OCTOPUSSY | Acrostar Jet

- Bond gets out of a scrape in OCTOPUSSY using the nifty Acrostar ”Bede” Jet. For close-ups of Bond manoeuvring the jet through a hangar, special effects supervisor John Richardson mounted a plane on a pole attached to a stripped-down Jaguar. The car was driven through the hangar at breakneck speed, soldiers running in front of the car to hide the chassis.
From a time when Bond movies were entertainment. One can watch and enjoy these movies over and over again.
but now that your IQ has eventually gone up, it all looks like a circus)
Hey, it’s Roger Moore
Agree Tom.
Yeah. Don't like any Bond movie with Dalton or Craig
@@grokranfan8578 Why not Dalton ?
It's so ridiculous that it's brilliant. I love it, and Moore delivers that line so perfectly.
Effortlessly charming, but that was Roger Moore in a nutshell wasn't it? Rest In Peace.

Fill her up please. 😎✌
I forget how good that scene is. It is totally ridiculous but exciting as hell. And that little jet looks awesome as it darts through the air
One of the most underrated Bond films to date.
Totally underrated.
Highly, along with Living Daylights and the very violent License To Kill.
@@CraigMcfly1985 No. Those got their praise. They were too dark anyway
I love it when he flies through the hangar. The jet sound turns into a diving JU-87 stuka (propeller plane) and he goes from flying at mach 1 to knife edging at 20 mph haha
That, and the door seems to halfway open again.
I saw this one for my 17th birthday back in 1983 those were the best days Love it I am a die hard bond fan 007👍👍👍🤗🤗
@@stanxx8011 I remember octopussy when I was in school. I think I was 13 or maybe 14. I can also remember sitting at my parents breakfast table eating my cereal and looking at the back of my cornflakes box, they were running a promotion to collect memorabilia from the movie with tokens.
I didn't really notice that. But after reading your comment I went back and paid more attention to the sound. Right!!!! That IS the Jericho Siren on a diving Stuka!!!!! Funny I didn't catch that as I am an RC model flyer and the Stuka is one of my favorite planes and I have had several Stukas and still have one now.

a vehicle that bond uses that actually stays in one peice, Q would be proud
Nuts! That was going to be my line.
Bond did bring "Little Nelly" back in one piece in "You Only Live Twice".
@@rwboa22 there were scratches, so Q still ripped Bond a new one.
Q would be surprised.
Q hasn't failed yet or his gadgets.
The most realistic part of this whole scene is that for once when a plane runs out of fuel in a movie, it doesn't just fall out of the sky.
Let's appreciate a non-cgi sequence done right.

@Maxim Ghost I agree. Cheaper too.
LOVE IT!!!
Old school effects. The jet towed through the hanger on a stick bolted to a trailer.
Bede BD-5J; The model used in the movie had a fuel load of about 26 gallons and could fly about 75-90 minutes at cruise. Later versions (Coors, Budweiser "Silver Bullet") carried up to 32 Gallon tank.
My uncle was building a long wing BD-5 when Jim Bede went bust. Never got completed.

Damn lucky for your uncle. He would have most likely killed himself.
Where can I buy one 🤔
As I recall, this is the Coors Light Silver Bullet, repainted for the movie ..
@@travi152Trade-a-Plane. If you're lucky enough to catch one for sale 😂. Lots of people started building the kits, but Jim Bede went broke, so many of them didn't get finished.

That theater was a death trap. Many people were shot and robbed in there. The popcorn had a special butter that was delicious. To die for. No pun intended
One of the best pre-title sequences. Also the last in which it's a separate mini mission and not connected to the main story.
William Southall I like the separate mini-missions because they're like a standalone short film.
But this wasn't the last one - what about Tomorrow Never Dies?
@@redlightmax But in TND It wasn't a separate mini mission, because you see the Encoder and Mr.Gupta who plays a part in the main story. Octopussy is definitely the last which it's pre-credit sequence was separate from the main story. Something I would personally like to see again.
@eating sugar no papa Well the theme of him becoming a double O is a theme through out the movie
Agreed
The pre-credits Tomorrow Never Dies was also a separate mini-mission was it not?
i miss the 80s and early 90's really bad.

If I win the lottery, that little jet is on my wishlist.

One of the best starts to any bond film
this is why i love roger moore. he can be serious when he wants but also finds way to liven things up such as that "fill 'er up". i think after "the spy who loved me", he became more relaxed and comfortable in that role where he was just having fun and i think the films he made afterwards was him just having fun and it made the film sets a lot of fun.
So good ❤
So good ❤
John Richardson should've got an Oscar for this.
the sound design here is incredible. No obnoxious soundtrack covering over the glorious jet noises, like you'd get in modern movies. Music is great, but there's a time and place for it.
Kudos to entire team for such hardwork

The most high-tech aspect of the plane is that it doesnt need jet fuel... just regular gas.
I noticed that too
Yeah
To be fair, jet engines aren't actually picky. The specifics of the burner might need to be modified, but it isn't like a piston engine that needs to have it burn only at a certain time and speed. It's absolutely possible that lighter oils might just work.

