I have learned more from you in one year than every other source I have gone to in the last 10 years. I can see a huge difference with my plants and you are the one to thank for that!!
I have recently taken my passion for plants and succulents to a serious this is what i want to do with my life level and being a new comer to a larger spectrum of horticulture i am loving your videos i watch all of your videos and just love the depth you go into when talking about care, treatment, and all things plant related my knowledge has grown so much just from watching your videos. I find myself watching a video of yours and then wanting to go out into my yard and DIY a project or make room for some new plants. I just wanted to take the time to tell you how much i appreciate the time you put into your videos and that someone is benefiting from all of your knowledge :) please never loose your passion and drive!
I use straight vermiculite to start cuttings. When I first started doing it I was told by another grower that it would be too wet and that it wouldn't work, but I have had great success in the last 7 years doing this. I have used both the fine and the medium or large and both work equally well, but I started buying more of the fine, because it has more uses across the board, like for seed starting. Thanks for the video, I had always been confused as well.
@Liz B I haven’t tried those plants but do everything in vermiculite. Unfortunately, vermiculite is no longer produced in the US and comes from South Africa I believe, so it will be harder to come by. For this reason I have had to switch to pearlite and light soil like seed starting mix.
Thank you so much for explaining the difference between the two. For awhile I didn't even think there was a difference. So thx for clearing that up. Because of you I've learned a lot, thank you again. 🙂
I planted my first few pots by watching your videos, I even planted a hanging basket with my son and he enjoys it.. thank you because I'm learning a lot about different types of plants and flowers and now my front porch is looking radiant!!!
Love your channel! First time homeowner and I'm indebted to you on how much I've learned in the last 6 months. Now I know what to use for my ferns and succulents. Thank you so much!
Thank you Thank you for teaching about the differences in products and what they are for. I for one don't know what the heck most of the products are for when I walk by them. I truly appreciate anything that helps me obtain the longest possible life of my own gardening. Maybe you could have the person that told you about storing bulbs be a guest? I love your willingness to learn even though your super knowledgeable. That's an amazing trait.
One note on dampening off...besides bottom watering u can also spray soil surface wi5 a light mix of water and chamomile tea...it has antifungal properties...
Thank you so very much for this video. This video helped me understand the difference between the two. All these years I never fulling understood the difference. Read the packages & both sounded like they did the same thing. But when you explained it on this video, it's a bit different. Thanks again, much appreciate it!🌺
Could you please do a tutorial on peace lilies and ferns? I would like to know the correct way to repot them and the proper soil mixture to put them in in the pots. Thanks
Thank you SO much. I have struggled with knowing what the difference between these two were as well. Im terrible about over watering my house plants & often add peralite. But I wasn't sure it i should be trying the other. Now i know for sure not to with most of my house plants. I just recently learned what dampening off was & I had had it happen many times. Now I know. I'm going to get myself some vermiculite! I'd like to hear about how pumice fits in as the other person mentioned.
Another informative video, thanks so much. Would you consider doing a video on the use of Espoma products such as blood meal, bone meal, lime, and the various "tones" that are added to different plants? Thanks for thinking about it.
Oh my gosh, it really seems like I'm plugged in to needing to know so many tips and Answers to garden questions And they seem to appear like magic in all your videos! Just when I need them! I'm a great big fan of Garden Answers and your presenting of Proven Winners brand. I Depend on the beauty and quality of PW, I know that they will perform exceptionally every time! So many people rely on Garden Answers and Laura, Aaron and sweet Benjamin are simply top notch folks! And Mom too 😊. Thank You All Very Much!! 💝🌷🌿
This was an awesome video! I did not know the difference between the two and had wondered. Many of the directions for propagation by cutting say to use vermiculite and I had always thought that vermiculite and perlite were the same thing. Now I know why so few of my cuttings make it, the perlite just doesn’t hold water enough for them to thrive.
So grateful for this explanation! Sometimes it’s hard to suss out the differences between soil additives. Personally I would appreciate follow ups with other things commonly used to amend soils and how/why you’d use. So perhaps touching on pumice, clays, bonsai mix, diatomaceous absorbent chips (floor-dry), chicken grit, gel crystals, coconut coir, peat, and so on. Perhaps even sharing some of your fave soil mixes or recipes. Thanks so much!
OMG! thank you so much for this video, I am going to start some seeds and not having to worry about them as much and their roots being able to form makes me so relieved. I use Perlite in my potting mix and love how it works, and have heard about Vermiculite, but wasn't aware how to use it correctly. Thank you again, see you in the next video, bye for now.
Oh wow, I’ve always noticed vermiculite sprinkled on top of the starter plants I buy every year at the farmer’s market but never knew what it was and never thought to ask. I just always assumed it was ‘random stuff that fell in’ lol. I’m actually starting my own plants from seed this year (except the peppers, because I can never get them to sprout), to save money. I’ll have to get and use some of that. Thanks!
You are a wonderful lecturer, thank you I will remember to subscribe. I have learned a lot from you and I have worked at Nurseries, as a gardener, landscape architect and also at Botanical gardens. Everyday you learn new things in terms of gardening.
I have been discouraged with damping off of my seedlings. I will give it another go with the use of vermiculite dressing the soil on my seedling trays. Thanks.
Really like your style and your presentation. Honest & what’s GREAT, you got to the point immediately. So many... too, too many, UA-cam gardeners spend the 1st 4-5 minutes w silly intros & stories unrelated to the topic. This was excellent. Now we know the difference between Vermiculite & Pearlite. 🙏 Thanks a bunch.
Understood that perfectly...I'm definitely repotting my Lilly's and ferns with vermiculite and on top of my seed starts! Thanks for the awesome tips👍🏼🤗
Add water crystals to your mix. My peace lily love coffee grounds to your pot. I add to the top and mix in a little. For a few days you can smell the coffee grounds. But they grow very well.
Great info to know. Thanks for the examples of what to use for each need. That helps as much as knowing the differences. You are the best at explaining all things garden related. 👩🌾🌷🦜💕
I live in Brooksville Fl and think I should use Vericulite for my potted plants to keep the moisture for my plants. The summer heat dries them out quickly. What do you think?
Thanks so much for explqining thr differences between vermiculite and perlite. I have been using perlite 50/50 with potting soil for my succulents with great success. However, I hate that the perlite floats to the top😕. I have recently switched ovednto potting soil, pumice, turface, chicken grit, and horticultural charcoal. I get great drainage however believe I will need to water more frequently. I will have to see how this works out for me but at leas the floating perlite is not a factor. Thanks for sharing😊👍❤.
Great explanation. Thank you for that! I missed just one comment on its origins. Vermiculite is formed quite close to asbestos, so when it is mined it can be contaminated with asbestos. That´s why perlite should be everybodys first choice.
Boy, your videos are spot on with timing. I am on my way to purchase some soil amendments and was wondering if I should get perlite or vermiculite for my large pots. Thanks so much for the info!
Thank you this was very useful!!!! I want to repot my peace lily and some of my ferns, so I might add some vermiculite. Any soil mix suggestions are welcome!! Have a great day!!
Thank you Laura, I knew about moisture retention but no details. I wish I had seen this before I seeded. I have to see if I have vermiculite. Thanks again, great info! 🌱💜🌱
Thank you so much !! Love your info videos.... Love ALL your videos. I’ll be watching for more veggie garden info. My husband is not feeling so well so I am taking over for him. We are doing some raised beds this year so we can control the weeds and grass better. Happy Sunday from Ocean Shores WA.
Thank you so much for this. Also, could you just touch on Pumice vs these two options? I currently use Pumice for extra drainage in my potting mix and would like to know how this compares to Perlite and Vermiculite.
Thank you for sharing this interesting information. The succulent arrangement looks great. From the garden city of India to you, have a fantastic-week! Cheers.
TLDR can vermiculite be used to cover grass seed immediately after planting. We use peat moss tondo the same water holding function but when you as said vermiculite is inert and reduces plant disease.... That would solve a major issue, and possibly make planting a new lawn in mid summer a realistic option instead of spring and fall.
Thank you so much for clearing up the difference for us. I love learning from Garden Answer.
I have learned more from you in one year than every other source I have gone to in the last 10 years. I can see a huge difference with my plants and you are the one to thank for that!!
Same here, plus she's in Oregon like me. Can't wait to go to their garden center some day.
Very articulate, never mind “vermiculate”. And now I know never to confuse “casting perlites before swine”. Seriously, job well done!
Succulent lover here too!

