    Thank you so much for the video. When visiting Finnish schools, banana tree is always a simple story that helps me embedding many topics into one. 8 out of 10 students are not quite sure what tree is it when I show the photo and the most popular guess would be the ‘palm tree’. Fun facts for the kids: each banana tree produces banana fruits only once.
    But almost all parts of a banana tree can be used for so many purposes.
    Banana leaves are good to replace plates when eating, a good wrapper not just for cooked food, during my childhood, it was very common for banana leaves to be used to wrap fish in the market. From the stem we can get rope, banana peel is edible, curry, subzi, and even to substitute minced meat to make meatball too, also pulled beef.
    Part of my childhood is to use banana leaves as the umbrella.
    We can reduce the usage of plastic significantly by utilising banana trees.
    Greetings from Northern Finland.

    I found this video the most basic and useful after searching through many. Thank you for keeping it basic and responding to peoples posts here.!!
    I live in central west florida and many years ago a customer gave me one of his Banana plants cut off a larger plant. . It did nothing for many years, dying each winter season due to frost and never growing more than 2 feet. Fed up I decided to move it about 15 feet away. Over the next few years I now have about 10 plants from that one.... I moved a lot of them away from the main plant to other areas of the yard. All of a sudden almost over night that same go no where plant which is only about 5 feet tall has a Flower!! I now have mini banana's something I was sure was not going to happen.
    Now I am not to confident this will produce good fruit the reason I think this is because were in mid November here and it gets cold. One thing I have learned is to resist cutting off the dead leaves which simply forces the plant to grow more leaves, but also tall and strong in my opinion. Doing this apparently unknowingly hinders the plant to produce the flower because its to busy replacing leaves. So if you can resist cutting off the leaves this will coax the plant to produce a flower for bananas to grow. I also have been using compost with cow manure (Ha Manure, Costanza's favorite word on Seinfield) and watering them a lot. I am not sure when to cut the Flower off the stem so I will wait about another week or so to see if how they are doing. Any advise on when to cut the flower off would be helpful..Also I see that someone posted you can get sick on the first bunch of banana's, is their any truth to this? Again thanks for taking the time to make this video.

      +Tmtm20349 Thank you for your feedback! Nice to know you liked the video. I do try and keep things simple in all my videos. Nice to know about your banana plant and I think your tip on not cutting leaves might help a few fellow viewers, so thanks for sharing that! I usually cut off the flower/bud when the last set of bananas just above the bud have become too small. Then I remove the flowers and let the bananas mature. Happy Gardening!

      +California Gardening Thank you for the reply! I posted something new I should have just asked in this reply. What do you think could be causing the flowers to fall off and not produce bananas. Could it be the cooler nights we been having. Averaging about 65-70 degree's?

    I have had a Banana plant since July 2007. It is now a tree with 3 more Banana Trees shooting off that "mother". Today I noticed I have finally gotten some Bananas growing way high up. I am so very excited. My Son told me earlier today that we cannot eat the Bananas from the first fruiting as they will make us sick.... :( :( so not believing him...and doing my own research I found your Video...and know so much more now than I ever did...We live where we get temps that drop into the high teens but the Bananas have survived....I will also check out your links on recipes for the centers of the stalks, and the flowers. I know so much more thanks to you....:) :)

    we polynesians boil green bananas and eat them like a boiled potato. with the very ripe bananas (too ripe to eat) we make a dish called 'poke' (paw-keh), hawaiians call 'po'e'. the ripe banana is cooked, arrowroot is added then coconut cream is added. obviously there's more detail. lots of recipes online. but it is eaten as a dessert. nowadays, other vegetables are used to make this popular dish like pumpkin, pawpaw, carrot etc.
    great video btw. thanks for sharing.

    I really enjoyed this video. I love to see how plants and vegetables grow in real life. I remember the first time I learned that the stalk of individual bananas grows upward which seemed strange to me. Like you said in the video, the taste of the bananas are so much better if they are picked ripe from the tree. I have found this to be true about so many foods. I can not stand tuna fish from a can once I had the freshly prepared tuna fish sandwich. Same is true with home grown tomatoes. Let's all start a garden. Fresh is better! Google to see how Brussels Sprouts grow. That's another weird plant.

    Now I'm inspired to attempt to grow bananas again! I loved the apple banana variety; we harvested several crops but then had to destroy the young shoot plants due to the banana virus. We really should have been more diligent when trying to control the aphids, which I understand spread the virus, and when fertilizing.
    Thank you also for the recipe link, we will try the banana florets recipe if we are successful growing bananas again. (Imagine, we tossed all that goodness away in the compost last time!)

