In my head that was just another clue, at least looking back. In the book it states that Crowley just wishes his clothes into being, while Aziraphale actually buys physical garments. So Crowley having a "new" coat that actually exists would just be a hint at it not being Crowley at all.
Crowley as a character has been inhabiting my head for 18 years -- one of my all-time favorite book characters. Bringing this character to the screen could have gone so wrong, but David Tennant just totally nailed it. So much swagger.
I feel bad now for doubting he could do it, originally I thought they got their casting backwards. now I happily eat my words and Michael Sheen is the internet's boyfriend. To my partial vindication, I heard Tennant and Sheen told Gaiman if there's ever a stage production, they'd swap roles each night. So I'm not the only one who saw it the other way around ;)
TBH, when I heard they'd cast David Tennant as Crowley, I was pretty confident that the hot mess of a demon I'd been loving for decades was in good hands. Ditto for Michael Sheen. In fact I felt pretty okay about the whole thing when I found out that Neil and Terry had worked out what they wanted for a screen version back when Sir Terry was still around, and that Neil was writing it. Those were all Good Omens!

Just think how awful it would have been if the previous attempts to adapt this were successful. I read somewhere they were thinking of getting Johnny Depp to play Crowley in the 90s/early 2000s. In which case Crowley would have likely been a Jack sparrow knock off. Shudders. Thankfully Tennant has more range with his funny characters than Depp. He doesn't play Crowley like a Doctor knock off, he plays him like, well, Crowley. And I heard something about them having wanted Robin Williams for Aziraphale back in the day, which I guess wouldn't be the worst thing ever but still not as good/fitting as Sheen.
@@lovetolovefairytales Robin Williams? I actually think that would've been really awesome. He also had the 'angelic smile' ability Sheen has, and his microexpressions weren't bad either. I'm not sure if I ever heard him with an English accent, though, which Aziraphale must have, but that's the only flaw I can think of. Still, with Depp being his counterpart it wouldn't be as good. I love Depp, but feel like he'd try to make the pre-existing character more 'quirky', changing Crowley's temperament. I can't picture anyone but Tennant as Crowley now, tbh.

So it would have been Robin working at the British Museum instead.

If they were going to make such an unnecessary change, then there's no telling what else they were going to tamper with. I'm glad Neil Gaiman didn't go through with it so we could get a proper, faithful adaptation instead of a 'Hollywood' one, even if it meant waiting twenty years. What we got was worth it, I think.

I was in love with Crowley long before Dr. Who was even rebooted, so there's really no contest. Sure, he was a good Doctor, but he was a *PERFECT* Crowley.

What I love about Crowley and David's interpretation of him is that he has as much presence and command over his personality and wit as David's Doctor does. Like you BELIEVE it so vividly that you really see a demon and an angel trying so desperately to save the world.

He absolutely nailed the part where he rides the Bentley to the air base. That part was so great in the book and now it's so great in the show.