Obviously the perfect line "Fill her up"!!!!
Great Bond movie and one of the best pre-title sequences.
2:01 That's the most English-looking crowd of South American horse enthusiasts in the history of the world.
Lol. I remember watching this as a kid. It's aged surprisingly well! 😄
Roger always had the best one liners 😅.
that is why Roger Moore was my favorite James Bond
As a boy this was our most favoured of the Bond pursuits: the victory spin at the end remains, even to our mature eyes, pleasing.
Pause at 1:40 and 1:43 - - Though it's blurry, you can see the pole used to prop up the Bede jet inside the hangar. The pole was attached to a Jaguar with the roof torn off to complete the illusion.
When the Bede BD-5J 'Acrostar' Jet exits the hanger at high speed and climbing, did you notice in the scene that cuts to Bond looking back over his shoulder, the parked helicopter on his left to which he appears to be "driving" past at a slow speed. No doubt filmed with the aircraft on the ground and under tow.
@@timorvet1 - - Nice spotting there mate. At least they used practical effects instead of CGI though CGI wasn't a thing yet in the early 80s. And Moore himself did that scene instead of a stunt double. This Bede jet scene looked awesome back then.
Whoever did the flying for this scene was ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!! their skill is second to NONE!!! Especially through the second doors of that hanger. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍😉
Regarding the hangar scene..... the stunt pilot did not fly directly throughout the hangar but they made it like 007 flew throughout the hangar by attaching one of the aircrafts to a pole attached to a Jaguar car..and they had to put like people and the aircrafts on the hangar to keep the pole car moving the plane out of sight to give the feeling of the pilot flying throughout the hangar
@@martinanaya388 The shot at 1:46, where it leaves the hangar, is still very impressive though.
All praise to the cinematographer and editor 🎉
No cgi... And mostly with no music... What a great sequence! Had this on VHS back in the day and loved it as a kid, ended up watching 007 intros all the time😂😎🎥😎🎥😎
Bond movies are the best. Me and my brother always went to movies to see new James Bond 007 movies. Those were the days.
Thats what I love about Bond movies. Always showing off cool stuff.
this is the most old memory i have of a bond movie when i was a kid.
When my parents went to see this, my mom complained that my dad made her sit through this sequence a second time. He loved planes.
I was projectionist for this when we received it in the summer of 1983.
I really like the opening with the jet but having said that my brain over analyzes everything.
When the jet enters the hangar at that speed, he would have exited almost as fast as he entered.
Also showing Moore in a model tilted and slowed down, the prop holding the right wing is painfully obvious.
Other than that and the Tarzan yell and clown scenes, it's a very underrated 007 adventure.
Actually my favorite of Moore's.
If John Barry had done the music for TSWLM, then it would have been rated a 10 out of 10.
A fine analysis.
@@michaeldavidfigures9842 i fully agree to this statement.
Such a fun opening scene!
Absolutely the most amazing thing I have ever seen
ROGER MOORE IS JAMES BOND OO7
OCTOPUSSY is an amazing Bond-film, it has everything (except for a Bond car)..... It surely is one of the best in the franchise..... And I just love Magda and Octopussy and Sir Roger is just hilarious, it seems that Bond is in his nature.....
And I really love the Indian settings, because I'm an Indian.....

Connery best bond ever!!!
Fantastic. What a great scene. Loved Roger Moore in Bond movies. He always had the great cheeky approach in the way he delivers his one liners.
This is the best pre title sequence of all it is still fresh.
My freshman year of college, saw this in Waikiki theatre with my bro, loved the gas station part lol! RIP Sir Roger🙏
One of the best pre title sequences ever!