    Very interesting video. Thank you. What variety of banana was that shown in your video?
    Do you use any type of fertilizer to feed the plant? (I heard recommendations for composted chicken manure). I didn't know about harvesting the core stem (thanks for the tip), but, I would probably compost the completed mother plant for my vegetable garden. I'm new to banana growing and recently purchased some small banana plants from a local nursery. I plan keeping most in large containers, but, might try to plant a few in the ground... however, it would require building a large raised bed as our soil is pretty much sand and rock :(

    The leaves are also used to cook food in in some parts of Mexico as well. Some tamales are wrapped with banana leaves. I have never tasted any made this way as cooking varies regionally and my mother was from a dry desert like place so naturally no banana leaves were used for cooking. I also was not aware that you could use other parts of the banana other than the fruit or leaves in cooking. Great informational video.

      When you see small pups popping out of the ground, those can be dug up with a bit of root attached and planted elsewhere, and these in turn will send out pups in time. The main stem that bears the fruit has to be cut at the bottom and discarded after fruiting. Each stem only fruits once.

    Hi there, I so wish I had re watched your video...a few minutes ago we cut off the Banana Stalk from the Plant. Now I think we did this wrong. We should have only cut off the the Flower Bud and left the Bananas to ripen. Since 2 months ago when I watched this they really didn't grow up or get much bigger at all, but the stem kept growing and the flowers did not make anymore bananas. Not knowing enough and being preoccupied I didn't research much further at all. Yesterday, I googled Banana's again...and one "EDU" site said to not leave the Banana's on the tree too long, as they become " Starchy" and do not maintain their sweetness....So this morning we cut it off. Most of the Banana's have not filled out, and remain somewhat "shrunked"....Oh well ....However I also have more Banana Plants that are strong all from this Mother. One next to her is taller than she is. I know Mother has to come down. And I want to try eating the center core as you have suggested. The Bud, is in the kitchen waiting for me to figure that out, and get the flowers out. We shall see what happens. I do have 7 more Banana Plants so just maybe I can try again and do more research on the Harvesting Time for taking them off the Plant. It seemed like this is a long long process waiting for them to ripen on the Plant. I waited 7 years for them to get big, and to get my first Bananas to grow...that happened, and I am thrilled for that. Seems like I screwed it up already. I hope the other huge plants will also bloom. There are new baby plants shooting up as well. I shall keep my fingers crossed for more blooms.

    What do you do to the small banana plants that grow at the base of the big banana tree? Do you just remove them or can we replant them? Can you please share your thoughts?
    Can you also make a video on how you prepare your compost? I started with a lot of enthusiasm on compost making and now I am turned off by the stench. Can you help with some tips?

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  9 років тому

      Tara Jagannathan We use the small banana plants to do puja in some festivals. You may use them that way or re-plant them elsewhere for it to become another big plant. Hope that helps. I will try and prepare a video on composting. Thanks for the suggestion!

    My friend gave me banana plant but it was cut from the body not from a trunk. I put the banana plant in the bucket with water. The plant started having roots. If I plant this banana, will it produce fruits?

    How about the outer most dried stem used to make jasmine garland? The cows would eat the rest including the the disposable leaf one eats in. Thus the whole plant being used. Save the tubers for next crop.

Did you grow the beautiful tree from scratch or you buy the plant. I loveeeeeeee that tree. Your tangerine looks sweet and tasty.

    i have couple baby plants around the main banana plant i planted, can i keep them like that ? will they do well without separating from mother plant ?, and the fertiliser nitrogen content recommeneded leavel above 15 is okay ?... only nitrozen or anything else too..

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  8 років тому

      Yes the baby plants will grow around the mother plant without separation. If you separate, they get more space and grow well too. High Nitrogen 21 or above is recommended for banana

    • @anilk3591
      @anilk3591 8 років тому

      i am not separating them and hoping they do great as it is and my mother plant and its first baby plant are eqal in height, the remaining baby plants are getting closer and growing well too.

    Hello I have a problem with a banana tree. Overnight the plant produced a purple bulb on the stem the first bunch of bananas (4) did not/are not growing to well. And now the purple bulb keeps opening up but dropping the flowers/banana inside to the floor. I wonder if I am doing something wrong or just a poor plant. .

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  8 років тому

      +Tmtm20349 Its OK for the flowers to drop after sometime. With warm temps the plants will produce 4-5 rows of bananas before the flowers start falling off without producing bananas. At this stage its best to harvest the flower (bud). Hope that helps!

      apparently tho off of one plant a bunch of off-shoots grow next to the main plant called 'suckers'. You apparently can separate them from the main plant, and plant those. and they grow into full plants that grow bananas. .. ad. infinitum... pretty cool.

    • @Mcfirefly2

      @@MrMebigfatguy Usually more than one sucker or pup, so if you plant them, you'll get more and more!

      Rebecca Cornel Nice to know you have banana plants as well. The flower is actually very delicious but its a laborious task to separate out the bitter part - my mom used to do it perfectly though. When cooked with coconut, makes a great side vegetable dish.
