If i remember there was a destroyer (I think) in cars 2 that tries to kill one of the main characters (don't remember the name), that ship was its own character being capable of controle his own weaponry. I think that logic also applies to this scene.
I only know that the ships are alive, the aircraft carrier that Dusty landed on to refuel and fix his antenna had eyes that moved on the bridge (I don't know if that's the name of that part of the boat, like the cabin idk)

@@Saltasaur Japan's AA weapons during WW2 weren't that great, especially the 25mm which were plain awful. Hence my surprise that they actually destroyed anything, much less a whole squadron of Corsairs.
There seems to be 5 which is how many the Japanese planned to make in ww2 so maybe ww2 in the cars universe lasted longer and the Japanese ended up constructing all 5 Yamatos

I agree though that Skipper gave all of them a death sentence the moment he okayed a break through the clouds when they obviously had no anti ship weapons even if it was 1 battleship

Of course, by the time the USN was using Corsairs they'd mostly do these sorts of attacks in concert with the bombers for a large combined strike. Whether we just don't see the bombers or the creators didn't bother researching WW2 anti-shipping tactics is something you can decide for yourself. Also, this flashback is giving WW2 Japanese AA a bit too much credit (and too little credit to the sheer ruggedness of American aircraft). The US only lost a tiny handful of planes and men while sinking the Yamato and her escorts. Most of their casualties came from the kamikaze attack launched in conjunction with the operation. Then again this is in a different world with sentient vehicles so maybe things worked differently here.
Not just that, there are a total of 5 yamato-class battleships there, 2 of that class were ever built (yamato herself and musashi) and the 3rd became a carrier (shinano)
Considering that we do not know how cars characters get conceived by their parents it could make sense to have more Yamato ships than 1, considering that you need at least 2 parents

I think it would be hours before the battle of Okinawa, If I remember correctly, before the direct attack on the fleet was made, there were reconnaissance planes that detected the fleet. I suppose that the squadron is the one presented, but due to the needs of the scrip they made them attack the fleet instead of returning to base and reporting. (It's just a hypothesis, it could be anything else but it's the one I make the most sense of because of the silhouettes of the battleship)

Most Japanese AA guns were very crew intensive and vulnerable to strafing runs, there's actually multiple accounts of Corsairs, Lightnings, and Hellcats doing that in patrol runs on lone destroyers, cruisers, or transports.

I like how in cars they have slightly small peices of dark scenes to keep in touch with reality of the dangers of racing, while planes had a bunch of light children safe parts but then go hard with skippers backstory
it was a mistake, they only saw one ship and the rookie pilots thought it would be an easy strafing run. they didn't realize the rest of the fleet was there until it was too late.
They're supposed to only do recon. They went for a strafing run because they thought it's only one ship, but the entire fleet was hidden by the clouds.
I still remember watching the film so many times as a kid (along with the first 2 Cars films), and all these years later I realize they had no right to go so hard with a car WWII scene
Would love an air show film made around this character. Bunch of old war planes showing off and sharing stories. Could make them off of real pilots. Like Bf109 being Hans Marseille and the villain would be based off Rudel as a Stuka. Basically a bunch of planes upset that they lost having some kind of plotted revenge. Being Marseille was an outstanding fellow he'd be the only German plan to work with the OG cast. Being Rudel lost a leg in the war and was say very loyal to the cause, I think it would make for some good drama having crippled Stuka being the mastermind.
the real question is who's operating the boats? It's not planes, they dont have any thumbs to build them or room enough to hold them, and the ships dont have faces either... This was a war of the planes against the humans.

it was a mistake, they only saw one ship and the rookie pilots thought it would be an easy strafing run. they didn't realize the rest of the fleet was there until it was too late.

They're supposed to only do recon. They went for a strafing run because they thought it's only one ship, but the entire fleet was hidden by the clouds.

Would love an air show film made around this character. Bunch of old war planes showing off and sharing stories. Could make them off of real pilots. Like Bf109 being Hans Marseille and the villain would be based off Rudel as a Stuka. Basically a bunch of planes upset that they lost having some kind of plotted revenge. Being Marseille was an outstanding fellow he'd be the only German plan to work with the OG cast.
Being Rudel lost a leg in the war and was say very loyal to the cause, I think it would make for some good drama having crippled Stuka being the mastermind.