My grandpa was a horticulturist. Thank you. You sound like him. Apreciate your help starting my own first garden.
I planted my first few pots by watching your videos, I even planted a hanging basket with my son and he enjoys it.. thank you because I'm learning a lot about different types of plants and flowers and now my front porch is looking radiant!!!
I'm glad to know the difference. I always use both. 🌵👍🏻
I'm glad you talked about this.
I never knew the difference.
I like that, if you know you tend to teach others.
I'm impressed.
Same

I love both for growing orchids... and how you distinguished the characteristics of each was, awesome. Thank you 👍🏼

YOU ARE THE BEST PLANT UA-camR OF THE ENTIRE WORLD! THANK YOU SO MUCH! LIVE YOU! I WISH YOU THE BEST! HUGS FROM BRAZIL!
Thank you Laura! I was always confused about the difference!
I start my seeds the same way now! Works like a charm! Thanks for the great info, Laura!
Thanks for the info, I'm checking on my seedlings a couple times a day. This is definitely a game changer. 👍
Your video came just in time. I am repotting some Cala Lillies and doing some seeds. Thanks!!
Thank you so very much for this video. This video helped me understand the difference between the two. All these years I never fulling understood the difference. Read the packages & both sounded like they did the same thing. But when you explained it on this video, it's a bit different. Thanks again, much appreciate it!🌺
Thank you! I always wondered that as well. My seed starting has been disappointing, so I will definitely try the vermiculite.
Sunny and a little warmer today so time to get out and cleanup gardens. Excited thanks to Laura!
Could you please do a tutorial on peace lilies and ferns? I would like to know the correct way to repot them and the proper soil mixture to put them in in the pots. Thanks
Peace lilies weren't included, but there was a pretty thorough fern tutorial posted recently. ua-cam.com/video/qxDgk1CusB8/v-deo.html

Thank you. The difference is very clear now
It always a pleasure to watch a video where the speaker has the right information and explains it well. Thank you!
Clear and to the point. Thanks, you have solved several different problems for me.