My favourite James Bond ❤, Roger Moore, RIP 🙏❤💙♥😢
Classic cinematography and the panache of Roger Moore; just great stuff !
Fantastico Roger 😍 per me il migliore 😁😁
The VFX of it coming out of the hangar are impeccable, even frame by frame.
Erm yes... Entering and exiting the hangar look unbelievably good. How did they do it? And obviously I'm excluding the crappy bit going through the hangar (which I understand was a plane on a stick on a car) 😀.
God i miss roger moore :(
Wkkwkw
To my mind the best Bond ... never took it too seriously, and quintessentially English balance of cool reserve and self-mockery.
If you take viagra it will not make you James Bond but you will roger moore 👌😀
RIP Sir Roger Moore.
That scene never gets old.
No CGI. :-)
I like how James Bond is: Expert Jet pilot, expert prop pilot, expert helicopter pilot, expert driver both car and motorcycle, expert skier, expert sky diver, expert shot, expert horse rider, expert scuba diver, literally the thing he is LEAST expert at but still proficient at is stealth and melee combat. You can see the pole holding the plane at 1:40. One of those once you see if you can't unsee it.
Old Hollywood Logic: all planes in a dive (piston engined or jets) sound like Stukas. Why?
Dramatic Hollywood movie effect probably to create emotional response to people watching
Bond film always do this lol. Even a diving helicopter in one of the films.
cause it's coooooooool
It's the airplane equivalent of the Wilhelm scream.
The jet wouldn't make a noise until long past camera
The best Bond film with Rodger Moore, fantastic.
Roger Moore was the best Bond of all of them. He added more humor and style than all of the other Bonds put together.
He cut his chops portraying Simon Templar in “The Saint” from 1962-1969, a suave sophisticate, knight-in-shining-armor type. That said, he didn’t exactly portray Ian Fleming’s fictional hero too accurately.
Commander Bond is pulling some serious g's here.
Sir, James Bond Your Movies Are Extraordinary, Classic Cinematography, Watching From India, Hats Off You,What an Amazing,🙏👏👏👏💖👍
Back when Bond was just popcorn entertainment and not a dark reflection of the times.
The landing on the road and refilling part was likely inspired by Hans-Joachim Marseille a German WWII fighter ace who is believed to have done this while in pilot traing.
When you’re tasked with having to engage in multiple sorties, shooting down several planes (17 on one occasion!) sometimes one has to do this…
Imagine *James Bond* the Mayor of my movie town. 🎥🎥🎥
One of the best openings. Maybe THE best
Still holds up 40 years later.
Every actor who has played Bond has a few GREAT scenes. This is definitely one of the top Roger Moore scenes.

What incredible aviation skills James Bond shown while he flew the jet.

The slowest rocket with the longest burning motor ever devised!
Not a rocket it's a missile
@@rolltide9547 What is a "missle"?
@@scheusselmensch5713 Missile is a rocket that carries a warhead (explosive charge or payload) making it a weapon. Some people use the two terms interchangeably.
@@markschroeder2578 That's because the two terms ARE interchangeable. And of course there are missiles that carry no warhead. Perhaps those should be called hitiles. In any event I was referring to the rocket and its motor. If you've ever seen such things launched, and I've seen hundreds upon hundreds, you would know that most of the motors burn only briefly.
AND A VERY LONG WIRE TOO!
Great movie!
Roger Moore. The man...the class.
2:06 Background fits perfectly for a flight with 250 knots. To this day no one would guess, that the plane was standing on the ground and not moving at all and it was just camera magic. ^^
Two things I notice immediately. A jet aircraft does not make this sound... 1:30. The sound of a propeller being driven by forwarding motion. The other thing. The gas station. What gas station has jet fuel on hand?
Roger Moore is my favorite 007. I am not saying he is the best Bond. But he's the one I first saw back when I was a little kid and was amazed at how badazz he was. My dad always said check out Connery and I have. Him and I have even watched some of the older ones. Connery is great. So are the other "newer" ones and Daniel Craig. But Roger Moore is my favorite.
The horses arse. gets me. looks so real then it winches up. ha ha
"Fill her up, please."
I love it!
At least now I finally know why this was hanging on Q’s wall in “Die Another Day.”
Oh that's right.
I love how the "missile" was actually attached to the plane using a hidden wire so when it went past the launcher, the missile "fired".
Фильм шикарный, регулярно его пересматриваю!
NonCGI Scene are the best Kind
There are some great forced perspective gags, like the jet exiting the hangar where the near door is fake and positioned close to camera to make the gap look much smaller
Great art of movie making , hatts off .
Goddamn I thought I never would say it: New Bond - dark and grim, boring. Old Bond - Pulls out a jet from horse's ass, I love it.
LOVE YOU 007 .
Back when 007 was fun.
I luv this sequence & must've seen this movie a hundred times since it came out 37 yrs ago. But I never noticed, until now, that there's actually a Learjet (posing as the AcroStar) flying toward the hangar at 1:32. You can even see it's twin engine nacelles towards the back of it's fuselage.
The legendary "Q" could've not thought of a better way to get Bond out of danger by concealing a BD-5J in a horsebox.
BD-5J one of my favourite light aircrafts
I had the opportunity to sit in one at an airshow many years ago and my shoulders were wider than the fuselage so I could sit but not square my shoulders. That destroyed my illusion of ever flying one. Still an amazing little airplane. The pilot told me the pulsejet was mounted so high up above the centerline he had to get up to take off speed and throttle back to take off since the thrust kept it pressed to the runway.
Great well done scene. The story on how they pulled this off is so interesting. These guys were genius- are they called Second unit???
Something like that, yes.
