With your help, i was brave enough to pluck and wire up a small wild pine I took from the woods last year. I fed it some holly tone and she looks so happy. You can tell when a tree is happy. She grows new sprouts all over.
I have only just discovered your channel a short while ago and have been watching three or four of your videos a day to try and take it all in. You have rekindled my excitement for bonsai that I had as a youth after first seeing them on the “Karate Kid” movie. I feel as if you have become a dear friend over the past week, and I cannot wait to begin my journey into bonsai. I also enjoy your colorful shirts, I too have several that I like to wear. I hope to some day be able to make the trip to your nursery and meet you in person. Thank you, Jason
I just discovered this channel today, have watched 4 videos so far, and this was my thoughts exactly. Bonsai hasn't even crossed my mind for almost 30 years and now I want to go make one.
I find his voice so soothing. I’ve always wanted a bonsai plant. I’m going to do a little more research and start a new hobby. I promise I will do my best to care for her. More than likely she will have to come home preshaped. I appreciate this video upload. Thank you.
I love how accessible he makes bonsai. Got me so motivated I bought a Japanese juniper from Lowe’s. Was priced at 19.95 but register read it as 15.95. Think it’s a nice tree to start.
Thanks for not overcomplicating pines. I understand they're more difficult than some other trees but some people make it seem like it's surgery to trim them!
Im only 29 from australia but i too use both metric and imperial in my day to day calculations. Ive got a small olive tree that a friend gave me that im going to attempt to bonsai.. Ive had it about a week and each day i pluck a couple leaves to start exposing the trunk and its already starting to become something more each day that passes. Love your work :)
When you talk about the traditional shaping of bonsai and how sometimes people want to be “unique,” that’s what I will say when people look at my very amateur attempts with my bonsai plants 😊 Because I am 72, I know that I don’t have 20 or more years to wait for trunks to grow. Geraniums make quick bonsai.
i kneeeeed bigger wire for these red pines i picked in my michigan field.. they are impossible.. but beautiful.... you always give me confidence. and my trees dont die unless my winter is warm oddly enough. thanks a million
Thank you for making such wonderful videos and encouraging me to think that bonsai doesn't have to be complicated to be enjoyed. I just started in bonsai and have pulled two pines and three maple trees from my woods. I am thinking to let them settle in over the winter and develop roots and see what happens in the spring. I am so excited.
I have been starting my journey into bonsai and unfortunately i have been failing at keeping my starts alive but your videos have kept my positive. One day i hope to be like you! Thank you for the awesome videos!!
Happy Holidays!!! I like long videos... so many things just “pop up” that are so informative!!! And I’ve not heard you say yet...”this is an impossible specimen, it’s a waste of soil”!!! Time has been an excellent teacher!!
Great video. I am in the USA and the wife and I redun our front yard garden into a Koi pond so I removed three wintergreen boxwood shrubs and turned them into bonzai. If you have any boxwoos bushes in the UK I would love to see what you would do with them. Thanks for sharing all the helpful information you pass here on the UA-cam channel.
This is so enjoyable to watch. It's amazing to see the transformation into Bonsai. I'll be exploring the nearby forest this Spring and start digging up small trees!!!
thank you for your nice videos and instructions, its very helpfull. I think everyone is amazed by the raw materials (tree) you have and how turn em into even nicer Bonzai! I am curious how often you change, renew or remove the wireings.
Mr Chan, I've noticed in most of your videos that you rarely use pebbles/rocks as soil, and instead opt for the soil the plan is already growing in. I've seen other people remove all the soil they can until it's only the tree and roots. What's the difference between the two, and which is preferred?
I have been having great success using a Terra Cotta saucer, the kind you put under a pot to catch water, the moss seems to like the humidity the damp ceramic creates.
@@alejandrohuerta988 i wasn't just talking about him. That was a general reference. And about him well he has dedicated his entire life in his hobby and he is Master of this art. That's why i said he is lucky to have his hobby as his profession. You'll see very less chance of that with other people.
I love your channel!!! I have been learning about bonsai on youtube for a while and I hope to make a bonsai tree soon. Also, if you could, a new mic might be a good investment since the one you use has some bad feedback every now and then.
Very informative. I am certainly going to try this. The only confusing part for me was that I thought you had to transplant into Bonsai soil. and nip the top of the tree?
Hello, I really like your videos and wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge and using/talking both metric and Imperial it is helpful (for me at least) to hear both and have a better understanding......now just start talking miles and kilometres and I'll have a full class..,lol
Master Chan. What is your end goal for the trees in which you wired limbs together in pairs? Will you eventually separate each pair and remove one limb in each or "branch" one out to a different direction? This is the first time I've seen pairs of limbs wired up like this and I'm truly interested in what you have in mind and exactly how you will "adjust" those limbs after they get the chance to grow and adjust to their new "life". Thank you and may you and yours have a Blessed New Years.
I’ve noticed watching many of your videos that with the initial potting you pot the tree very high. Is there a reason for this? I’m always concerned that when watering the water will just run off. Thanks
Dont worry - the water will still go through the soil. I mound the soil for aesthetic reasons. If the soil level is depressed - it doesn't look so nice.
Peter i have a 27 year old spruce in a giant pot. I'd like to repot it into a bonsai pot. Does that cause any issues for a spruce that old? Can i cut the tap roots?
"Wherever there are branches... JUST WIRE THEM! " Another Peter Chan classic quotation! Thanks for video. I really enjoy it.
You are such a natural teacher. You’re speaking what is in your mind as you work and it is so enlightening and enjoyable to follow you.

