Europe was bad, but what the Marines in the Pacific went through was a special kind of hell. Rough terrain. Harsh conditions. Tenacious and fanatical enemy. I loved this series and think it's every bit as good as Band of Brothers, but it is bleak. It had to be to tell the story. I get why some people couldn't appreciate it.
At least the US Marines on Guadalcanal could expect to receive supplies. The Japanese referred to it as Starvation Island and, for those who were evacuated in February, their digestive system was as badly off as a European concentration camp survivor's. Neither could actually digest anything beyond some of the most rudimentary gruel.
@@kemarisite The Japanese are possibly the most dangerous warriors on the planet. The average line infantry IJA soldier was basically a Ghurka in his mental toughness. The types of situations they fought through are unimaginable for the USA soldier much less any civilian. I dont think there exists a more hardline soldier in all of history. Only Marine Raiders or USA POWs faced a similar circumstance as the IJA. Can you imagine being told "this fighting position is untenable but you have to inflict 10:1 casualties" and then starving to death? That was Iwo Jima.... and people wonder why they order Bonzai Charges....
They say "Rah" with such conviction. I've only said "Hooah" with a hefty amount of irony. Was always jealous of their esprit d' corps but am reminded of why I went to the Army when I see their living situation. lol
Sledge with much chagrin later realized that he'd wished they'd done better scrubbing those oil drums because they were the same ones used to bring drinking water to them on Peleliu. It was so hot Sledge wrote that he could hold up his legs while laying down and his boots would empty out full of sweat. His buddies asked him if he'd been walking on water.
Fun fact: The bombed out building on the Peleliu airfield is a real building that is still standing, yet also still abandoned, to this day. It is most famous for its appearance in Call of Duty World at War, especially its reuse to make the Nazi Zombies map Nacht Der Untoten. This map would be the catalyst for the global Nazi Zombies sensation.
13:13 The thing is ,that once the airstrip was theirs ,there was a HUGE thriving business between the airforce trading alcohol, cash, food and anything else they could use to buy souvenirs. They didnt have to ask. Every plane was loaded with contraband and went back with souvenirs.
The scene where they finally get some peaches after so long without proper nutrition and Lecky pukes in response is poetically a comedically framed show of what would happen if the concentration camp prisoners near the end of Band of Brothers had eaten too much too quickly.
The scene with the Moccasins always reminds me of my Uncle bc he was a Marine in Vietnam and he told me about how Marines nvr steal they make due by strategically transporting equipment to alternate locations😅

The most depressing part of The Pacific has to be Okinawa. Historians say it was the sole Allied landing in Japan proper.
