    Excellent video, I really enjoyed watching it. Just my 10 cents worth, I'd always buy bare root but also I would go to the nursery and get it dug out, that way it doesn't need to be pruned to be sent by post. When we arrived here 20 years ago we actually had a cider apple orchard but we grafted on some eating apples too and we now have a good mixed orchard. We learned pruning and we got free grafting wood by volunteering at an apple conservatory to do their orchard pruning for a day - it was an excellent way to learn and fun too! All the very best, Sue

      @Karo Chowning You are welcome and I hope you'll find somewhere that offers this, our pruning day was at Berrington Hall in Herefordshire UK. It was a lovely setting and we got lunch too! All the best from Normandie, Sue

    How did you build the blueprint for your food forest? I am adept with the permaculture lifestyle but I need to learn more about it, what would you do with this flower bed? I will send pictures for reference please and thank you, any tips or tricks would be phenomenal. I have about 9ft flower bed that I have built over 2 years in my apartment complex, I want to practice permaculture here. the bed is maybe 9ft x 3ft. I had 10 ft tomatoes trellised with bamboo and twine, 3 jalapenos plants, and over 5 variety of flowers and basil. I am intimidated by fall planting and leafy greens

    Great channel. I'm planning out my suburban backyard, same hardiness zone. I plan to add lots of fruit trees, but I'm actually more interested in ornamental approach, like a potager and have espaliered trees mixed in with broad leaf flowering evergreens. I know you use bark on the bottom of the trees. Just curious how you would go about underplanting with something like rhododendrons below the trees. Thanks for any tips.

    • @jamesprigioni
      @jamesprigioni  7 років тому

      +Pa Fe thanks 😁
      Oh very cool. Like edible landscaping mixed in with ornamental. Yeah I use wood chips as an organic matter mulch, same as a forest.
      I would underplant the rhododendron the same time I put the fruit tree in it possible. I would get a young rhodo do it doesn’t shade the tree or cut back the rhodo if necessary. Once the tree canopies over the rhodo you can let the rhodo grow larger.

    Hi James, I just found your channel and subscribed. We just bought a home in the suburbs. The backyard is small but I want to build a permaculture on it. The ground is hard and rocky. There is however, a huge old apple tree. This year it bore fruit, hundreds of apples, I have never seen an apple tree this large. All of the apples had black holes all over them and were rotted on the tree. I guess my question if you have the time to answer is, how do you know if you should cut a tree down? Or could it be saved? I would rather save it. I don't know what variety it is. The neighbors say it has been here for a long time.

    About grass under fruit tree. I think that this is not always a bad thing. If I plant a fruit tree on standard vigorous rootstock, or on its own roots it will grow large. If grass can reduce a tree height it can be useful.