Watering from the bottom is an excellent way to avoid damping off, but thanks for the differentiation between vermiculite and perlite.
Thank you for the video and the information!! Always good to process info while I have coffee with Laura!!!

Good to know!! Never knew the difference either.. Thank you!
I work in a factory that produces and ships out these materials, she knows what she is talking about.
now i know, it will help explain this to our customer in the store. thanks
Thanks for the info ! Left me more confident!😀😀
Thank you so much for this information, It is so much clearer. You did a fantastic job of explaining.

Hi Laura, thank you for explaining the difference between the two. I also thought they did the same thing. So confusing!
I really enjoy your videos, you give such good information. Thank you!
Beautiful vid...editing, fluency, content not to mention how charismatic you are!
Good information. Along with Bio-tone I need to order vermiculite. Stores don't carry the full line of Espoma products.
Thank you! You have answered a question I've had for years.
Have a good day.
Great explanation. Thank you for that! I missed just one comment on its origins. Vermiculite is formed quite close to asbestos, so when it is mined it can be contaminated with asbestos. That´s why perlite should be everybodys first choice.
do you think about planting drought tolerate things in your yard since you hardly ever get rain? It would be an interesting thing to see.
Thanks for sharing that great information, now I know when to use them. Xx
Boy, your videos are spot on with timing. I am on my way to purchase some soil amendments and was wondering if I should get perlite or vermiculite for my large pots. Thanks so much for the info!
one of the best things I love using perlite for is using them in flats when I go to clone my plants.
I like these types of videos! Thanks!
Another super I formative video. Thanks Laura!
Great explanation, thank you for sharing!
I had no idea!
Thanks!! I was looking for perlite but the ladies at the plant store said vermiculite was the same thing! I’ll have to go back. But thanks!!
I never knew! Thanks!
I store dahlias in perlite to eliminate risk of mold.
You always have perfect timing. I just bought both of these to use but didn't know much about them so you just answered my questions LOL Thanks.
Hello I am Sarika Vasava. Thank you dear for sharing very good information and different about perlight and vermiqelight.
Thanks so much Laura for explaining the difference.👌🏻
SO informative. Thanks for a great tutorial..
Thank you this was very useful!!!!
I want to repot my peace lily and some of my ferns, so I might add some vermiculite.
Any soil mix suggestions are welcome!!
Have a great day!!
Very well explained, thank you!
I always wondered what the difference was too.
Thank you Laura, I knew about moisture retention but no details. I wish I had seen this before I seeded. I have to see if I have vermiculite. Thanks again, great info! 🌱💜🌱
This video is so great! Please make more educational videos like this! Thank you.
Can vermiculite help with root rot?
Thanks for clearing that up!
Ah, marvellous information! Thank you!
Awesome tips, thanks for sharing. I am a forager and want to get busy with micro farming this year; this certainly helps. :)
Finally! I get the answer. Thank you so much.
Oh I'm so glad you covered this subject. I didn't know the difference or when to use the other one. So great. See you in the next one!
Best explanation I've ever had, thank you
Thank you so much for this. Also, could you just touch on Pumice vs these two options? I currently use Pumice for extra drainage in my potting mix and would like to know how this compares to Perlite and Vermiculite.
Both pumice and perlite create spaces in potting mediums for water and air. Neither retains water, unlike vermiculite, another soil amendment.
As a side note, pumice makes an excellent top dressing. It can help to discourage gnats.
@@misskirigirl Perlite absorbs and retains water, just not to same the degree that vermiculite does.
I had no idea. Thanks! I have knowledge and hope for this season now 🙂
Thank you I have always wondered this same thing!
Literally, you’re a garden wizard. 🧙🏻♀️🌱
Very informative video ... thanks Laura 👍🏼💜🕊
Many thanks for sharing your knowledge.🙏
Ur video editing is so nice, I love the item pan overs and zoom shots...it’s so much nicer than just watching someone talk, same shot for 10 minutes
Thankyou so much for clearing up my confusion x
Great! I have perlite but I'll buy some vermiculite for seeds next spring. 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
thankyou soo much laura.that was really informative.
Very, very informative. Wow, thanks for making planting easier.
Thank you for sharing this interesting information. The succulent arrangement looks great. From the garden city of India to you, have a fantastic-week! Cheers.

You’re the best Laura ☀️🍂🍁🌺🌻🌼🌸🌲🌳🌿🌱🌵
When planting seeds, do you put the vermiculite before or after putting the seeds in the cells?
She doesn’t even know the difference between perlite and vermiculite.