Thanks for another great video! I've always been a bit reserved about working with pines... perhaps I should give it a bit more consideration.

You know that's illegal, right lol
Double videos,.awesome..thx for sharing peter
Beautiful work - I was hoping you'd make a cascade with the one with the crazy branch situation :)
Just loved this video. I have learned so much. Thank you.
I hope you plant those two that grew together as a unique two tree bonsai!

Huge gratitude of thanks for your videos and teachings. Really appreciate you are doing this and the art you share
amazing video! as always!
Thank you for wearing Christmas shirt! It makes the holiday 😇
Another invaluable video, thank you as always Mr Chan. Looking forward to Bonsai Fest in 2020.

Drainage is the difference! The akadama mix drains much better than normal field soil
I was told to leave the soil around the center top because the beneficial fungus helps the tree with shock and recovery.
With evergreens.

"for ladies it's like plucking eybrow" - Peter Chan 🤣👍🏽
Glad I took the time to watch U at work, Sir!

Inspirational video particularly liked the cascade tree
I always love watching this channel...so relaxing !!!
Enjoyed watching how you gave an extra shape
Outstanding work of Bonsai Art👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing Sensei🌳🙏🙏🙏🪴

People who make their hobby as their profession and be successful are lucky.

Hi i love the videos and the technique of bonsai and dedication to the craft.I was wondering what did people use long ago other than wire?

Mr Chan, I am from Costa Rica, I love your teachings about bonsais, can i bonsai a coffee plant? Gracias Pura Vida!
That would be awesome if you did! Idk how easy it would be, but he makes me believe you can bonsai just about anything! 🤗💜
Very informative. I am certainly going to try this. The only confusing part for me was that I thought you had to transplant into Bonsai soil. and nip the top of the tree?
I always use a fork for the roots
Don't worry you're not alone!😁

I think wire is basically essential with conifers. I think deciduous should basically only be clip and grow and maybe minimal, minimal wire.
Thank you for the video Mr Chan. Roughly how long would the wire stay on for?
At least a year - may be two
"Why do we have to wire everything?", next tree: "The first thing we do is wire every single branch."
Think about it for a while.
Hi Mr. Chan, thanks for your videos, I wanted to ask when is the time to start working on a young mugo pine?
I live in northern Italy.
Thank you!
You can wire them at any time of the year but repot only in Spring or Autumn. Not in the middle of summer
you made me laugh haha, For ladies this is like plucking eyebrows. I love the videos!

Yes you are right. We normally just leave 3 branches to grow from one point - too many and a bulge will form at that point.
I believe I will start referring to you as 'The Bob Ross of Bonsai'

Peter i have a 27 year old spruce in a giant pot. I'd like to repot it into a bonsai pot. Does that cause any issues for a spruce that old? Can i cut the tap roots?
If your wire is too thick it will wrap the branch around the wire instead of the wire around the branch.
