- Episode 6 of 50! These are the best sounding records in my collection. Today I'm looking at three different pressings of the 1984 Pretenders "Comeback" album which saw Chrissie retooling her band and putting out an album for the ages.

There seems to be a lot of Caress of Steel fans in this group. 👌🏻👍🏻
Learning to Crawl came out when I was in college. A great record that sounds great as well. I crank it to this day!
I own two OGs, one I've had since the late eighties, the other I found quite recently. I think they both sound wonderful. Yes, Martin is touring with Chrissie again. I've got tickets to see them here in Tulsa just two days after my birthday.
I realized I had the Mofi addition in my collection and had never listened to it, I played it today, so good!
Excellent video on an excellent album. My Canadian presing sounds pretty darn good. I can only imagine how good the mofi and quiex II sound. And yes as per the previous comments, I' ve been fortunate to hear them live. Was their Get Close tour 1987. Opening was Iggy Pop. Great concert.
Thanks for another informative one Tim.
Cheers.
Brad.
Thumbs up for Caress of Steel.
Very very fine review on this LP which I grew up with. Also love your approach to Quiex and all. Thx dude. Much appreciated.
Saw them at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in 2018...fantastic show. Worth the 15 hour drive from the Great White North.
When I saw Robert Plant at the Royal Albert Hall - Chrissie came on and performed 2000 Miles. All rather lovely
You’re killing me Tim! I thought I was OK with my MOFI, but now I’m gonna have to get a Quiex!
Nice Tim, keep them coming. BTW; it’s Ray Davies.
Hey Tim, Learning To Crawl is one of those near and dear records for me. I wonder what Rhino HiFi could do with those first three Pretenders records? When Crawl came out I was initially disappointed it didn’t have the raw energy of the first two albums. Over the years it has become a favorite, not a bad song on the entire album. And as you said, some of Chrissie’s best vocals and songwriting. Thanks for showcasing Learning to Crawl, it’s a true classic. Cheers!
Great album indeed! My only copy is a US press that I found at a thrift shop sometime ago for $2.00. It's in excellent condition and sounds really good. The MoFi is not available at this time.
Thanks for the history lesson on this album.
I have always loved my original UK pressing cut by Tim Young
Thanks Tim. You motivated me to spin my copy of this fantastic album. Saw the original lineup live in Hong Kong in 1981. Amazing show!!!
Whoa…..jealous ✌🏻
robbie mcintosh. was in the band at the time. they toured austrlia. to support the album. was a great gig show
Take care of those family jewels. Awesome Video!!!
Thanks Tim u always have great vinyl updates so Dave Davies was the uncle?
Yup.
First three pretenders albums are a must own. Chrissie is my favorite female vocalist and the first album is an all time great and vote for the best due to just excellent from front to back. Middle of the road is the killer track from the learn to crawl album but few duds on there so why it ranks behind for me.
Ty for sharing, this was a great review of a seminal post punk masterpiece! I have a Winchester pressing and it too suffers from the sibilance issues you described about your Allied. I picked up a Nautilus of their self titled and it is a really strong pressing...which made me want to upgrade my Learning to Crawl and now I feel like I have a direction here with your review.
Thanks 👍🏻
If the album was not in the title of the video, I would have thought it would be about Rush - Caress of Steel being displayed behind you ;-)
Maybe it will be the next one ?
Great one Tim! I have a Japanese pressing and it sounds wonderful. I like your background on this video - are you going to talk about Caress of Steel on the channel? It's an overlooked classic in my opinion. Cheers from Central California!!
I keep watching tour videos to see if you ever get a turntable isolating platform,or one of those high end sonic mats. I don't know why...love your room. Love The Pretenders. I also love the Morrissey cover of Chain Gang. Go vegans ! I also spent 200$ on the 33 version of Nightfly. I regretted spending so much almost immediately...but upon hearing it....wow. As with Aja UHQR - gamechanging.
I’ve had thoughts about one of those for the Thorens - my next gear purchase is probably going to be a tube phono pre-amp though. 👍🏻
Found an immaculate SRC pressing pretty impressive
Got home cleaned in the ultrasonic cleaner. I don’t know how any pressing could sound better than this SRC pressing. It is just kick ass loud. The balance between the band and Chrisies vocals is perfect.
Good to hear!
Honeymoon-Scott?
Oops
Great album, Learning To Crawl. Chrissy Hynde was married to Ray Davies and also Jim Kerr from Simple Minds. I see your not using your HK 730 and got your McKintosh back. Your system must sound great with those Klipsh speakers. My City Was Gone is a great tune. I have OG Canadian Sire Learning To Crawl, sounds fine
Thanks for watching. I am quite pleased with the current set-up. The HK 730 is a gem and can’t seem to part with it so I occasionally swap it back in.
by my pretty countryside
Its Krieg Wunderlich not "Kurt" i agree eith you on the sound of the MoFi and OG copies.
Thanks 👍🏻
I met Dave Davies, and he told me it’s pronounced “Davis.”
Good to know, thanks
I have no idea where the Caress of Steel comments are coming!
Krieg Wunderlich.
The pronunciation of Davis and Davies are flip flopped in the UK. I used to think it was a northern thing but who knows.
I love my Pretenders LTC MOFI and my Promo Quiex copy equally.
I like the music on this record but I find it bright sounding. Would not put it on my list of great sounding albums. I have a US allied pressing in excellent condition. Only minor surface noise
Thanks for weighing in.
Ray and Dave say "davis", so...
