lived in the jeep and just networked until things happened.
The difference being, we had the money to get here first which I appreciate isnt easy. I am really sorry to hear of your struggles. Mental health is something I have struggled with for a long time and I think it will be for the rest of my life. I cant obviously understand exactly what your going through and it sound like a lot of things to deal with and fight through.
Sweden isnt all rosy to be fair. I mean I like it here but I also miss many aspects of the UK. If you can save enough one day to make it here nd you want to stay, it is possible, its just being here and riding out the storm of getting setup. We had a very difficult time here for about three years on arrival. It took its toll on my health, metal state, Megan's also. I would like to say we came out of it stronger, but its going to take time for all that to heal I think.

I ran just mats for a whole but I still found the noise to be too much. I've bought some sound deadening adhesive foam to go over it. Its waterproof and it comes in large sheets. I will try this and take into account the water collection points.

@@bmonden I'm using a black adhesive 1cm sound isolated foam from BRL Electronics. A 9 Pack is 700kr and they are 75x45cm. www.brl.se/sv/artiklar/silent-coat-noise-buffler-20.html
It was this stuff but it didn't cost that much for one. I will try and find my original link

It was 1130kr for 80 sheets. So like 100gbp. Not crazy expensive for the whole jeep but it's not cheap either on my budget. Hopefully it's a bit warmer and quieter now
